Things to do in  Gili Trawangan

Naughty but nice

The biggest of the three Gili Islands that huddle off northwestern Lombok, Gili Trawangan is the archipelago’s epicenter. Almost universally known as Gili T, the island is notorious for its buzzing party scene (although drugs, including the ubiquitous magic mushrooms, carry heavy penalties in Indonesia), but it’s far from a one-trick pony. Things to do in Gili Trawangan run from snorkeling, scuba diving, and free diving to surfing lessons, yoga sessions, cooking classes, sunset cruises, horseback riding, and even electric skateboarding.

When to visit

Although the Gilis have a rainy season (which generally peaks December through March), they are drier than Bali or mainland Lombok. So, the best time to visit Gili Trawangan depends on your travel style. For 24-hour party people, the December–January and July–August peaks will hit the spot. Divers will find less crowded sites (and clear water, too) between April and June. Wind and waves can sometimes lead to canceled fast boats; be flexible when planning travel in June–July or December–January.

Getting around

There is no powered road transport on any of the Gilis, and the horses that pull cidomo carts are often mistreated. As Gili Trawangan is the largest island, renting a bicycle makes sense. (Travel tip: Attach a ribbon to the handle so you can pick your ride out from hundreds of identical bikes.) During daylight hours, regular public speedboats connect to Gili Air, Gili Meno, and mainland Lombok’s Bangsal Port, though you can also charter boats for island-hopping adventures or snorkeling trips.

Traveler tips

Gili Trawangan sunsets can be spectacular, with views across to Bali’s towering Mount Agung volcano on a good day. Window Bar lets you experience it in laid-back style, with cozy beanbags and a drinks menu that includes imported wines and upscale cocktails. Or, you can hike up to the viewpoint atop the hill that dominates the island’s south side and watch the sun sink into the ocean free of charge.
