The tour guide Danny was excellent, delivering commentary in English & Italian. The lighthouse stop seemed to be an excuse to support the onsite bakery/restaurant. The walk to the lighthouse and the stairs to the top once inside are not intended for less mobile. A documentary played on a loop but with no indication how far into the script it was at any point. Few visitors seemed to know it was even available. By the time I saw some of the history of the Lighthouse and was motivated to attempt the stairs, it was time to depart.
The Sunnmore Museum was just walking through period cabins. Not my first trip to Norway nor to a similar "museum", so it was disappointing to me. Narration by museum employees or volunteers would enhanced the experience. Did have an opportunity to chat with 2 volunteers (students) in one cabin. He was roasting coffee beans on a wood-burning stove. She was making sweet treats using a rolling pin to thin potato bread dough, bake it, and create small squares filled with butter and sugar. Quite tasty! Had to wait 10 minutes for an inconsiderate family of four: enough said. Museum not conducive to mobility impaired visitors. One obviously can't go inside the cabins in a wheelchair or on a scooter.
City tour was fast: size of the bus, width of the streets and traffic denaity complicated enjoyment of the landmarks.
Ignore the GPS coordinates of the meeting point if you're on a cruise ship! I tried to follow the Google directions and everything step lengthened my arrival time. Asked at least 3 other tour operators before an information assistant finally identified the correct bus. Viator instructions didn't provide tour operator company name. After 40 minutes of walking, I arrived at the bus in the parking lot of the cruise port - a 5 minute walk from the ship!

Thank you for your feedback. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed Danny’s guiding and his commentary in both English and Italian, but are sorry that the experience did not meet your personal expectations.
We would like to clarify that the lighthouse and Sunnmøre Museum are independent venues, and their facilities and exhibitions are managed by the venues themselves. We regularly welcome guests with limited mobility on this excursion without any issues, although certain historic buildings and stairs at the venues may naturally have limitations. The behaviour of other visitors is, of course, their own responsibility, and we expect all participants to be respectful and considerate towards others. Should behaviour become particularly inappropriate or disruptive, our team will certainly address it.
Regarding the meeting point, our designated meeting point is the cruise terminal, as clearly stated in the tour information. Unfortunately, choosing to follow a different GPS location is outside our responsibility.
This is a shared group excursion with a fixed itinerary, as is standard among tour operators in the area. Coordinated itineraries help avoid overcrowding at the venues and unnecessary congestion on the narrow roads in our small city, ensuring a smoother experience for everyone. Guests who prefer to set their own pace and spend more time at specific locations may wish to consider a private excursion, which we would be more than happy to arrange.

The bus was clean and comfortable. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the local landmarks and customs. We had a stunning view from the lighthouse and time to shop in the gift shop. I especially enjoyed seeing the turf house.

The tour was supposed to be in English however it was in German and English which took away from the experience
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you for your feedback.
We always try to operate our excursions in one language whenever possible. However, as we operate in an international cruise environment with guests from many different countries, there are occasions where we need to combine languages due to group sizes and availability.
In these situations, our guides provide information in both languages so that all guests can fully enjoy the excursion. The tour was therefore still operated as advertised, with English included as one of the guiding languages.
We understand that everyone has personal preferences, but multilingual tours are sometimes a practical necessity in international tourism. This does not affect the quality of the excursion or the information provided by our professional guides.
We appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us and hope that, despite your preference for a single-language tour, you enjoyed the excursion and the beautiful destination.

The pick up and meeting process was very smooth. Loved that the staff all had on yellow jackets. It was a great tour and well run.

Local tour guide that provided wonderful insights and history about the area. Wonderful experience and glad we did something out of the city and on a few other islands.
Elizabeth_P, Jun 2026
A very informative guide and excellent driver made this trip to the lighthouse, Viking museum and Alesund most interesting. Lots of info about the area and the Country. A very good way to get familiar with the City and the surrounding area.
Robert_M, May 2026
It was a very good overview of the city and region. The open air museum was interesting and the hike to the top of the lighthouse gave a great view. Our young Spanish guide did a great job!
Cynthia_L, May 2026
Good overview and info about the areas visited. The tour guide we had was very knowledgeable and friendly.
swartlouiseymailcom, May 2026
Rey low keyed experience with lots of time to explore. Take your time and have some coffee while you visit the lighthouse and museum.

Very narrow and steep stairs in lighthouse. The guide was friendly, but we could not always hear him. Would be nice to have some shopping time included.

This is one of the best tours of Alesund you will find. Most tours do a similar route but visit Mount Aksla instead of the lighthouse. Mount Aksla is nice, but it can be easily summited by a quick hike from the center of town (even for someone who is out of shape). On the other hand, the lighthouse is remote, hard to access, and well worth a visit. I would highly recommend this tour.

Overall, a very positive experience. Our guide (forgot to write down his name, he was Italian but had been living in Norway for the last 10 years) was very knowledgeable and provided just the right amount of information without being overbearing. Everything went as expected.

This is a morning bus tour with thrre main stops. Pickup was at the pier where our shop was docked. Danny was an excellent guide. We got to see part of the old city as well as the islands.

The "ultimate turen" was well-organised and clearly designed to accommodate a broad audience, but the experience felt largely like a standard "drop-off" tour without much depth. The guide was fluent in both English and German and delivered the information with enthusiasm, but the content came across as rather superficial and tailored to very general crowd. For us personally, the tour did not quite live up to expectations, and we didn't feel it was with the price.
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Thank you for your review of our Ultimate Sightseeing Tour in Ålesund. We're sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. We strive to offer quality tours at a fair price and are sorry to hear that we fell short in your estimation. We thank you for joining us and we hope that you had a lovely vacation here in Norway!
Jennifer_P, Jul 2025
The tour was a Spanish speaking tour as well as English. We had no idea and the guide spent more time talking in Spanish and said everything twice. We left at the first stop and just chose to walk around ourselves and not take this tour. We wasted over 600.00 and should have chosen to do something else. Unless you need a Spanish speaking guide don’t choose this for your day in Norway.
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Thank you for your review of our Ultimate Sightseeing Tour in Ålesund. We happily welcome people to our city from all over the world, not just English speakers. On your tour, your guide would have given the same information in both languages. We won't apologize for accommodating people of diverse nationalities on our excursion, but are sorry to hear that this affected your tour so much as to feel our tour was only worth 1 star. We hope that you had a nice vacation here in Norway.

Too many people on this tour. Couldn’t hear the guide as couldn’t get close enough. Envied those I saw on other tours who had quiet boxes. Feel we missed out on important information about locations we visited. Enjoyed the locations we visited but don’t feel we were culturally enriched.

Thank you for your review of our Ultimate Sightseeing Tour in Ålesund. Our scheduled tours are generally on a standard sized coach as are other tours in the area. We do also offer smaller private tours, but they are only bookable directly through our company. We loved this tour. Our tour guide and driver were both kind and knowledgeable. The open air museum was amazing. A bit of steep walk for a part of it but if you can manage that it is amazing. The real highlight however is the lighthouse. The whole area looks like a postcard.

Great reminder of life of Vikings at Viking museum. Visit to historic still operating lighthouse. General sightseeing. Value for money compared to cruise tours. Fully cognizant of cruise timetable.

Saw some interesting sights in and around Alesund. We weren't warned about sites that challenged people with mobility issues, and there were several in our group. There were steep inclines at the museum and of course stairs at the lighthouse. Guide was pleasant.

Not much interaction with the guide. Museum/ village was great and most of the tour time was there. However you were left to your own devices so may has well have just gone there on your own.
Lighthouse was good but again, no interaction with guide. Stairway in lighthouse was dangerous as many people banged their heads ( be aware).
Not much time spent in Alesund centre itself and could not hear anything guide said due to volume of people.
It was really a mode of transport rather than a tour

Enjoyed our drive around Alesund. Saw some amazing sites. The lighthouse was amazing and the museum very interesting.
Rachel_F, Jun 2025
We chose this tour because it seems to give us several things to see in the area. We really only spent time at the museum and the lighthouse. More time could be allowed so all could have had the opportunity to go up into the lighthouse. The museum was
an open air stroll thru some of the historic turf house and there was a building with several Viking boats. We enjoyed our time there. We really didn’t get a tour of the art nouveau in the city center.
Response from Host, Jun 2025
Thank you for taking the time to review our Ultimate Sightseeing Tour in Ålesund and providing your valuable feedback. We appreciate it. The visit to Alnes does allow time to go into the lighthouse, so we're not sure where the miscommunication was there. Our apologies. We do hope that you had a lovely day with us despite wishing for more time. Thank you for joining us here in beautiful Ålesund. We hope that you enjoyed your time in Norway!

While our tour of Ålesund had the potential to be an enjoyable experience, the conduct of one individual tainted the journey. The tour guides were friendly, engaging, and eager to assist, making an effort to create a welcoming atmosphere. However, the behavior of the bus driver, Julian, was unacceptable and deeply disappointing.
After mistakenly opening the door while it was closed, I immediately apologized for the error. Despite this, Julian continued to berate and scold both me and my friend—who walks with a cane—treating us as though we were misbehaving children rather than paying customers. His aggressive approach made us feel bullied and unnecessarily humiliated.
When the bus was finally opened and I attempted to board, Julian once again confronted me, demanding my name. Already frustrated by his behavior, I asked for his name in return. His demeanor throughout the experience showed an unsettling lack of professionalism, respect, and compassion—particularly toward my friend, whose mobility challenges should have warranted at least a basic level of consideration.
While the two tour guides later apologized upon learning about the incident, the apology should have come from Julian himself. His refusal to acknowledge his disrespectful conduct only reinforced our sense of discrimination and disdain from him.
The tour boasts a high-end bus as its selling point, but if the people behind it lack basic courtesy and professionalism, then the comfort it provides becomes irrelevant. The negative experience overshadows any luxury, turning what should have been an enjoyable excursion into an upsetting one. For over $133 per person, this tour was simply not worth the money.
Ålesund offers plenty of hop-on, hop-off bus tours available at the port—many of which provide a pleasant experience without the risk of encountering rude staff. I'd rather spend less and actually enjoy my time, so if you’re looking to book a tour, save your money and choose the hop on hop off bus.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback on one of our drivers. We are terribly sorry to hear about your experience and take this very seriously. We have passed this message on to his superiors at our bus suppliers. We thank you again for joining us and for providing us with this valuable feedback. Again, please accept our sincere apologies.

This was a very informative tour and provided some amazing photo ops. The views from the Alnes Lighthouse were amazing. Sunnmore Museum provided the opportunity to see how homes were built in centuries past as well different boats.

The most memorable part of the Alesund excursion was the bit at the end with Alness Lighthouse. 185 steps to the top but the view was worth it!

This tour gave us a great combination of sites and experiences, and Sandra was a wonderful guide. We started out going up a hill to an overlook of Alesund (not the one that has the observatory). Then we had over an hour at an outdoor museum of old dwellings. We drove to a couple of neighboring islands via bridges and underground tunnels. We were able to visit a lighthouse and climb to the top (very steep steps) for beautiful views, and spend a minute at the beach nearby made up of unique granite boulders.
We stopped at a very old Viking era church, and returned to Alesund and got a drive through town with commentary from our guide. We saw so many things, and still had time to do some sightseeing and shopping around town on our own afterward.
I will caution that there is a lot of walking involved on this tour, in order to see the promised sites, and much of it is uphill, or up stairs. There were some in the group that were frustrated that the tour description wasn't clear about that.

Our tour guide, Sandra, was knowledgeable and friendly. We enjoyed the tour overall but it was a little too long. And as it was towards the end of the season, some cafes and stores were already closed for the season.
