Our day will begin with delicious coffee to give us energy for the adventure that awaits! Then we will jump in the van and drive to the area of Xoxocotlan, where the Salgados family will welcome us to their silver jewelry workshop. For over three generations, the Salgados have elevated Oaxacan jewelry design to a national level. From Xoxo we will head further down the road to San Martin Tilcajete, where we will visit the only workshop in Oaxaca where women are in charge of crafting Alebrijes. They explain and demonstrate the process, enlightening us on what it means to be a woman in a predominately male-run creative field. In the same town, we will stop at “Almuu,” a traditional comedor set in a garden surrounded by plants. Sample a family style lunch. Our last stop of the day is just a few minutes away in the town of Ocotlan, where a maestro sombrerero awaits us. Here we will learn the craft of hat making and you’ll have the opportunity to find a sombrero that is just for you.

We will be meeting in Mexico City to travel west to the State of México which is an approximate of an hour and a half away. Thirty minutes before arrival to Villa del Carbon, we will begin to enjoy of the beautiful views that this small town offers as its located in a forest. Founded in 1713, developed slowly and home for indigenous Otomi people who now live close by their lake. We will walk around this magical town to see the main square and their markets which will let us sample the delicious local food. We then travel to the lake of Taxhimay which currently holds in it depth the town of San Luis de las Peras. We will learn why the town was flooded and how the indigenous people adapted to this situation through out the years. We will ride a boat over the lake to get close to the buildings that still stick out surface to then eat with the locals to support the families in the area.
