We recently took this tour to explore the southwest side of Puerto Rico, and overall it was a convenient way to see several places in one day, especially with hotel pick-up and drop-off in San Juan.
Stopping at Playa Buyé first was a great way to start the day—the beach was beautiful and set our expectations high for the day. Our second stop was Boquerón, which was really nice to walk around. I actually wish we had spent more time there because it felt like a place worth lingering.
One stop that didn’t live up to expectations was the salt flats. I don’t quite understand why they are still included in the tour since they appear abandoned and aren’t as striking as they used to be 20 years ago. My suggestion would be to replace this stop with the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse (Faro), which I think would add much more value.
Visiting the town of Cabo Rojo was one of the highlights. You could tell our guide enjoyed this stop the most, and it was nice to hear his historical knowledge here. Unfortunately, the other stops didn’t include much background or information, which left some gaps in the experience.
The final stop was a restaurant in Joyuda. The view from the restaurant was beautiful, but I felt a little misled about this part of the tour. Instead of exploring Joyuda itself, the only option was to eat at the restaurant or skip the stop entirely and head back. After dining, we left directly without even driving around the area, which was disappointing. It would have been better if the description had made clear that Joyuda itself wasn’t a stop—just the restaurant.
As for the guide, he was polite but not overly friendly. He talked a lot, but it seemed like he was more comfortable with larger groups. Since it was just our family of six that day, he kept mentioning the small group size, and when we tried to engage in conversation, he didn’t seem very interested.
My biggest concern was the drive back. While we understand the reality of bumpy Puerto Rican roads, the speeding felt excessive and honestly unsafe. We found ourselves holding on and just waiting for the ride to be over, which put a damper on the end of the day.
Overall, if you’re short on time, this tour is a convenient way to see the southwest in a single day. But if I were to do it again, I think I’d skip the tour and instead plan a couple of days in the area to explore at my own pace.

Roberto was an excellent tour guide. He answered questions, gave us some history and pointed things out along the way. He does love to talk. We went to the beach, the salinas (a bit disappointing), two towns and a restaurant (food was good). I would recommend this is you want to see the West side at a laid back pace.

Our host, Roberto, was excellent. Trip was well planned. Our host had exceptional knowledge on PR history and on sites visited. Food stops exceeded expectations on taste and cost. If you want a well planned trip and exposure to the West, then book this trip!

The guide was very informative and concerned with everyone's comfort. It was nice to get away from San Juan and see other parts of the island. Would tour with them again.
Note: Buye Beach was way too crowded to enjoy (for a tourist), and it wasn't even on the weekend. Omit that stop, and dinner from the itinerary (or go earlier to dinner since the place was nice), and more time can be spent sightseeing on the way back while it's still daylight out, instead of driving back in darkness the whole way (since it is a full day of touring) . I enjoyed everything else though.

Cabo Rojo was very beautiful ! Robert was informative. There were some places we weren’t able to see, such as getting up close to the lighthouse, because it was closed due to now being unsafe. The beach was nice. The town of Boriquen was cute, had lots of picture worthy spots. The place Robert took us for dinner was great with great views.

Robert took us on a walking tour of several of the beautiful small villages.
Learned so much about history of Puerto Rico . Very enjoyable tour and we highly recommend it.

Good overview Ponce,Boquerone,Cobo rojo to Mayaguez. A lot of history from Roberto about historical figures important to PR. A long day but good. Beach time nice.

I rarely leave reviews but feel compelled to fully explain the experience to others so they can decide if they want to book. Nice, knowledgeable guy but clueless.
1) we spent more time in a gas station than 1st town. You barely get out of the van. Horrible planning/itinerary. 1st town was ice cream shop, church and statue back in van. Not sure if it was worth a stop but if you dont walk around and he spends what little time you have in the ice cream shop and satue...who knows. Next stop salt flats where you may or may not be able to walk to the actual pretty area. Otherwise walk around an abandoned building hearing all about salt and back in the van.
We said we wanted to see the beach but not spend 2 hours and he didn't go to the beach at all!! 2nd town would have been only to sample a few food kiosks but we asked for free time since we didn't go to the beach. It was almost impossible to break free from him. Next stop to a restaurant with a beautiful view but nothing else to do.
I have been on many long tours and never experienced anything like this. It should be great little towns or pretty spots to stretch your legs and take photos. He doesnt even think about photo opportunities and drives past.
2) another reviewer complained about the talking and its OK to have a little quiet time. I dismissed because I have had chatty tour guides....he never, never stopped talking. 12+ hours with no longer than 30 seconds without speaking. He's so focused on talking he would just sit in the parked van talking.
3) a car rental would have been 1000% better and cheaper. Roads were better than NY and people drove fine not aggressive as I read. You could drive stop enjoy yourself and go from pretty place to place instead of being held captive.
It's a small island and it took us 12.5 hours to transverse with stops that barely let you leave the van.
Again nice guy but horrible experience.

Tour Guide was on time and very knowledgeable about the area, be prepared, it is a full day experience but truly worth it … the restaurant at the end of trip offers fresh seafood and the beach experience was the best. Amazing experience! Roberto was our guide and he went above and beyond to make sure we had a great Time. It was my 17 year old son’s favorite thing that we did on the trip and mine as well. Great adventure with Roberto. This is an all day tour so be prepared to be warned out at the end. This tour takes you to the west side of the island where you wouldn't normal visit on your own. visiting the place where sea salt is constructed was very interesting. we even got a chance to bath our hands in the salted water. Another highlight was eating at the restaurant with the locals. This tour is well worth your time and money.

I have recently made two important decisions. One is good and the other is amazingly excellent. The 1st good one was to vist PuertoRico. The 2nd but excellent decision was not to get stuck in San Juan, but to win an in-depth, professionaland heartfelt fascinating tour to West side story :) of the island. I would love to tell but I wouldn't want to make spoiler. Be surprised and find out for yourself. The trip gives a lot of knowledge with the help of a friendly and intelligent local guide

Sadly we did not complete the trip. We were the last for a couples to be picked up in a van. One had to climb over the rear wheel to be contorted into the last row, which did not have enough legroom for one to sit with their knees straight ahead, there was air conditioning, but it worked intermittently so we were contorted, compressed and warm. And reviewing the tact information of the tour, it was not a clear that we would be spending a total of six hours in these very difficult circumstances. There is no way we could have completed the trip so that after the first stop an hour and a half out of the San Juan. We informed the driver we were unable to complete the trip, he contacted his manager and they took us to a nearby Hilton hotel in Ponce where we hired our own driver to go back to San Juan. Because we had journeyed 1/4 of the way I requested a 75% return of our deposit and in two separate emails we were informed that we were not going to receive anything because we elected to leave the tour .

We are sorry to hear that your experience was not what you expected. We could not accommodate a refund as you decided of your own volition to not continue with the tour and our cancelation policy is 24hrs in advance for the refund.
In regards to the concerns you have noted for us in your review. I feel I must address them here, publicly as you did voice them in a public forum. If you would have wanted to continue, the passengers seat next to the driver is always available for people who not feel comfortable in the back, you just need to ask, and we are more than sure that if you had wanted to, we could have talked to the group and moved you. The van fits 14 people, we understand it is not too comfortable for the full 14, therefor we only service a maximum of 12, and still the tour that day had only 8. The a/c was replaced with a new one around 3 months ago, and it is in great working order, but surely it takes a bit of time to get to the back, nonetheless it reaches the back after 10minutes, we have tested it ourselves with a full van, also, if it would have consistently happened throughout the whole trip, which it did not, we would've provided a refund for the experience. I also would like to apologize that it is not clear that the first stop, Faro Los Morrillos, which is clearly posted in Viator, mentions that it is 2 hours and 30 minutes away, at which point you get out of the van, and then the next time you get in the van you stay in it for 5 minutes to get back down at the salt pools, and 20minutes to make it to the Boqueron, and finally the last time to get back to San Juan, which would be another 2 hours and 30 minutes, for a total of 5 hours and 30 minutes, with enough time to stretch your legs, as we do make strategic stops to let people stretch their legs for comfortability. We know this is a long ride, and we do not hide it.
Not only do we review your reason for the refund, and for the situation, we also have to review our tour guides feedback. And getting both sides of the story, we understood that you omitted to let us know you had conditions, which we state clearly that we do not recommend it for people with conditions. You opted directly to not continue the tour, instead of asking for a solution, which when I tried to have our tour guide provide to you, he was even scared of asking to have you go back in the van to take you to a safe place for you to go back to San Juan because you were so adamant about not getting back in the perfectly working van. Then you proceed to review us without even having the courtesy to completely detail the full interaction in order to mislead others as you are mad that you did not get your money back for a tour you did not research well, did not inform of your condition to the operators, and did not allow the operators to solve the situation for you, which you could have avoided by simply asking to be sat in front.

It’s a trip totally worth the money. I love the route and town that are not too commercially developed and so I can see it’s original culture. My tour guide has encouraging me along the way to climb to the cave to the the most beautiful view. It makes the difficult walk totally worth it.

This was a most wonderful experience with Richardo. To be able to get outside of major touristy areas and seeing more of the island. From doing a little hike and having the ground open up and watching the waves crash below. To seeing the abandoned salt flats. Stopping at a road side family owned stand for what we would call icee's with fresh fruit puree, amazing. Going through the little fishing town and eating dinner locally on the water, best grouper I have ever had!! This was a fantastic day adventure with memories that will last forever with Richardo as our great guide.

I had such an amazing time on this tour. I think it's a must-do if you want to explore outside of the San Juan area and get in a full-day adventure. The guide was prompt and communicated pick-up and drop-off times clearly. He also explained the history of the west side while we did sightseeing. It was just another couple and me so the guide tailored the tour to match what the small group wanted to do. Next time I go to PR I know I'll def want to spend more time on the west side.

This was a great tour! Had to change the date due to inclement weather, but it was easy to switch. It ended up being a private, solo tour because some people cancelled. Had a great time exploring a lesser visited part of Puerto Rico. Roberto, my driver and guide, was super friendly. He took me to a couple off the path spots since it was just me. Would highly recommend! Great, fulfilling day. Saw a lot of interesting places.
