Science is made fun and accessible at Techniquest in Cardiff, one of the UK’s best science and discovery centers. Get hands-on with interactive puzzles, more than one hundred exhibits, a science theater, and Planetarium that will captivate children and adults alike, in the scenic surrounds of Cardiff’s recently-redeveloped Cardiff Bay area.

Just south of Cardiff city center, Penarth has been a popular seaside resort since Victorian times. In summer, particularly, British vacationers and international visitors alike come to experience its pebbly beaches and restored art-deco pier.

Manorbier Castle has stood as a symbol of Welsh heritage for almost a millennium, but it’s often overlooked in favor of the country’s more famous fortresses. Today, the birthplace of medieval scholar Gerald of Wales offers historical immersion and coastal sightseeing, boasting views of the Bristol Channel and beyond.

Sgwd yr Eira conjures up mystical images from its name alone, which translates as “waterfall of the snow” in English: luckily, it lives up to its title. This beloved Brecon Beacons waterfall is known for its torrent of water that you can walk behind, and is the grand finale of the Four Waterfalls Walk.

You’ll feel like you’re touching the sky at Pen-y-Fan, the flat-topped peak home to the best-known hike in the Brecon Beacons. At around 2,907 feet (886 meters), the national park’s highest point attracts walkers ascending to the summit via challenging circular routes. Those who scale it in good weather are rewarded with dramatic views that sweep the River Usk valley.

Once part of the main A55 roadway, the Conwy Suspension Bridge was one of the first road suspension bridges in the world. It is now closed to cars, but is open to pedestrians and cyclists. Designed to mimic the look of Conwy Castle (Castell Conwy), its towers and archways were built in a medieval gothic style. From the neighboring castle, you can see stunning views of the bridge.

Penrhyn Castle is a grand 19th-century fortress built for the anti-abolitionist Pennant family, who funded it from dealings in the Jamaica sugar plantations and North Wales slate industry. Today, the castle is managed by Britain’s National Trust, who invite visitors to discover its 5-story keep, neo-Norman architecture, and sizable gardens.

Often cited as Britain’s most picturesque waterway, the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal stretches through the leafy Usk Valley for around 35 miles (56 kilometers) between Brecon and Cwmbran, south of Pontypool. You can explore it by narrowboat, operating the six locks yourself, or experience it from dry land, enjoying walks or cycles along the historical towpaths.

Built in the 13th century, Conwy Castle and the Conwy Town Walls—its fortification—were part of Edward I’s “iron ring” of castles in North Wales, which were constructed during his attempt to take control of the United Kingdom. With 21 towers and three original gatehouses, the walls are less than a mile (around 1.3 kilometers) in length and remain largely undamaged.

A beloved Brecon Beacons lake shrouded in legend, Llyn-y-Fan Fach has the perfect ingredients for a hike. It’s set in the Black Mountain range, where the rugged Carmarthen Fans countryside resonates with bleating sheep and moorland. Most visitors hike the ascending 4-mile (6.5-kilometer) loop from Llaanddeusant to enjoy it and discover its legend, the Lady of the Lake.

Llandaff is a centuries-old town that lies within the city limits of Cardiff. It’s famous for its cathedral—one of the UK’s oldest Christian sites—under which early Roman burial sites have been discovered. It is said that ghosts and spirits, such as the White Lady, haunt Llandaff and roam the local woods. Beware!

Built by King Edward I in the 13th century, the now-crumbling Rhuddlan Castle is centered on an impressive diamond-shaped stronghold and was one of the first concentric castles constructed in Wales. Now, visitors can explore the foundations of the great hall, chapel, and kitchens, before climbing the castle walls for views over the surroundings.

Originally built for a Welsh prince in the 13th century, Powis Castle is now one of Britain’s finest stately homes. Behind the red sandstone façade, which is surrounded by spectacular Baroque gardens and a deer park, visitors can explore elaborately decorated 17th century dining halls and state rooms, before admiring the collection of Indian artefacts in the Clive Museum.

Hailed as one of England’s best zoos, Folly Farm promises a fun and interactive day out. Visitors can observe animals from a distance or get hands-on in the petting zoo before enjoying the fairground, big wheel, and play areas. There are also several onsite restaurants.

Enjoy breathtaking views of Snowdonia before descending into below-ground caves, lakes, and hand-carved tunnels on the UK’s steepest cable railway at the Victorian-era Llechwedd Slate Caverns. This family-friendly museum and activity center in the heart of Snowdonia National Park offers visitors an immersive introduction to Welsh mining history via interactive experiences, demonstrations, and more.

Located in Llandudno, North Wales, the Great Orme Mines is the largest prehistoric mine in the world, with areas dating back more than 4,000 years. Visitors can travel underground via a series of slopes and staircases, while above ground there is a surface walk featuring a smelting shelter and an opencast mine. Today the site continues to be an area for ongoing archaeological study.

Roughly translated as “shapely mountain,” Moel Siabod offers some of the finest views in Snowdonia (Eryri) National Park. The mountain is lesser-known than its Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) neighbor—and this is no bad thing—meaning it entices walkers instead with solitude and sweeping views over the surrounding Moelwynion massif peaks.

Situated along the North Wales coast, Conwy Quay serves as a popular spot for sightseeing with attractions such as the Smallest House in Great Britain, the Conwy Mussel Museum, and a RNLI Lifeboat Station. After taking in the scenic views along the water, be sure to grab a pint at Liverpool Arms, Conwy’s oldest traditional pub.

Conwy Mountain (Mynydd y Dref), located to the west of Conwy in North Wales, sits in the foothills of the Carneddau range of mountains, overlooking Conwy Bay. The mountain is home to wild Carneddau ponies and roaming sheep, adding to the splendor of this part of the Welsh countryside. With its natural beauty, the area serves as a popular spot for hiking, running, and walking.

Conwy’s Albion Ale House is a traditional 1920s pub specializing in locally produced beer. It also offers a wine list, spirits, bar bites, and pub games. You’ll still find the bell pushes along the chair rail, once used to summon bartenders. Visitors can sit in the lounge by the baronial-style fireplace, relax in the snug, or saddle up to the bar with a pint.

Aberconwy House is the only surviving medieval merchant's house in Conwy. It has had many uses over the years, including a hotel and antique shop. It’s now a secondhand bookshop with flexible space for community events on the upper floors. The building’s two lower stone floors support the projecting upper floor, which extends over the lower section on corbel stones.
