Most aurora tours in Fairbanks keep you in a van all night or park you at a lodge 20 minutes from town. This tour does neither. Your guide, Michael—a native Alaskan with 20+ years of experience finding the northern lights—picks you up from your Fairbanks hotel for a scenic drive deep into Alaska’s interior. The drive itself is part of the experience: dark spruce forests, open valleys, and a sky that gets bigger and darker with every mile as the city lights disappear behind you. Your destination is a private wilderness lodge—a warm cedar cabin with large panoramic windows, a fireplace, comfortable seating, hot drinks, snacks, and a clean restroom. It sits in a dark-sky location directly beneath the aurora oval, where the northern lights appear overhead rather than on the horizon. On clear nights, you watch the aurora from the comfort of the lodge, stepping outside when the display intensifies and warming up inside whenever you want. No standing in a frozen parking lot for hours. If clouds move in, you won’t just wait and hope. Michael monitors weather data in real time and will take the group mobile in the heated van to chase clear skies—something no other lodge-based tour in Fairbanks offers. His lifetime of living in Alaska means he knows the microclimate patterns, back roads, and ridgelines that most guides don’t. Groups are capped at 10 guests so the night feels personal, not like a production line. Whether you just want to take in the lights with your own eyes, learn about the science behind the aurora, or get help capturing the moment on your phone or camera, Michael is there to make it work for you. This tour typically runs 8–10 hours. If the aurora is spectacular, we stay longer. Your experience comes first. ITINERARY: Stop 1: Hotel Pickup in Fairbanks Your guide picks you up from your Fairbanks hotel or Airbnb between 8:00–8:30 PM. (Exact time confirmed day-of based on weather and aurora forecasts.) For accommodations outside downtown, meet at Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center. Stop 2: Scenic Drive into the Alaskan Interior Settle into the heated van as you leave the city lights behind. The drive takes you through dark spruce forests and open valleys deep into Alaska’s interior—one of the darkest, most aurora-active corridors in North America. Stop 3: Private Aurora Viewing Lodge Arrive at the lodge and settle in by the fire. Michael briefs the group on current aurora and weather conditions. On clear nights, the viewing begins here—step outside when the lights appear, warm up inside whenever you want. If clouds develop, Michael takes the group mobile to chase clear skies. Duration: 5–7 hours at the lodge and/or chasing (flexible based on aurora activity) Stop 4: Return to Fairbanks Drop-off at your hotel by approximately 5:00 AM. On exceptional aurora nights, the tour may run later. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: • Maximum 10 travelers per tour • Dress in warm layers—temperatures can drop well below zero. Hat, insulated gloves, winter boots, and snow pants strongly recommended. Cold-weather gear can be rented locally • If you plan to photograph the aurora, bring a sturdy tripod. Camera rentals available first-come, first-served • We contact you on the day of your tour with exact pickup time. If forecasts suggest a better night during your trip, we’ll reach out proactively to discuss rescheduling • Aurora sightings depend on natural conditions and cannot be guaranteed. Booking 2–3 consecutive nights significantly increases your chances • We have friendly dogs at the lodge—let us know in advance if you have allergies • Minimum age: 10 years for group tours. Private tours available for families with younger children

We had a great experience seeing the northern lights! Michael is very knowledgeable about the aurora and Alaska in general. He drove us around to ensure we could find areas without cloud coverage to see the lights. You are at the mercy of the weather and conditions but he did what he could to optimize viewing and we were able to view them throughout the night. I would highly recommend booking a trip with him and Face the Outdoors!

Northern Lights indoor...

G_P, Mar 2026
Northern Lights indoor and outdoor viewing areas were very good. Snacks and beverages provided were good.

Worth every penny

Nawin_S, Feb 2025
Best northern light experience by far. Extremely knowledgeable whether it's real time or data and what to expect. First time seeing the northern lights and I would recommend this tour. It was worth spending for this experience.

Response from Host, Feb 2026

"Best northern light experience by far"—for a first-time aurora viewer? That's everything. Thank you! Real-time reading plus data is the winning combo. The apps tell me what's happening in space, but years of watching the Fairbanks sky tell me what that actually means on the ground. Combining both is how we stack the odds in your favor on every Fairbanks aurora tour. Your first time seeing the Fairbanks northern lights should be special. No confusion, no guessing—just someone beside you explaining what to look for and when to get ready. Glad I could be part of that moment for you. "Worth spending" is the highest compliment. This isn't just a tour, it's an investment in a bucket list memory. Knowing you walked away feeling like it delivered? That's the goal every single night. Thank you for choosing Face The Outdoors for your first Fairbanks, Alaska northern lights experience. Now that you've seen them once, the aurora has a way of calling you back. Hope to see you under the Fairbanks sky again! 🌌 — Michael

Beautiful cabin to watch the lights!

Nicole_A, Dec 2024
Michael was extremely knowledgeable about the aurora. He took us to a spot off the road before we arrived because the lights were out. After getting to his gorgeous cabin and seeing the lights were not coming out he allowed us to choose what to do next. We went back in a bit and found a fantastic viewing area.

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Flexibility is the name of the game on every Fairbanks aurora tour. When the lights show up early on the drive out? We stop. When they go quiet and you want to chase? We chase. Your night, your call. That's the beauty of a Fairbanks northern lights experience—no rigid schedule, just real-time decisions based on what the sky is doing. Giving you the choice of what to do next is part of making sure the night feels like yours. Glad we found that fantastic viewing area together! When one spot doesn't deliver, there's always another option. Knowing where to go when conditions shift is what makes the difference on a Fairbanks, Alaska aurora chase. Thank you for choosing Face The Outdoors and for rolling with the adventure. That flexibility on your end made finding those lights possible. Hope to see you back under the Fairbanks sky someday! 🌌 — Michael

Let down

Kenneth_F, Sep 2024
Did not see the lights which put a damper on the tour but that mother but thats mother nature not the tour

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Four stars even without the lights? That means a lot. Thank you for being so fair. The hardest part of running Fairbanks aurora tours is that I can do everything right and Mother Nature still gets the final say. Some nights she cooperates, some nights she doesn't. That's the honest truth of chasing the Fairbanks northern lights. What I can promise is the effort, the knowledge, and the best possible positioning. The rest is up to the sky. Thank you for understanding and for giving Face The Outdoors a shot. The aurora owes you one—and I'd love nothing more than a rematch. If you're ever back in Fairbanks, Alaska, reach out. Let's get you that show. 🌌 — Michael

Outback fun with cocoa, coffee and epic views.

Gateway to the Stars

Carol_P, Mar 2024
Just standing in the open surrounded by the night sky and cold was awesome! So glad the sky cleared for great photo opportunities! Michael was a fabulous host, guide, and photographer. I recommend this tour to everyone. Just make sure your phone has night vision.

Response from Host, Mar 2024

Appreciate the review! It was a beautiful night under the sky for sure!

A comfortable experience in look for the Northern Lights

Bernard_H, Feb 2024
Seeing the Northern Lights in the midst of winter is no comfortable task when the outside temperature is -15°C. This tour enabled us to hide in the warm lodge when necessary. Also, our guide, Mike, was very seasoned to look for the Lights.

Response from Host, Mar 2024

Thank you! Was our pleasure having you out!

Dreams come true

Ann_A, Feb 2024
Our guide, Michael, was extremely knowledgeable about the aurora borealis and made our dream of seeing it a reality.

Response from Host, Mar 2024

Glad to be apart of your experience and helping your dream become a reality. Thanks for the review!

Great experience.

Stan_D, Feb 2024
Really well taken care of. Far out of town to a dark sky area, and had a beautiful home to warm up in as we waited for the next display. Was all we had hoped for, and the sole reason we made this trip.

Response from Host, Mar 2024

Thanks guys! Happy we could make the trip worth it!

Chasing the Northern Lights

Monica_D, Sep 2023
This was a bucket list checkmark for sure. Michael is an awesome guide and very knowledgeable of the Aurora Borealis. Unfortunately we were unable to go to his lodge but he drove to areas we would be able to see the lights. He also showed us the areas in the sky which are darker and lighter grays which are the Aurora. If you’re deciding on a tour, this one is worth every penny! Thanks again Michael!

Response from Host, Sep 2023

Thanks for the review! Unfortunately some nights the viewing conditions are poor and have us out on the road. We’re the only viewing lodge offers this service in addition to better the odds of our guests as we don’t want them staring at clouds just as much as they don’t to stare at them. Thanks again!

Appreciate the review. The clouds can play a nasty game of chess some nights keeping you always on the move. Glad you guys enjoyed your time with us and the overall experience of the “chase” of aurora.

THE best way to see the northern lights!

Jessica_W, Sep 2023
Everything went so smoothly. Excellent communication throughout. The ride up to Michael’s home was comfortable and he even stopped briefly for us to take photos of the Alaska Range as the sun was setting! We were lucky with a clear night and the experience was especially amazing as we were able to stay warm and wait inside Michael’s beautiful home (large windows, comfy seating, blankets, beverages and snacks) until he called us on his radio/walkie talkie. Michael is a native Alaskan and extremely knowledgeable about the Aurora. This is THE best way to see the northern lights. Private small group setting and so cozy! 110% recommend!

Response from Host, Sep 2023

Thanks guys for the review. Pleased To hear you found your experience with us enjoyable and comfortable. Was a pleasure meeting you all and having you out!

Worth it!

Michael, the owner and host, was an exceptional guide, and gracious host. You will observe the northern skies from the comfort of his personal home with the perfect vantage point for observing the Aurora. He is extremely knowledgeable about the northern lights and an expert photographer who can assist everyone to get the most out of their camera for that memorable picture. You have the freedom to be outside for the best possible viewing, and to come inside as necessary to warm up, have some refreshments, and use facilities. If you want the best possible chance of seeing the northern lights in comfort with an expert guide, this was our experience and we can highly recommend this tour.

Response from Host, May 2023

Best possible Northern Lights tour

Leona_G, Mar 2023
My Dad wanted to see the Northern Lights, and so we came to Alaska just to try. This was the only excursion we booked for that purpose, and we were not disappointed. The guide is a great photographer, knows a lot about the science of the lights and how best to see them, and it was a great experience. He just makes this perfect. You have a cabin to rest/warm up in in between the Aurora movements, and he will radio in if it starts to look like something is happening. It was amazing.

Response from Host, Apr 2023

Appreciate the review. Thanks for taking the time to leave a review of your experience and thanks for coming out. Enjoyed having you guys!

A must to do

Alicia_M, Feb 2023
This was a bucket list item for us! Our guide was so knowledgeable about the aurora and the accommodations were fantastic. We were grateful for the transportation too. It was a long night, but he braved the cold and would signal us to come out when the lights did appear. Loved the small group setting as well.

Response from Host, Apr 2023

We couldn’t agree more with you on the small group size! No need to overcrowd the night! Appreciate the review! Take care!

Great private experience !

Varun_D, Sep 2022
Michael was a great host and his lodge at Delta junction is perfectly located for Aurora viewing ! He is committed and dedicated to provide the best viewing experience and does his best to find the best viewing spot possible ! We got some great clicks and would definitely recommend if you are looking for a great private experience.

Response from Host, Sep 2022

Appreciate the review! Was nice meeting you guys and taking in the lights. Granted it didn’t get good until the end of the night, but that’s how it goes at times, you just hope to be there when it happens! Safe travels home!

Great host and great setting for Aurora viewing

MaryJane_E, Apr 2022
Michael was a great host - lots of good tips on photographing the aurora. And his house in Delta Junction was the best - far away from city lights, and a great warm retreat (with a toasty fire, a bathroom, and great snacks).

Response from Host, Apr 2022

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed your time here. Enjoyed having you and sharing our house and Alaska with you.

The Best!

Carol_L, Mar 2022
Carol and I booked this tour because we had a free night to fill. We had no idea that it would be the greatest tour of our Fairbanks vacation. Mike picked us up punctually, and we were pleasantly surprised that the tour group would be small (a rarity)! The two hour drive to the lodge went by relatively fast. We were pleasantly surprised at arrival. This lodge is beautiful with huge windows. Fireplace, snacks, and hot/cold drinks were available. The best part is that the lights inside the lodge were turned off so that if you wanted to stay indoors, you could watch the Aurora displays and the stars without missing out. Most of us came packing our cameras and our warm clothes hoping to see the lights and photograph them outside Mike is a professional photographer so he was able to help us with our settings and offer ways to improve our results. He even took our picture with the lights lighting up the sky behind us. The outside area offers a wide open area with 360 views. The skies are so clear, and I have never seen so many stars in my entire long and traveled life. The Aurora gave us a fantastic show the night we were there. It was dancing across the sky! After many hours outside having fun taking pictures, we went inside to warm up and continued to watch the show inside the comfy lodge. We highly recommend this experience!

Response from Host, Mar 2022

Thank you guys so much for coming out and booking with us! Appreciate the kind review, as we strive at quality over quantity and I'm glad to see that our message is well received by our guests. We strive at giving our guests the most authentic Alaskan experience we can in the short time we have them at our lodge. Enjoyed having you and the lights indeed put on a nice display that night!

Come back
