Itinerary

Greet your guide at the central Brussels meeting point. Climb aboard a comfortable, air-conditioned coach and admire the scenic surroundings as your travel towards the town of Vladslo. Disembark and explore the German Military Cemetery of Vladslo, a poignantly peaceful area that features the famous sculpture by Käthe Kollwitz, 'Grieving Parents.'

Next, venture to the small city of Diksmuide and see a stretch of the Western Front that symbolizes Belgium’s courage and heroism during the conflict. See impressive monuments such as the monument of the "Brooding Soldier" dedicated to the sacrifice of 2,000 Canadian soldiers during the first German gas attack.

Head to the Flanders' Field Museum and hear fascinating tales of violent warfare and the dank conditions soldiers lived in then enrich your knowledge with the comprehensive exhibitions.

Stop at the somnolent town of Passchendaele and discover how a bloody battlefield underwent a radical transformation into this quaint place. Then head to the Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery to reflect upon the 35,000 graves that immortalize the memory of fallen soldiers.

Next, travel to Essex Farm Field Hospital and see the bunkers that inspired John McCrae to write his influential poem, 'In Flanders’ Field.'

Venture to Hill 60 to see some strategic tunnels then disembark at the picturesque town of Ypres to enjoy some independent exploration and dinner (own expense). Reconvene with your guide at a pre-arranged time to witness to soul-stirring Last Post Ceremony at Ypres’ Menin Gate. Absorb the saddening simplicity of the service then return to your vehicle for the drive back to Brussels.

Wow... An Incredible Experience!

Kimberly_T, Jul 2026
What an incredible experience to be part and an excursion that you will not forget. Stefan was an incredible guide and he truly loves what he does. It is a long day but one that I will never forget nor will you regret doing. I do wish that we had more time for lunch (only about 25 minutes) but I understand the need to show as much history as you can. I am forever grateful for those who fought in WWI and it was an amazing experience to witness the last post. A "must" activity for those who want to better understand the history of WWI. Thank you, Stefan.

Excellent and informative tour

Leslie_R, Jul 2026
Very well led by an experienced guide, in our case Stefan, who had an excellent personality and was extremely knowledgeable.

Poignant, eye opening and though provoking.

Michael_K, Jul 2026
Stefan our guide was very knowledgeable about each site we visited, and let us have our own time at each site to really take in the scale of what had gone one. By the end of the day and the last post ceremony had occurred the whole group felt very aware of the risks, the distances and the fear level of the front line

The guide made it great

cristina_c, Jul 2026
Our guide was without a doubt the most knowledgeable, intelligent, captivating person for our Glanders Field trip. I truly wish for everyone that loves history to have the chance to experience it with the guide we had today. Unfortunately I didn’t quite get his name but “Viator” I’m sure you know it. I truly say it this excursion was fantastic thanks to him. All the stories, the facts, and all the places he took us to were wonderful. Truly one of the best tours I had so far. Again thank you to our guide and our drivers. They were both amazing. I’m just sorry we didn’t have a chance to tell our guide ourselves. Please take this tour. Hopefully you’ll get the guide. You won’t regret it.

First rate tour

SaraJane_W, Jun 2026
Fabulous in-depth tour of various WW1 sites, battlefields, cemeteries and monuments. Guide Stefan was very engaging, telling the interesting stories and connections of people and hundreds of years of history in gorgeous countryside. Getting a first choice spot for the Last Post bugle ceremony in Ypres was a particular bonus. As a Canadian, Flanders Fields has huge emotional weight and I was so grateful to visit. Very happy to have chosen this particular tour.

This tour was amazing. The guide Johan was very passionate .His knowledge about Belgium and the war was incredible. learnt so much on this tour. He even stopped at significant sites related to Australian and NZ soldiers when he found out a lot of the passengers were from there. The driver also did an incredible job navigating his way around very challenging roads for a bus. A long day but definitely worth it.

Poor timing

Dan_T, May 2026
Excellent and extremely knowledgable guide. The tour itself did not include near enough time to visit the Flanders museum which in my mind is the highlight of the trip and very little time to eat if you wanted to see the museum at all. Would recommend for all other sites but if you want to properly visit the museum I would not recommend with group

This is a truly moving experience and one absolutely worth doing. Our guide, Dietrich, was incredibly insightful and really helped me to understand everything that happened during the battle of Flanders — tho coming in with some knowledge doesn’t hury. Additionally, he gave context of what was going on before WW1 with the country of Belgium and that was both super interesting and helpful. Since I don’t see it any of the other reviews, there is both a lunch a dinner break in Ypres, but you are on your own, that said, packing food is not necessary. I would totally recommend anyone looking for a really enlightening history tour to check this out. It is a long day, but it’s worth it. We left from Brussels and it’s about a 2 hour round trip both ways.

A Really Full Day in Flanders

Rick_M, May 2026
A long day worth the trip. The Guide was a wealth of information and very professional. The bus had to make a second stop in Brugge to pick up passengers. Delayed us slightly coming an going. We're glad we did it to see for ourselves some of the most terrible battles of WW1. Know what you are getting into before the trip. Worthwhile in every way.

Everything was great. The tour guide was knowledgeable. The things we saw....awesome. it was great until we had to go back to Bruge to drop the tour giude . This extenden the trip by 1.5 hr. We were back by 10.30pm......unacceptable.....ruined the whole day.

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Dear customer, Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re very happy to read that you found the tour great overall, with a knowledgeable guide and awesome sights. At the same time, we truly understand your frustration about the late return and how it impacted your day. Kindly note that the detour to Bruges is done for the pick-up and drop-off of passengers, not exclusively for the tour guide, and this is how the tour is advertised. The duration of the tour is 13 hours and on the day of your visit everything was on schedule, including the return time around 22:30. We recognize that this can feel very late, and we will keep working on how we communicate the timing so expectations are clear from the start. Your feedback is important and helps us improve the experience for future guests. Regards Brussels City Tours

Misleading Itinerary

Carl_K, Apr 2026
Misleading itinerary! Bus arrived late at pickup and we were informed we would be driving one hour to Brugge to pick up other passengers. Then we would begin the tour. At the end of the tour the bus would drop off the passengers at Brugge then another hour dive to Brussels to drop us off. We would spend two hours driving time not associated with our advertised itinerary. Small bus used instead of a regular coach. Four of us got off the van as soon as we learned of this diversion to Brugge.

A long day trip to Flanders

Donald_H, Jul 2025
This day trip was led by our guide Diederik, who was informative and professional, clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the war years in Flanders. Each of the programmed stops was interesting and sequenced to add layers to the historical period. The downside of the very long day (11.5 hours) was the detour to Bruges to collect and drop off 2 participants which adds considerable additional on road time. This practice has been mentioned frequently by past reviewers but clearly the company is not prepared to think creatively to address the matter.

Great day trip

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. Was a long day, we had 2 children (14 & 10) with us. A lot of sites to visit, but potentially could have visited less memorial sites & made it a shorter day. But would recommend

We Will Remember Them

Stuart_W, May 2025
A long day but a great day for history buffs and those wanting a reminder of the horrors and waste of life war causes! Last Post memorable/ we were lucky to have a choir as well- hard not to shed a tear or two! It is a long day so be prepared- if you don’t like getting on and off buses or late finishes give it a swerve but a 10/10 from me - thanks to Diedrich (sorry if wrong spelling) your knowledge was impressive! Stepping out the front line gave perspective and reassured the futility of war.

A very educational experience

Very easy to book and payment not taken until 48 hours before trip and could cancel if needed too. All on time, good guide and driver. Did miss one stop because of local marathon being held, but that was outside of the tours control.

Excellent and fascinating experience

caroline_c, Sep 2024
Visiting the german cemetery was very interesting. The allied war graves were fascinating and the Ypes ceremony sombre and respectful.
