Itinerary

Begin your morning in central Beijing and set out on a small-group walking tour that makes it easier to find where locals actually eat breakfast. With a guide leading the way, head into some of the city’s oldest hutong neighborhoods, avoiding tourist food streets and navigating directly to everyday cafes, street stalls, and small shops.

As you walk, stop to sample a range of traditional breakfast foods while learning how locals start their day. Instead of guessing what to order, your guide explains the dishes and the routines behind them, helping you understand how food fits into daily life in the hutongs.

Tastings may include silken tofu with savory toppings, brown sugar donuts, and popular breakfast items such as steamed buns, fried dough, and sweet soy milk. You can also watch fresh jianbing (savory crepes) being prepared before finishing with a bowl of almond pudding.

Understanding Beijing through it's food

Zener_T, Nov 2025
It was our first day in beijing and we thought this tour would be a good way to kick start our 10 day tour and boy were we right! Our tour guide Garth was passionate and had a good knowledge of the history behind the food we tasted. This sharing of food origin gave a different and interesting insight into the city of Beijing

The breakfast tour was...

Yuri_K, May 2025
The breakfast tour was fantastic. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, insightful, and friendly. We started near the Lama Temple and explored the surrounding area on foot. We got to try a wide variety of dishes, including some lesser-known but very authentic local foods. I enjoyed the tour so much that I expressed interest in joining his night tour as well. He said I could join, but unfortunately, I never received any follow-up email. That lack of communication ended up throwing off my evening plans. That said, the morning experience was truly a highlight of my trip, and I would still wholeheartedly recommend the breakfast tour to anyone wanting an authentic taste of the city.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Dear Yuri - We’re really glad you thought the Hutong Breakfast Tour was fantastic and enjoyed the experience enough to want to join the Old Beijing Dinner Tour. We think we may have the wrong email address for you. We were Cc’d on your guide’s email to you after the tour and also sent a second follow-up email later. We’re so sorry neither of them reached you. Please let us know if you’re visiting Beijing again and we’ll make sure you’re able to join us for dinner. We’re really thrilled to hear breakfast with us was a highlight of tour time in Beijing and we’re very appreciative of your feedback and recommendation. Thanks!

A must do food tour!

Highly recommend this tour and the company. We did multiple tours in Beijing and this was the winner. We were not sure about a breakfast tour but it was awesome. Lots of great food, awesome guide, food focused, informative, and fun.

Tasty food tour

Garth provided an exceptional tour experience during my time in Beijing, ensuring my every need was taken care of. His extensive knowledge, friendly demeanor, and attention to detail truly enhanced my visit. Not only did he offer insightful commentary about the city's rich history and culture, but he also introduced me to some amazing local cuisine. A fantastic guide and a delightful companion - my trip to Beijing was truly unforgettable thanks to Garth!

Would highly recommend this tour - Garth is a great guide, you get to try a wide range of different foods and really explore the area but also I found it so helpful just to figure out how things ‘work’ in China - how to order and pay etc which sounds simple but can be quite overwhelming when you don’t know! I thought Garth was really kind and fun and I felt really taken care of, which as a solo female traveller mattered a lot. I’ve now booked another tour with the same country for Shanghai!

Great walking food tour in Beijing

Martin_T, Mar 2024
Great way to see Beijing local suburbs and taste the local breakfast food. Garth our guide was great, nice to see a fellow Aussie in Beijing but speaking excellent mandarin. Garth took us to different food stores and explained what they are and the stories behind the food, like the origin of the dim sim which I didn’t know. We love the freshly made warm ‘donkey rolled in dust’ mochi, and the lively lady who made them. Garth also went out of his way to get us some boxes and tape as we needed to send some parcels home. An excellent tour and a great informative guide. A highly recommended tour.

Wonderful food experience and much more!

Richard_T, Aug 2023
The tour was wonderful, our guide Garth was an integral part of the entire experience. The tour location was well planned and thought out, providing the opportunity to understand and experience varied and interesting foods, visit local fresh food markets and discuss cultural history of the Hutongs. To be enjoyed by all!

Had an amazing time and experience...

Had an amazing time and experience. I was fortunate as it was just me and the guide. We made so many stops and I had to really pace myself with the amount of food. So so delicious. Highly recommend this tour.
