I took a half day private walking tour around the old Madina in Fes and it was absolutely fantastic! The sun was shining and Abdelhak was so kind and welcoming and very pleasant. This was a great tour! Our guide Hicham brought us to different spots within the old Medina of Fes including some mosques, the tannery, the first school, and markets. Hicham truly went above and beyond for us even spending extra time to help my husband find something he had seen on the tour that he wanted to buy but didn’t mention at the time. Hicham was so kind, patient, and helpful. We had the best day with him! We would highly recommend booking with Hicham.

After hearing how difficult it can be to navigate the Fez Medina, my wife and I decided to book a private guided tour. We were so glad we did. Abdou, our guide, is a local and seemed to know every street, corner, and shop inside the Medina. He shared fascinating insights about the area and Morocco in general, and even helped us negotiate in local stores by advising us on the real “local” prices instead of the inflated tourist rates. He also helped us arrange a private transfer to the Fez Airport for our departure day, which was fantastic.

I cannot recommend this tour enough! The sites we visited were so beautiful and is best experienced with a guide as they are able to teach you the history. Our guide, Abdou, was very friendly, informative and attentive. He picked us up from our riad and took us to all the sites, stopping along the way for photos. Abdou is so connected in the city, he got us samples of different fruits and pastries, giving us the local experience. He went above and beyond when we mentioned we wanted to buy coffee beans, and he accompanied us to the mall to get us this. Such great value for an incredible experience.

He was prompt, picked us up on time. We went directly to the Medina after a short tour, and he was very knowledgable was never impatient, answering all of our questions, allowing us to stop when necessary, or to forge ahead through the throngs of large groups through the narrow hallways.

This was an excellent tour for a first-time visitor to the city and good value for money. I was met promptly at the agreed meeting place by my guide, Abdou. He had messaged the evening before to confirm the time and place. There were just three of us on the tour which made it a pleasant, more intimate experience. We were taken at a good pace with stops for talks outside shops, stalls and buildings with a longer breaks for drinks. We all skipped lunch but were asked whether we wished to stop. The tour lasted a little over 5 hours in total as there was plenty to see and ask about and no one was in any particular hurry. We were shown local carpenters at work and went to the ‘woodwork museum’. There were two ‘madrassas’ (old theological colleges) en route each with ornate masonry work, decorative marble and carved wooden ceilings. There was a large carpet business housed in a C14th riad style building; a silk workshop; the leather tannery (with an obligatory fistful of mint leaves); the ‘Blue Gate’; the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss; the world’s oldest university dating from C9th; panoramic views of the city and city walls from a roof-top terrace and a herbal remedy/essential oils shop. All this along with taking a look at the bakeries, and metalware, ceramics, sweets, meat (there was a camel’s head in a butchers fridge), fruit, incense and spices crammed in shops lining the narrow, tall streets of the medina. There was of course the opportunity to purchase items from the various merchants and it can be an uncomfortable and unfamiliar feeling to say ‘no thank you’ as politely as possible- unless of course you want to buy something. Abduo reassured us by saying we should not feel any pressure to buy anything we didn’t really want to. However one has to accept that people have different ways of making a living. This is part and parcel of the experience of travel. There was an entrance fee for the madrassas and the woodwork museum (about 20Dh each). Our guide paid for things along the way and, taking this into account as well as the original price being good value or even, dare I say, quite cheap it seemed appropriate to give our guide a monetary gift at the end of the tour. I must stress that this wasn’t asked for and was received with much appreciation.
