If you’re looking for an authentic, unforgettable experience in Ubud, this private Balinese cooking class at Putu’s home is an absolute must.
From the very beginning, Putu went above and beyond—she and her husband personally picked us up from our hotel, making us feel welcomed right away. When we arrived at her family home, it felt like stepping into the heart of Balinese culture. Putu took the time to walk us through her home, explaining her family temple, traditions, and daily customs in a way that was both fascinating and deeply personal.
One of the highlights was touring her garden, where she grows many of the ingredients used in the class. It was incredible to see everything so fresh and organic—truly farm-to-table at its finest. We were even treated to a refreshing coconut drink, freshly harvested right from her own tree!
The cooking class itself was hands-on, fun, and incredibly informative. Putu guided us step by step as we prepared six authentic Balinese dishes, thoughtfully adjusting each recipe to match our spice tolerance. From chopping and slicing to learning traditional techniques, she made everything approachable and enjoyable.
After cooking, we sat down to enjoy the delicious meal we had created together—and it was absolutely amazing. Every dish was bursting with flavor, made even more special by the experience behind it.
Putu is truly one of the sweetest and most hospitable hosts you could ever meet. Her warmth, knowledge, and passion for sharing her culture made this experience far more than just a cooking class—it was a genuine cultural immersion.
Highly, highly recommend—this was easily one of the best experiences of our trip!

They picked us up at our hotel and drove us to their home and told us about the family history and temples. Then we cooked 4 dishes that were outstanding. We brought our own wine. After 3 hours they returned us to our hotel. The kitchen is outdoors under a covering in the beautiful garden. Many of the ingredients come from the garden and chickens they have. We have done many cooking classes and this one ranks at the top. Thank you Putu.

One of the best experiences we have had as travellers over many decades. This is for anyone who wants a great cooking class AND wants to learn about Balinese culture, religion and daily life.
We were picked up, on time, by Putu and her husband Pasta (yes - Pasta) from our accommodation. The drive was interesting, travelling from Ubud through a rural landscape to their small village (150 close-knit families). Pasta is a calm and skilled driver.
When we arrived Putu showed us all the buildings that make up her familiy's area. These include ceremonial places. She described the function of each and the various Hindu Gods represented in their temple.
Then to the cooking: Putu took us through several techniques and helped us to prepare a multi-course, delicious meal, which we ate at the end of the session. (Made, her assistant was on hand to help if needed). As we grated, grilled, chopped, mixed and boiled, Putu happily answered all of our questions about Bali, the village and anything else we were interested in.
Cooking in a kitchen, with a roof, but mainly open to tbe sides was wonderful, especially when the rain pounded on the roof! The gardens - a farm really - were all around us and it is amazing how many types of fruit, vegetables and roots (and rice of course) that Putu's family grow. Putu showed us around the grounds before we started cooking)
After eating Putu and Pasta drove us back to Ubud.
Anyone coming to within reach of Putu's class should sign up - it is both a culinary and cultural experience!
Many thanks to Putu! We learned so much.
By the way: Putu also has an AirBNB in the village. It is called Rumah Pondok Kembar (maybe Pondak, not Pondak - my photo has a leaf over the word!)

Thank you so much for sharing this thoughtful and detailed review. We are truly delighted to hear that your time with Putu and her family was one of the most memorable experiences of your many years of travel.
It is wonderful to know that you enjoyed not only the cooking class but also the opportunity to learn about Balinese culture, religion, and village life. Putu takes great pride in welcoming guests into her family compound, sharing the traditions behind the temples, and guiding guests through the preparation of a delicious Balinese meal using ingredients from her garden.
We are also glad you enjoyed the scenic drive with Putu and Pasta, the tour of their family grounds, and the unique experience of cooking in their open air kitchen surrounded by the farm. Experiences like these truly capture the spirit of connecting with local people and cultures.
Thank you again for your kind words and for recommending Putu’s experience so warmly. We hope to have the pleasure of hosting you again on another Traveling Spoon experience during your future travels.

What a wonderful time learning about Balinese culture and cooking from Putu in her home. The food was amazing and learning from her and her family even better!!!
Belle_C, Feb 2026
Putu and her family were so welcoming and gave us an amazing experience at her home showing us how a Balinese traditional house looks like and the customs. Her cooking class was so enjoyable and educational, we learned so much about the different ingredients and how to prepare the 5 dishes we made for dinner. We got to grate coconut by hand, mince our ingredients on the volcanic rock pestle and mortar with good arm strength, steamed our rice the proper way over a wood fired stove, cooked and turned our own chicken satay sticks over the hot coals and lastly ate the most delicious food! There is a lot of food to eat so you must come hungry! This is so worth it compared to the other group cooking classes around, a much more thorough and personal experience.

Three friends and I signed up for this class and received an amazing experience. Putu and her family were gracious and she did an excellent job of explaining the temples typical of a Balinese household. We also enjoyed her farm tour and using ingredients from her farm. She does an excellent job of explaining and instructing. Come hungry and curious! And our meal was delicious!! I would make it part of the beginning of your trip as you will use the information on the rest of your trip!
Response from Host, Nov 2025
Thank you for this wonderful review! We are delighted to hear that you and your friends had such a meaningful and delicious experience with Putu and her family. Her generosity, clear instruction, and deep knowledge of Balinese culture truly make her classes something special, and it is lovely to know that you enjoyed everything from the family temples to the farm tour to cooking with freshly harvested ingredients.
Your tip to come hungry and curious is spot on, and we love your suggestion to join her experience at the start of a trip. It is exactly the kind of insight that helps future travelers get even more out of their time in Bali.
We are so grateful you chose to spend part of your journey with Traveling Spoon, and we hope we can welcome you again on another memorable food adventure!

Putu and her team rock! Great hospitality! Delicious and informative cooking class. We highly recommend her to you. She shares her delicious cooking experience, her family garden and compound, and stories about Bali culture and life. Such fresh ingredients! Such great flavours, all ending with a fabulous meal and recipe book to take home!

We have done a few cooking classes all over the world and this was by far the best. Putu was so friendly and welcomed us into her home, giving us a tour where she pointed out all the different produce her family was growing on their farm. After a refreshing drink and trying a variety of fruit and snacks for the first time we got stuck into cooking. Putu was great at explaining each stage of the preparation and cooking process, giving us many tips along the way. The food was absolutely delicious and Putu gave us good guidance of some substitute ingredients we might use for the one or so ingredients we might have difficulty finding when we get home to recreate the dishes. Though almost all the ingredients we used we know we will have no trouble locating back home in Australia .

Thank you so much for your wonderful review. We’re thrilled to hear that your cooking class with Putu was the best you’ve experienced. It sounds like you had such a special time learning about Balinese ingredients, tasting local fruits, and cooking authentic dishes in her beautiful home. Putu’s warmth and passion for sharing her culture truly shine through, and we’re so glad you enjoyed every moment of it. We hope the recipes bring back great memories when you recreate them back home in Australia, and we’d love to welcome you again on another Traveling Spoon experience in the future.

This was an amazing experience for us. Putu and her husband, Pasta, were very accommodating with our pickup and drop-off. Upon arrival, Putu showed us around her home and explained the cultural significance of each section, including the temple and the meaning behind every statue. She then showed us her garden, where she grows a variety of herbs, spices, fruits, and vegetables. Notably, all the ingredients we used for our cooking class came directly from her garden.
When we were ready to cook, we were greeted by her cousin, Made, who was there to help us monitor the cooking while Putu taught. We made five dishes in total: Nasi Sela (rice and sweet potato), Tempe Manis (sweet tempe), Perkedel Jagung (corn fritters), Satay Ayam (chicken satay with peanut sauce), and Urab (Balinese salad). We had a lot of fun during the process and learned so much about Balinese cuisine. At the end, we were proud to eat our creations, and they were all delicious. We even had some food left over, and Putu kindly provided takeout boxes for us to bring home.
Overall, we really enjoyed this experience and loved the food. Putu, Made, and Pasta were all incredibly welcoming and exemplified great Balinese hospitality. We highly recommend this to anyone; it was one of our favorite experiences in Bali.

This private cooking class was perfect and smooth! First of all we were greeted at the pick up and presented to the traditional family house. After visiting the garden where all the produce comes from Mrs Putu harvested fresh mangosteen for us to try! She revealed us the secrets of Balinese cooking - all vegan as we requested. And under her professional guidance and help we prepared 5 - let me say delicious - dishes ! We also increased the spice level up to acceptable standards for us and ate food that was more delicious than what we had eaten in restaurants!
We will remember not to leave out the kaffir lime leave - the star of the show !
Now we can retry these recipes back home and enjoy the delicious tempeh and tofu based dishes!
It was a wonderful experience that we enjoyed a lot and we would like to send you again a big Terima kasih for opening your home and teaching us the secrets or the delicious Balinese cuisine!
If you would still be doubting - do not hesitate - just quickiy book!

An authentic home cooking class by Putu who welcomed us into her home. She explained the various ingredients, we cooked 5 dishes, with the best part, sitting down to a Balinese feast! It was fun.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience! My wife and I truly appreciated our host’s warmth and hospitality. Not only did we enjoy a delicious meal, but we also learned so much about authentic Balinese food, its traditions, and preparation. The flavors went far beyond our expectations — rich, balanced, and unforgettable. As people who regularly enjoy Indonesian cuisine, we were amazed at how uniquely satisfying and flavorful this meal was. A truly memorable culinary experience!

Exceptional good cooking class, fresh ingredients and very tasty food to enjoy afterwards and you will be told interesting facts about life and living in an Indonesian family.
You get a lot for what you pay!!
One should know that the cooking class takes place about 40 min away from Ubud-Center. Just to keep in mind if you have plans after the cooking…

Cooking with Putu was definitely a trip highlight. Fascinating to see Putu’s varied & abundant garden of fruits & vegetables & a great learning experience to cook traditional Balinese food with her guidance.
With enough leftovers to take away for breakfast we were very happy with our delicious meal.
Thank you Putu for sharing your knowledge & home with us.
We are looking forward to trying the recipes back home!
David_L, Aug 2025
Putu and her friend gave us the most wonderful experience.
We cooked with her ingredients from her garden, in her garden and in her garden kitchen - a magical experience which both David and I totally enjoyed.
In three hours we cooked five dishes from scratch with lessons on spices, how to combine chilli, cook from raw to fabulous, tasting a beautiful 5 course meal in the end.
Putu was patient, encouraging, funny and had good command of english language.
She invited us into her home, showed us a true Balinese rural lifestyle and took time with both of our different abilities.
David and I totally recommend her and her cooking school classes to anybody that is seeking out an authentic, heart felt Balaness cooking experience.
We wish you well Putu and hope to come back one day and cook with you again

A private cooking experience in Putu's home... not a group /classroom situation. Her experience was working for an Australian couple for many years as their private cook. Unique and wonderful...

Amazing experience! Putu has a beautiful home and explained everything so well. The food was incredible. The kitchen is outdoor and well equipped. We went to the night booking and it was wonderful. Well lit after the sun went down. The ingredients were all laid out and ready for us. She explained all of the elements and let us adjust our spice level. Pick up was on time and very well organized. Make sure you have whatsapp downloaded because she uses this to communicate. We had so much good leftover and she sent us home with to go boxes. Highly recommend

We were a family of 9 aged 6-80 and had a fantastic experience with Putu and her family. We all learnt a lot about Balinese life and cooked some of the most delicious food we have had in Bali. Putu took care to make sure everyone was involved in the cooking and the children were really engaged through the whole process. We would absolutely recommend this to anyone visiting Ubud and wanting to see Bali outside of the main tourist areas.

Wow, what an unforgettable experience! Without a doubt, this has been the highlight of our trip so far. Puta was like a magician in the kitchen, not only an incredible cook but also a brilliant teacher. She guided us through every step with patience and warmth, and by the end, we had the most delicious meal we've had in Bali. It honestly put the restaurant meals to shame, and that's saying a lot.
She welcomed us so generously into her home, showing us around her beautiful temples and garden, where she grows most of the ingredients we used. It was such a personal, authentic experience.
If you're considering this cooking class, just do it. You absolutely won’t regret it!

My friend and I had an absolutely fantastic lunch experience at this traditional Balinese cooking class. Putu and her sister were exceptional hosts and wonderful teachers. We learned so much as she opened up her home to us, and then expertly guided us through making five delicious Balinese dishes.
The convenience of the pick-up and drop-off service was a great bonus, and we really appreciated their flexibility. It felt truly special to be invited into Putu's home, where she generously showed us her garden and where all the fresh, vibrant ingredients for our meal came from. This personal touch made the experience even more memorable.
Putu kindly shared her recipes with us afterwards, and I'm so excited to try and recreate these amazing dishes when I get back home. I highly recommend this cooking class to anyone looking for an authentic and enriching culinary experience near Ubud!

We were picked up and taken to the home of Putu, where we were totally involved in cooking fabulous Indonesian food. Most of the food was grown on the small holding and was fresh and delicious. We used traditional methods- steaming rice over wood burning stove, grinding ingredients by hand to make satay, and lots of chopping on wood blocks with small cleavers. Putu was informative and gave lots of background information. Everything was beautifully clean and well organised. We all loved it. And the food was delicious!
Lauren_S, Apr 2025
Putu and her family opened their home to us, provided safe transportation to and from our villa, and were so kind and welcoming. Putu helped explain the layout of a traditional Balinese home, showed us her home and her home temple, and helped us learn about the special ceremonies happening the week we were in Bali. Putu, her cousin, and her husband were all so kind throughout the whole experience. Getting to learn to cook 5 Balinese dishes all from ingredients grown from Putu’s family garden was a highlight of our time in Bali. HIGHLY recommend doing this if you are in Ubud! Some of the most delicious food we’ve had in Bali, and a lovely way to experience Balinese culture from local people :).
Elena_T, Apr 2025
Unique wonderful experience of traditional Balinese cuisine, culture and family life in the beautiful lush countryside of rural Bali. Putu was fabulous host, cooking techniques were unique, ingredients superb and food absolutely delicious

I had a fun evening cooking food and sharing stories. The host is so nice and explained everything we were doing. She opened up her home and showed me around. You can tell she cares deeply with everything she does in life. Everything tasted delicious. There was so much food made, so she packed me a plate to take home. Thank you!

Putu and her family were welcoming and more than accommodating for our hectic schedule for the day. We made a delicious Balinese lunch and learned a little Balinese while there!
Tom_Y, Oct 2024
My wife and I did the Private Cooking Class in a Traditional Family Home. The day far exceeded our expectations and was a highlight of our travels in Asia. Seeing the home of Putu and Pasta gave us a great appreciation for how many people live in Bali. Most of the food we prepared was grown or raised on their property. Putu spent considerable time showing us their private temple, where they grow / raise the food, and living quarters. The food preparation area was spacious and well laid out. We prepared 4 Indonesian dishes and had a wonderful feast afterwards. Putu was an excellent instructor and we look forward to receiving her recipes.
