Vajdahunyad Castle is a picturesque attraction nestled in Budapest's City Park (Városliget). Originally built in 1896 for Hungary's millennial festivities, the architecturally diverse complex includes the city's agricultural museum inside the palace. Wander the lovely grounds, or stop by museum exhibits on hunting, forestry, and wine.

Budapest is home to several bridges, and though the Elisabeth Bridge (Erzsébet Híd may not be the most famous, it's among the most important. Destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in the 1960s, today it's the city's most trafficked bridge, offers great city views if you walk across, and serves as the gateway to Buda's must-see Citadella.

The century-old Gellért Thermal Bath and Spa is one of Budapest’s largest and most luxurious spa complexes. Housed in a magnificent art nouveau building, it boasts a grand colonnaded indoor pool, multiple thermal baths, saunas, steam rooms, a rooftop wave pool, and a panoramic sun terrace.

Ranking as the largest synagogue in Europe—and the second-largest in the world—Dohány Street Synagogue is one of Budapest’s most striking monuments. Aptly nicknamed the “Great Synagogue,” it’s not only an architectural marvel but also an important part of Budapest’s Jewish history and heritage.

This turn-of-the-century, Secessionist style synagogue in the heart of Bustapest's Jewish Quarter is an active temple that remains central to the area's Orthodox community. Visit to marvel at the worship space, learn about Jewish culture, and add on a stop at one of the area's Kosher eateries to sample Jewish cuisine.

Budapest's Liberty Square (Szabadság Tér is among the most picturesque of the city's public spaces. Nestled in District V, the square is flanked by grand buildings like the United States Embassy and Hungarian National Bank headquarters. A stately Soviet War Memorial is the park's centerpiece, and the interactive fountain is a must-see.

The Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum is the oldest public museum in the country. It preserves national heritage through diverse art and history exhibits as well as a trove of original documents. The 1848 Hungarian Revolution began on the museum's steps, and the palatial institution today remains a testament to Hungary's past.

With its maze of cobblestone lanes and wealth of historic landmarks, Budapest’s Jewish Quarter (District VII) is one of the city’s liveliest areas. The district has a harrowing past, as the site of the Jewish Ghetto during the city’s Nazi occupation, and it’s dotted with monuments and memorials. But in recent years, it’s also undergone regeneration, emerging as one of Budapest’s coolest quarters, full of cozy cafés, gastropubs, kosher restaurants, and live music venues.

Visitors who want to explore Hungarian history’s darker side can head to Budapest's House of Terror Museum (Terror Háza Múzeum). Located in a building that was once used as the headquarters of the Arrow Cross Party and the secret police, the museum offers a look at life under fascist and Stalinist rule.

Castle Hill (Várhegy) is the medieval heart of Budapest and the centerpiece of the Buda neighborhood. Part of the Budapest UNESCO World Heritage site, the district is home to the city's big-hitter attractions, including the royal fortress of Buda Castle, Matthias Church, and the Fisherman's Bastion. Stroll through Old Town’s cobblestone streets and you’ll find a wealth of historical sites, as well as spectacular views of the the Danube River and adjacent Pest neighborhood.

Used as a government building for much of its 220-year-old history, Sándor Palace is one of the hilly Buda district’s most iconic landmarks. The neo-classical building was first commissioned for a family of Hungarian aristocrats—the Sándors—in the early 1800s. During World War II, Allied bombers came close to destroying it. But the palace was restored in 1989 and now houses the Office of the Hungarian President.

In a city full of bathhouses, Budapest’s medieval Rudas Thermal Baths (Rudas Gyógyfürdo are among the most popular. Established as early as the 16th century at the foot of Gellert Hill, the traditional Turkish bathhouse features a swimming pool, six therapy pools, a sauna, and a rooftop Jacuzzi, plus massages and other spa services.

The Moorish Revival Rumbach Street Synagogue was built in 1872, when District VII was a bustling Jewish quarter. Known for its Islamic detailing, domed interior, and colorful brickwork, this recently-restored space offers a window into 19th-century Jewish history. It's a fitting stop on a tour of the area's hip ruin bars and restaurants.

In the heart of Budapest, the elegant City Park (Városliget is the largest of the city's green spaces. This is the place for strolling beneath sycamores, picnicking, and even visiting a zoo. You can soak in the Széchenyi Thermal Bath, dine in the park's cafés, or pair a museum visit. However you spend your time, the park is a must-see.

It's tough to put a label on Gozsdu Courtyard (Gozsdu Udvar. This bohemian space in the bustling Jewish Quarter hosts events day and night, is celebrated for its weekend flea markets, and is home to several eateries and pubs. It's a prime destination to meet up with friends, sip a beer or a coffee, and indulge in Hungarian cuisine.

Cross Budapest's landmark Széchenyi Chain Bridge and you'll find yourself at Adam Clark Square (Clark Ádám Tér, named for the Scottish engineer that helped build the tunnel beneath Castle Hill. This spot is the gateway to the Castle District. Hop on the funicular here for a quick ride up the hillside—offering easy access to Buda Castle.

Running between the Chain Bridge and the Elisabeth Bridge on the Pest side of the Danube, the lengthy Danube Promenade is a picturesque destination for a stroll. Luxury hotels and historic buildings are plentiful here, and the views are unbeatable. Admire Buda Castle and the Citadella perched on Gellért Hill, just across the river.

The Hungarian Academy of Sciences is the oldest Hungarian scientific institution. Visitors can appreciate this riverfront neo-Renaissance building as a splendid example of 19th-century design. There’s a public art collection upstairs and nearby Széchenyi István tér (formerly Roosevelt Square offers great views of the Chain Bridge.

Budapest’s principal shopping street, Váci Street (Váci Utca) runs for almost a mile, right through the heart of Pest. Lined with striking 19th-century buildings, the Grand Boulevard is the place for window shopping and people watching, with a huge selection of designer boutiques, high-street brands, souvenir shops, and cafés.

Located steps from the Danube River in Budapest's opulent District V, the mid-19th-century Vigadó Concert Hall (Pesti Vigadó was restored after suffering damage in World War II, and today stands as a premier Hungarian music venue. The Vigadó—home to the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble—frequently hosts top-notch classical music concerts.

The Holy Trinity Column is a towering piece of history, standing in the heart of Budapest's castle district. A limestone structure, the building was erected in the 18th century to honor the end of the devastating plague, in commemoration of its victims. The Holy Trinity Column is Budapest's oldest Baroque statue and a prominent gathering point for tourists.

Located at the end of a bustling shopping area on Vaci Street, Vörösmarty Square (Vörösmarty ter is a vibrant public space surrounded by high-end shops, and known for its annual Christmas Market. Stop by for an ice cream at a local favorite, Gerbeaud Café, or hop on the metro inside the square and head for historic sights up Andrássy Avenue.

Opened in 1870, Buda Castle Funicular (Budavári Sikló) carries passengers from Clark Adam Square and Szechenyi Chain Bridge up 200 feet (61 meters) to Buda Castle. Europe's second funicular railway was destroyed in World War II and reopened in 1986. Ride on a clear day to enjoy superb views of the Danube River and Budapest's west side.

Nestled into a curve of the Danube River, about 30-miles (48-kilometers northwest of Budapest, Esztergom is a near-perfect day trip destination for Budapest visitors. Set on the Slovakian border, this former Hungarian capital's top draw is its basilica, which towers over the city from Castle Hill, and offers panoramic views from its dome.

An ancient town with a stunning castle complex sure to impress history buffs, always-charming Visegrád is a top draw for Budapest day-trippers. Located just north of the Hungarian capital on the Danube River, top attractions here include the 13th-century Upper Castle, the Salamon Tower and its Gothic fountain, and the medieval Citadel.

Deep in the rock beneath Buda Castle, this former hospital played a central role in both the Siege of Budapest and the Hungarian Uprising, before being repurposed as a nuclear bunker during the early Cold War. Today, the Hospital in the Rock functions as a museum, offering insight into the hidden history of Hungary’s capital.

Budapest is a city that radiates sophistication, and no area of the city illustrates this quite like Liszt Ferenc Tér. At 48 miles (77 kilometers) in length and seven miles (11 kilometers) at its widest point, Balaton is Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake and landlocked Hungary’s prime summer playground, with spectacular scenery and swim-friendly milky green waters. The lake is fringed by beach resorts, a national park, and wine-producing vineyards.

Housed within the Dohány Street Synagogue complex—Europe’s largest functioning synagogue—this museum spotlights Jewish traditions and the plight of the Jewish people in Hungary. Among the items on show are menorah, centuries-old Jewish gravestones, hand-engraved Torah scrolls, and rare manuscripts.
