Itinerary
Meet your guide and group in central Rome and travel south by air-conditioned coach. On arrival in Pompeii, join an official guide for a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed archaeological site. The site is large and still being excavated, so the tour heads to the main highlights to make the most of your time, taking in the homes and shops buried under volcanic ash and covering the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79.
If you've added the lunch upgrade, the tour continues to Ercolano on the Bay of Naples for a three-course pizza lunch with coastal views. The afternoon then turns to Mt. Vesuvius, where, depending on the option booked, either hike to the crater or take a more relaxed walk along the slopes with a geologist.
The day ends with the coach journey back to central Rome.

This was a great family trip! I highly recommend it. The restaurant was had a spectacular view of the water and Naples. The tour in Pompeii was informative and interesting. Loved seeing the ancient ruins. The bus driver navigated the twisted roads that took us to Mt Vesuvius like a pro.

Good experience and tour. The bus ride there allowed for our legs to. Recover after several days of walking through Rome. Bus had good air conditioning. Had about an hour of free time to explore after the tour. Train tickets plus Pompeii ticket on own worked out to be more expensive than this tour

Giovanni , the guide at Pompeii was awesome. Actually from Pompeii and knows the history. Patricia, our guide from start to finish , was clever, funny, also knowledgeable and a great host to spend 6 hours on a bus with. The hike to top of Mt Vesuvius was incredible once you arrived there. Totally worth the effort.
The one negative would be the bus ride. The driver was literally all over the road. Couldn’t hold a lane. I thought maybe that was normal , but it wasn’t. But then this same driver easily navigated the difficult drive to Mt Vesuvius. Even with the scratchy bus ride, The trip was 100% worth it.

Really nice tour at a nice pace. The weather was hotter than normal for the time of year and the guide took that into account and made sure everyone was doing OK. Very nice pace and interesting information.

Eduardo was an excellent guide and worked hard to ensure the group was informed and also entertained. The specific guide around the sight (Enzo) was very knowledge and passionate about the Pompeii , not so knowledgable about how to use a microphone (its not use if you dont speak into it) so you had to be close to him to get the full impact of his knowledge (which was excellent). The trip to the top of Vesuvius was spectacular. An excellent day, worth every penny.

We had a great tour leader , driver and a comfortable bus. a great way to see Pompeii if you only have one day. The Pompeii tour guide was also excellent.

This was such an amazing trip!
Firstly our tour guide Lillia was so passionate and was very clear explaining everything to us. It was very well organised.
Lillia took us to the interesting parts of pompeii. We learnt alot. We also got to see the new excurvation going on which was amazing.
The coach driver romel ( i hope ive spelt correct) was explaining everything along the journey upto pompeii. He had a great sense of humour and really made the trip fun.
Was very well organised, meeting point with city wonders was accurate with arrival and departure times.
Such a lovely, emotional and fun day of history, with a tour guide who made it extra special. Thankyou.

A wonderful full day away from Rome while seeing amazing ruins in Pompeii and magnificent views atop Mt. Vesuvius. What we recognized is the sense of life walking the preserved streets of Pompeii. You could almost sense the people going about their daily business, before the eruption. We did not expect the size of the city and the details still vivid from the homes and business. Anna, our guide was fantastic, lunch was very good, and the bus travel there and back provided a beautiful view of Italy's countryside.

Carlo, our guide, was fabulous. He was very passionate about sharing information and very personable and fun to listen to. I would not have enjoyed Pompeii as much without his guidance. He led us to the most important sites that made the most of the limited time we had there. We had about a two hour tour, no Vesuvius and no lunch option. I expected to buy lunch on my own during the 45 mins free time portion of the day.
I am knocking off one star because the lunch was not well explained. We who chose to return to the meeting point restaurant were all funneled into a large room with no menus and no explanation. I went up to the staff and found out that the price would be €18 for pizza, dessert, and a drink. I was NOT ok with the lunch prepared with no questions asked. Everyone was given cheese/Margherita pizzas. I am lactose intolerant so I cannot eat this pizza or dessert. Another woman in our group could not eat gluten. How can they expect to just feed people a surprise pizza in this world of many dietary needs? Luckily, I explained to them quickly enough so I got a cheese-less pepperoni pizza instead, but they charged me €4 extra for the meat. I really wanted to just see a menu and pick something lactose free for me, and something low-sugar low carb for my diabetic mother. Instead they assumed we can all eat this pizza without consulting with the guests first. They should just clearly inform people, that there is a discounted combo option , and ask if we would like to participate. I would gladly lose the discount over losing my health, eating foods that would make us terribly ill. Restaurant Vesuvius should be clear with each guest next time, especially since we had not chosen lunch as part of our tour package.
Now aside from this terrible lunch oversight, the tour itself was Excellent!! The guide was great, the bus ride was long but comfortable, and included a rest stop each way with free toilets and sandwiches and souvenirs for purchase. The communication in the viator app was good. Overall I recommend this tour! Just plan to avoid the Vesuvius restaurant at the end. Choose a neighboring restaurant or Caffe, or talk to the staff immediately instead of waiting around for no menus like I did.

Paula was knowledgeable and willing to help. Pizza was good and the Vesuvius experience was awesome. I am an older person and was able to walk up to the crater.
Kimberly_D, Jun 2026
Antonino & Luca were the best duo for this full-day adventure! They were both kind, considerate, and knowledgeable. I couldn’t recommend this trip enough to someone who wants to get out of Rome for the day, eat delicious pizza, stroll up mt.Vesuvius and of course see the history of Pompeii. This was a journey I made by myself and I loved every second of it (and I felt comfortable).

Great day trip
The volcano walk was hard on your legs though
Lunch was nice
The extra stop at the limoncello sales man was dum
Sabrina_H, Jun 2026
This was hands down the best tour of our stay in Rome! Between the beautiful weather, the amazing tour guides and comfortable bus - money well spent! Highly recommended!

Just buy a train ticket to Pompeii and save time, money, and your sanity. The recorded audio from the park app will be clearer and more comprehensive.
This City Wonders tour is 2 hours of Pompeii, wrapped up in a aggravating 14 hour day. The City Wonders tour guide was difficult to understand and not helpful. She consistently ignored me when I asked her to clarify information about the schedule or plan for the day.
At Pompeii, we were assigned to a smaller group of 20 and a local guide. We spent 1:45 hr in the park and it was very interesting, but too short a time to really appreciate everything.
I had selected the geologist option and there was no geologist, or any evidence that there ever could have been a geologist. I could not get an explanation or apology for why there there was no geologist.
There was no guided walk at Vesuvius either. We were dumped at the gate with a xeroxed paper ticket with no guide or bus for two hours.
The "park" at Vesuvius was so disappointing, with no view, an shlocky "gift store" selling fake volcanic rock souvenirs, and very limited seating. The path to the top was steep and many people were slipping on the loose rock.
The City Wonders guide repeatedly promised a special unadvertised surprise later in the day. I will tell you what that is. It is a visit to a lemoncello shop where you get the "special" opportunity to buy the same liquor you can buy anywhere in Italy.
The train is very easy, much faster and more comfortable. Buy an audio tour and take your time. Pompeii is incredible and this tour only scratches the surface.

A fun little day trip! We wish it was done in reverse so that it’s not so hot when you hike up Vesuvius but then that would mean it would be really hot in Pompeii so it really is up to personal preference. Hike was easy/moderate. About a mile up but very crowded on the day we went. The path was not as slippery as everyone had said to us but it’s definitely better to be over prepared than underprepared! Many people had to purchase water on the way up due to the heat.
Our tour guide, Marius, was fantastic! He kept us up to date with our plans while we were on the bus and next steps via the app and was easily accessible via WhatsApp. He also kept us informed on bathroom stops which was greatly appreciated and allowed us to plan around it! Marius also gave some great tips about Rome and fun facts about Italy.
Miriam_D, Jun 2026
Marius was a great guide. He explained things so well. He informed us of history, how to shop and ideas for food!
The headphones around the ear didn't work well. It was not our guides fault.
Michael_B, Jun 2026
Rushed through Pompeii. Have been telling my children about the models of the people frozen in time and saw 3 behind glass out of 200 because there was no time. We saw a very small fraction of Pompeii due to an overly long pizza lunch. The guide was so rushed at Pompeii that he walked and talked very fast and we had an enormous group for 1 guide! The headset kept cutting out because it was impossible to be near the guide with an enormous group. Veronica our main guide taught us a lot about History and we appreciated that.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're glad to hear that Veronica's historical knowledge and guidance were appreciated and that you learned a lot throughout the day.
As Pompeii is an extensive archaeological site, the tour is designed to focus on its main highlights within the time available. That said, we're sorry to hear that the visit felt rushed and that the group size and headset issues impacted your enjoyment. We appreciate your comments and will share them with our team as we continue to improve our tours.
Jeffery_G, Jun 2026
Tour guide, Veronica was fabulous. Bus ride was decent, sites were fantastic. Overall a great experience.
Hannah_W, Jun 2026
This tour was nice. I ended up going by myself and had no trouble staying with or keeping up with the group. I do wish we got longer at the site, as you can’t see much in an hour and a half, but that would be hard to do coming from Rome since it already takes the whole day with travel. Overall, I enjoy it and would reommend
Megan_S, Jun 2026
The trip was wonderful. Pompeii was more than we expected. The pizza lunch was the best pizza my 18 year old boys have ever had.
Marci_H, Jun 2026
Great location to visit, but ensure you can get a tour guide that knows your language well and can articulate. Ours was very hard to understand, which is why the rating.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Dear Marci_H,
Thank you for your feedback, and please accept our sincere apologies for the language difficulties you experienced during your visit. While we guarantee that all our tours are conducted in English, it is true that for many of our expert local guides, English is their second language. We strictly work with certified professionals who possess deep historical knowledge, but we truly regret that our guide's articulation made the tour difficult for you to understand on this occasion.
Your comments are very important to us, and we will share this feedback with our team to help improve the clarity and quality of our commentary. We appreciate your insights.
Steve_B, May 2026
Felt rushed as we moved between areas quickly.. The audio earpiece I was given didn't work. So, I couldn't hear the guide and didn't learn much.
Response from Host, May 2026
Hi Steve,
Thank you for sharing your feedback.
We’re sorry to hear that the pace of the tour felt rushed and that your audio earpiece was not functioning properly during the experience.
Your comments are very important to us, and we will share this feedback with our operations team to help improve both the tour pacing and the quality checks for our audio equipment.
We appreciate you joining us and hope you were still able to enjoy the unique experience of visiting Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius.

Every part of this trip was well organized and pieced together professionally. Anna, who ran the tour was very knowledgeable. Bus driver got us there and back in one piece. Hike up Mt Vesuvius was steeper than you might think (and I’m from the Rocky Mountain region). Be prepared for the lemon stand sales pitch. Pizza lunch was good. Did not like the independent Pompeii tour guide. Very rushed and hard to understand. The group was large, so not always able to see what she was describing because she was so far ahead.
Anna_H, May 2026
Ion was an incredible tour guide for our trip. He was very knowledgeable and added a great sense of humor to our day. I would recommend this experience any time you want to get out of Rome for the day. Mt. Vesuvius was a hike but the view is so worth it. The pizza lunch was also some of the best pizza we’ve ever had! 10000/10
Kenneth_B, May 2026
This is a great trip. Nice bus and very good driver. Our tour leader took very good care of us. Pompeii was very interesting. The planning was veray good with breaks and a great pizza meal. I didn't hike to the top of vesuvius but the scenery was very good arount the mountain.
Lorena_C, May 2026
It was very educational, the guide was very knowledgeable he knows his job and very patient and funny
Stephen_M, May 2026
This is a wonderful experience to see the ancient ruins and an active volcano. Paula our tour guide did an excellent job of describing what were were going to see and everything you needed to know to keep you safe and on track. The guide in Pompeii did a very nice job of explaining everything we saw. She kept a pace that everyone was able to maintain.
While it is a long day it is surely worth your time. This is not to be missed. Rhanks again to Paula and Giovanni our driver, for making this a memorable day.
Maggie_J, May 2026
Wear good footwear..it’s a challenging climb and can be chilly even on a warm day, weather changes quickly so just hang out at the top and hopefully the sun will come out. Well timed rest breaks. Bring water.. it’s hot!
Cheryl_T, May 2026
Great trip! The meeting place was easy to find! Our tour guide was great! She was very organized and gave us interesting and informative narratives! The Pompeii section was awesome! I loved it. the guide was so knowledgeable and passionate about the subject! I loved having pizza on the way to Vesuvius! It was so good! I love the climb up to Vesuvius! It was so cool to see the crater!
Janet_B, May 2026
Very good on the way there and back as well as at Pompeii and Vesuvius. The narration on the trip by Anna was especially good. It was very crowded at Vesuvius so the tour was a bit rushed. Would have been nice to see more there but the crowd was overwhelming.
Suzie_K, May 2026
Our guide was awesome! He was very knowledgeable and gave great details about the exhibits. He was very friendly and knew all the answers to our questions. Everyone at the site knew him and he was very friendly.
