Things to do in  Varanasi

Down to the river to pray

On the banks of the Ganges River, Varanasi is considered India’s holiest city. It’s also among the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth. A visit here can be intense, but it’s one of the best places to go to learn about India’s spiritual traditions. Many of the things to do in Varanasi revolve around visiting temples and riverfront ghats (steps that lead down to the waters), and it’s just a short jaunt from Sarnath, famed as the spot where it's believed that Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon.

When to visit

Varanasi is at its most pleasant between October and March, when the weather is cool enough for comfortable sightseeing. The city is at its liveliest for Hindu festivals, particularly during and after Diwali (in October or November) and Ganga Mahostav, a celebration of the Ganges River. The annual Maha Shivaratri celebration, which honors Lord Shiva, is another good time for a visit. Dates change yearly, but it normally takes place in February or March.

Getting around

The older part of Varanasi—characterized by its narrow maze of lanes—is best explored on foot or by bicycle rickshaw. Most visitors also take a boat trip along the river—this is the best way to see the ghats without having to exert much energy. If you plan to take a trip out to the nearby Buddhist pilgrimage town of Sarnath, autorickshaws (tuk-tuks) and taxis are your best bet.

Traveler tips

Varanasi is known for its chaat, an umbrella term used in Northern India to refer to savory street snacks. Residents and in-the-know visitors flock to Kashi Chat Bhandar, about 10 minutes’ walk from the main Dashashwamedh Ghat. Here you can try out all sorts of Varanasi specialties, including chura matar—a mix of poha (flattened rice) and green peas—and tamatar chaat, a mix of boiled potatoes and tomatoes loaded with spices and chopped with chutney and coriander.

People Also Ask
Q:What should we not miss in Varanasi?
A:

Don't miss the evening aarti ceremony held around sunset at Dashashwamedh Ghat on the Ganges River, in which priests pay their respects to the sacred water with giant diyas (oil lamps). Come back in the morning to see the river in a different light with a sunrise boat ride.

Q:How many days are enough to visit Varanasi?
A:

You'll need at least one full day to see the sights in Varanasi, but your trip may feel rushed. If possible, give yourself two or three days, especially if you want to take day trips to Sarnath and other nearby points of interest such as the city of Prayagraj.

Q:How can I spend two days in Varanasi?
A:

Spend your first morning in Varanasi with a sunrise boat ride, followed by a tour of the old city. In the evening, attend the aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat. On your second day, head to Sarnath on the outskirts of town—it's where the Buddha gave his first sermon.

Q:What is the dress code for Varanasi?
A:

In religious Varanasi, it’s considered respectful to wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders, irrespective of your gender, particularly when visiting temples or ghats. You'll also be required to remove your footwear before entering places of worship, so sandals or slip-on shoes may be more convenient than shoes with laces.

Q:Can you get meat in Varanasi?
A:

Yes, you can get meat (and alcohol) in Varanasi but only in restaurants that are located more than 820 feet (250 meters) from a temple. Most restaurants in the old part of the city are “pure veg,” meaning that dairy and honey are the only animal products on their menus.

Q:Is it safe to swim in the Ganges in Varanasi?
A:

No, it’s not safe to swim in the Ganges in Varanasi, even if you’re a strong swimmer, as this segment of the river is heavily polluted. To swim in the Ganges, head up to one of the cities closer to the river’s source, such as Uttarkashi or Rishikesh.
