Take this tour, you won’t regret it
The Chacchoben Mayan Ruins excursion was one of the highlights of my trip! The ruins were beautiful, well preserved, and full of fascinating history. My family and I were able to climb up the ruins and get a first hand look at them. Our tour guide, Gabby was amazing! She was knowledgeable, engaging, and made the experience both fun and informative. If you’re visiting Costa Maya, I highly recommend this excursion!

Ozzy & Yoshi were a great driver & Maya guide. Yoshi explained all about the Chacchoben ruin, and we enjoyed our 4 types of tacos & swim in the picturesque Balacar Lagoon. Loved the small group size.

Worth it!
Fabulous. Tour guide, Elliott, was amazing, personable and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend. The Chaccohben site was worth the trip. The special treat was making tortillas and having lunch with the REAL women of Chacchoben in the small town nearby. My 87 yr old mother went and this was the highlight of the cruise for her.

Perfect Mix of History & Relaxation!
The One Day Tour to Chacchoben Mayan City and Bacalar Lagoon was an amazing experience. The ruins were fascinating, and our certified guide made the history come alive with great explanations.
Bacalar Lagoon was absolutely stunning—the water colors are unreal and it was the perfect place to relax after exploring the ruins.
Everything was well-organized and ran smoothly. Highly recommend this tour if you want a mix of culture and natural beauty in one day

Eliseo was an amazing tour guide. He was very knowledgeable about Chacchoben and Costa Maya. We had a lovely beach break and we were able to get some delicious fruit from a local stand. We were back at the port with plenty of time to spare. We would definitely use Toucan Tours again.

Be Prepared for a Long Bus Ride
The overall experience was good. Carlos, our guide, was excellent. The ruins were great to experience. The 75 minute bus ride each way wasn’t good. It was an old bus with AC that didn’t seem to work in the back half. There wasn’t any “guiding” during the ride for 70 minutes of it. The beach experience at the end was okay, lots of shops and restaurants but full of pushy sales people (which is normal on a lot of ports)

Reggie, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and did a great job giving info in both English and Spanish. Lot of info about the ruins and the Mayan culture, both ancient and modern. A stop for fresh pineapple from Alma was a great surprise!

When to visit

Since the ruins are mostly unexcavated, visitors should wear sneakers or hiking boots, not flip-flops.
Mosquitos may be abundant, especially during rainy season, so remember to bring insect repellent.
Keep your eyes open for deer, peccaries (piglike animals), armadillos, gray foxes, and spider and howler monkeys, which inhabit the surrounding jungle.
