Most aurora tours in Fairbanks keep you in a van all night or park you at a lodge 20 minutes from town. This tour does neither. Your guide, Michael—a native Alaskan with 20+ years of experience finding the northern lights—picks you up from your Fairbanks hotel for a scenic drive deep into Alaska’s interior. The drive itself is part of the experience: dark spruce forests, open valleys, and a sky that gets bigger and darker with every mile as the city lights disappear behind you. Your destination is a private wilderness lodge—a warm cedar cabin with large panoramic windows, a fireplace, comfortable seating, hot drinks, snacks, and a clean restroom. It sits in a dark-sky location directly beneath the aurora oval, where the northern lights appear overhead rather than on the horizon. On clear nights, you watch the aurora from the comfort of the lodge, stepping outside when the display intensifies and warming up inside whenever you want. No standing in a frozen parking lot for hours. If clouds move in, you won’t just wait and hope. Michael monitors weather data in real time and will take the group mobile in the heated van to chase clear skies—something no other lodge-based tour in Fairbanks offers. His lifetime of living in Alaska means he knows the microclimate patterns, back roads, and ridgelines that most guides don’t. Groups are capped at 10 guests so the night feels personal, not like a production line. Whether you just want to take in the lights with your own eyes, learn about the science behind the aurora, or get help capturing the moment on your phone or camera, Michael is there to make it work for you. This tour typically runs 8–10 hours. If the aurora is spectacular, we stay longer. Your experience comes first. ITINERARY: Stop 1: Hotel Pickup in Fairbanks Your guide picks you up from your Fairbanks hotel or Airbnb between 8:00–8:30 PM. (Exact time confirmed day-of based on weather and aurora forecasts.) For accommodations outside downtown, meet at Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center. Stop 2: Scenic Drive into the Alaskan Interior Settle into the heated van as you leave the city lights behind. The drive takes you through dark spruce forests and open valleys deep into Alaska’s interior—one of the darkest, most aurora-active corridors in North America. Stop 3: Private Aurora Viewing Lodge Arrive at the lodge and settle in by the fire. Michael briefs the group on current aurora and weather conditions. On clear nights, the viewing begins here—step outside when the lights appear, warm up inside whenever you want. If clouds develop, Michael takes the group mobile to chase clear skies. Duration: 5–7 hours at the lodge and/or chasing (flexible based on aurora activity) Stop 4: Return to Fairbanks Drop-off at your hotel by approximately 5:00 AM. On exceptional aurora nights, the tour may run later. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: • Maximum 10 travelers per tour • Dress in warm layers—temperatures can drop well below zero.
