Amazing experience. This is best way to see the Great Wall if you are staying in Beijing. Jiankou is not crowded at all and the views are stunning. It’s not until a few hours in that you start to see other tourists as you get closer to Mutianyu. Peter was a very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly guide. It was really nice spending the day with him and he took me to a great local restaurant for lunch on the way back to Beijing. The driver was safe and reliable and the luxury, electric SUV was very comfortable. My only caution is to point out that the first 90 minutes of the hike are somewhat strenuous, and the footing is a little slippery. But as long as you are at a decent fitness level it should be fine. Don’t miss this tour!

We had a lovely day hiking with James! He was thorough, friendly and relaxed and we felt very comfortable and safe throughout. It was my husband’s birthday and James even got him a delicious cake to cut on a watch tower with amazing views! The lunch was homey and delicious. I really can’t say enough good things - on the whole, a once in a lifetime experience tailored to our specific needs and wishes. Highly recommend!

Fantastic experience to hike along a wild portion of the Great Wall. Comfortable ride out to the wall. Peter was an amazing and attentive guide. My husband speaks Chinese so he taught us in both English and Mandarin- so my husband could work on his speaking and listening skills.
Hike starts with a one mile switchback hike through a wooded (relatively steep) trail to the first guard tower. Here the views are incredible! We then hiked 1-1.5 miles along a rustic wild portion of the wall- active archeological site, trees & greenery growing up through the wall. Then we transitioned to the more tourist/improved section- this was still plenty of climbing up and down stairs. This section was still amazingly beautiful and a good chance to get a feel of what the wall would have been like when used. Then it was a long downhill walk on a stepped path to the entrance parking lot. In total, (according to my garmin) we completed about 5 miles.
Peter walked at our pace- so this is definitely doable but would recommend you be in good physical shape. We learned so much about the Wall and had plenty of time to stop for photos. Water and hiking poles were provided as well as a delicious lunch.
A once in a life time experience. The Great Wall is truly one of the wonders of the world. Must do! In my two weeks in China, this was my favorite activity.

This tour (hike) was amazing! The guide, Peter, was very kind, professional, spoke English very well, and ensured I was always safe and comfortable. The beginning of the hike is the most strenuous part (trail to get on the wall). Once on the wall, it’s mostly fine. It does go up and down and the Jiankou section is not restored, so it’s a good exercise. There are some tricky parts that require to be in good shape, careful where you step your feet, and not afraid of heights. Make sure you dress accordingly as it can be cold in the morning and quite hot midday. And wear hiking shoes as this is a real hike, with sometimes slippery surfaces (lose gravel) and climbing up/down. There’s also a part where you have to slide in a very tight corridor (so tight it’s hard to turn around): this is when you leave the unrestored Jiankou section and enter the more crowded and restored Mutianyu section (gorgeous as well but many people there — so not as interesting to me than the wild and desert Jiankou section)
Peter warned me every time there was a tricky section so it went very smoothly for me. And he follows your pace, so you can either walk fast, slow, or stop regularly to take photos, it’s all good. The Jiankou section is absolutely gorgeous and no one’s there (we just met a group of 3 people at some point, that’s it). It’s wild and, in my opinion, one of the most charming part of the wall around Beijing. If you want to see a wild part of the wall by doing a short hike (3.5-4.5 hours), that’s the one for you.
The driver was also really great. Kind, funny, and very considerate.
After the hike (around 2pm, depending on how fast you walk) the lunch at the restaurant was really good (and with large portions). You can choose whatever you want, it’s part of the package. Then you can doze off in the car as the driver has to endure (very gracefully) the crazy Beijing traffic to get you back to your hotel room (about 2-2.5 hours if your hotel is in central Beijing).
All in all it was a top notch experience to enjoy a gorgeous hike on one of the most beautiful parts of the wall without any of the hassle.
I very warmly recommend this tour and have only high praises for Peter and the driver!

Peter is an amazing guide and took care of everything to make this a fabulous and memorable trip. High standard of car picked me up and took me to Great Wall. Peter explained the history of the wall during the journey. The hike was truly breathtaking with hardly anyone else on the un-renovated parts. Peter took the hike at my pace and looked out for my safety at all times. After the hike Peter took me to a very nice local restaurant for a lovely lunch. He was great company and chatted throughout the day. Thank you Peter!

A somewhat exhausting trek - but so worth it. A day to remember.! We are over 60 and managed it fine

Book it! I booked a solo tour on my last day in Beijing. Not awkward at all - spending the day hiking with Peter is like spending the day with a dear friend. Peter knows the terrain extremely well and adjusts for your pace, level, and tolerance for adventure! I got to see parts of the Wall most people don’t - and venture across less traveled ruins where you won’t see a single other person into the more maintained and busier section. It was hard, scary at times, and one of the best things I’ve ever done. And Peter made sure to take tons of photos of the experience. This was the best way to see the Wall. Thanks for a perfect day!!

We were picked up in a beautiful electric vehicle. Peter the guide was conversant in English and Chinese, talked about the history of the Great Wall and life in China in general.
It was a 2hrs ride to the start of the trek. It’s off the usual route so we had to hike through a forested area. First 40mins was tough as we hiked up the side of the steep mountain, fortunately hiking poles were provided. Peter was patient and attentive stopping for short breaks on the ascent. Once we reached the top there’s a makeshift ladder to climb, felt like the mongols invading. Million dollar view at the top and we were the only peeps there. The “wild” side of the Great Wall is simply magnificent, desolate and beautiful.
Slowly trek across the wild side to civilization. At one point we had to climb up the side of the wall to join the tourist part of the wall. That’s when it becomes a drag going up and down stairs together with the hundreds of tourist to our end point. Had lunch at a quaint restaurant with tasty dishes, followed by 1.5hrs ride back to hotel. Above average level of fitness required. Highly recommend this tour, probably the highlight of our Beijing trip.

Great tour to see the old wall with a nice hike around the nature. Overall we had around 12 hours on this day and see a lot

Combining unrestored, quiet "wild wall" of Jiankou with the beautiful restored but much more popular Mutianyu, you really get the best of both words. Our guide Peter appointed by Greatwall Trek Club only further enhanced the experience by being personable and committed to excellent service. He is the only guide in our China travels to come right up to our hostel instead of making us walk to a bigger hotel for pickup. He provided snacks and water, helped take some photos, and generally provided great conversation and recommendations.

This was an excellent hike on the unrestored part of the Great Wall. Our guide, James, arranded promptly at our hotel and provided both of us with a walking stick, water and snack. We only met a couple of other people on the trail in this section. The hike was quite manageable. James stopped many times for photo ops which included lots of information too. He spoke fluent English. James surprised us by presenting us with a certificate for completing the hike. Our names were written in English and Chinese on the certificate. James signed and dated it. After the hike, James took us to a restaurant and ordered us authentic Chinese food. It was delicious and unlike any Chinese food I had ever eaten. I would highly recommend this hike with James as the guide!

I really do not do very many tours and I thought a personal tour might be a little uncomfortable, but I was pleasantly suprised. Peter was our tour guide, he made this experience more than just a tourist accomplishment. Peter is very knowledgeable about the great wall and Chinese history, I felt like I gained incredible insight into Chinese traditions and culture by having him there. He was very respectful and thoughtful and it was nice to have someone there to take pictures. At the end of it all he took us to a restaurant that he himself likes, and the food was great. This was a great experience and I highly recommend it.

Danke!
