It was an excellent tour, very confortable ride on the big bus because it is a long trip. We got to see a few whales, no big splashes but those happen by chance. Our tour was excellent, very professional and very knowledgeable of the area and the history. She also did a great job of switching fro French to English. Very well done

Exceptional experience! The easiest way to have the experience from Quebec City. We were able to relax during the ride there and back. The narrative one the boat was both energizing and informative. Merci beaucoup!

What To Expect

Escape from the hustle of Quebec City and enjoy an exciting adventure on the water. This full-day whale-watching excursion begins with a pickup from several accommodations in Quebec City to Fontaine de Tourny to meet the guide and the rest of the tour group. Hop aboard a deluxe motorcoach and travel along the Saint Lawrence River to the town of Baie-Sainte-Catherine, widely considered to be the main entrance to the most beautiful whale-watching site in the world.

Upon arrival, board either the tri-level AML Grand Fleuve observation boat or a much smaller, speedy zodiac for your whale watching adventure (option chosen at checkout). The AML Grand Fleuve is known as the best observation boat in Canada. With glassed-in panoramic decks, several terraces and an observation platform, the boat provides exceptional visibility. The upper deck is covered for protection from the sun and inclement weather. There’s even a bistro and gift shop. The Zodiac, on the other hand, provides a much closer experience with the whales and the various marine species of the St. Lawrence River. It’s smaller, speedier—a more intimate nature excursion.

Both vessels depart from the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River in the heart of the Saguenay-Saint Lawrence Marine Park and include an educational and entertaining narrative on this history and nature of this eastern Canadian region.

At the end of the cruise, the voyage ends with a return trip to Quebec City and a drop-off.

A Whale of a Disappointment

Ramona_H, Aug 2026
We were very disappointed in the organization of the entire cruise experience. We stood on the asphalt for an hour because the boat was late for pick up. It had made a stop before ours so the passengers from the first stop had laid claim to every seat on the boat. As a result, we stood the entire cruise after having stood in wait prior to boarding. We did see a few whales and enjoyed that experience, however we were so exhausted and frustrated to enjoy it as much as we would have hoped. Finally, the staff in the boarding area were unpleasant, curt and communicated very poorly, when they shared information at all. There is much room for improvement!

Response from Host, Sep 2026

Hello, thank you for sharing your feedback. We're sorry to hear that parts of the experience did not meet your expectations. We understand your frustration regarding the wait before boarding, the seating availability and the communication received on site. We're pleased that you were able to enjoy the whale sightings and appreciate you taking the time to share your comments with us. — the Croisières AML team ⚓

Zodiac Tour mid-August

Katherine_K, Aug 2026
We booked the Zodiac experience. Arrive 30 min early for bus pick up, bus is on time. We did stop mid way on drive for bathroom and food purchase at grocery store or Subway. Just one bathroom/toilet at the grocery store so we were a very long line! If you can already have your lunch repacked to bring with you that is more efficient. If you bring reusable water bottle there is a fill station inside building at boat departure. Process at boat dock is not very clear. You will be given a lanyard/boat type ID when you get off the bus. First get in line to use bathroom. Eat lunch quickly. Get in line (if Zodiac) for rain bibs and rain coat. You need to bring you waiver paper for this line - guide should have given to you to fill out when you got on the bus. No one tells you where to go or what to do after that. Put the bibs and coat on and go over to the boat dock. They will first ask for larger groups, five, then four, then three. They are seating families first so they are together. Groups of two or singles are then seated. Shore temp was 64 F and sunny, it was cooler on the water. I was comfortable in hiking pants, and a long sleeve shirt under the rain gear. I definitely would have been cold without the rain gear. If it had been cloudy I would have wanted a winter hat and gloves. We saw four types of whales, lots of sightings as well as seals. Boat guide was great. Get rain gear off as quick as possible so you can get back in line for the bathroom before the return ride. No bathroom stop on the way back. The bus did not have WiFi and did not have charging.

Very well organised. Also we were very lucky with the weather and we got to see seals, fin whales and humpbacks (not jumping out of the water though!! That would have been amazing!!)

An amazing experience!

Kamila_M, Aug 2026
If you have nearly a full day to spend on an excursion and feel like splurging, this is an amazing excursion for you. Took off at about 9am. The tour group gathered by the fountain (be there 30min~ before) in front of the parliament building and the guides help organize who is doing what and how, give you your waiver to sign, and then you get onto your busses. I was booked for the zodiac boat! My guide was Eve, very kind and organized. No issues with English speaking as well. Some reviews said you don't really get food other than option for snacks at the pier so I brought a drink, snack, and sandwich for the 3hr bus ride to the site BUT, the bus stopped 1/2 way through at a plaza with a Subway, drug store, and supermarket with plenty of quick eats and hot food so you are set! But bring some snacks just in case. The bus had an outlet so you can charge your devices by the way! I went 1st weekend of August, about 70F out and about 50F? on the boat. For ZODIAC, which I did, I wore full length comfy leggings, waterproof Nike sneakers, a full sleeve undershirt and a kind of warm hoodie. I also brought a beanie and sunglasses. You can only really bring your phone/camera with you on the boat. So that's how I went. It is a very windy ride and can get very chilly so bring a beanie for your head/ears. We ended up getting rained on during the ride back in so the waterproof jacket and overalls were amazing. You have pockets in them by the way. I was solo so I was at a bit of a disadvantage for getting good seating on the boat when they were boarding people but not huge deal. As for the excursion, Cedric our boat captain was wonderful. He was super knowledgeable and kind. We got to see multiple Humpback whales, Minke whales, and we saw a group of Beluga whales. There were some seals here and there too. Be quick with your camera for whale spottings! Absolutely gorgeous sites and you get so close to the whales who are massive and majestic. The still frames for pictures I attached don't do it justice! Even if I had bad luck and didn't see much, it would still be a fun time. We then had a 3hr ride back in more rain, no stops, and the bus dropped us off by the Chateau in the old town about 7:30pm.

Response from Host, Aug 2026

Hello Kamila, thank you for your wonderful and detailed review! We're thrilled that you enjoyed the entire experience, from the transportation and organization to the incredible whale sightings. Unforgettable day worth the journey x

Paul_K, Aug 2026
So first things first this is 3.5 hours away from Quebec City in a coach. However it was totally worth it. We did the zodiac tour the sun was shining we saw pods of Belugas, seals, porpoise and the stars of the show 3 beautiful humpbacks 1 of which played within 10ft of our boat for 15 mins. It was truly incredible, our guide was as excited as we all were, an amazing experience. On the way back we raced around the stunning fjords which are magnificent. I have been whale watching before off Australia but to get this close to such a playful beautiful humpback on such a sunny day was perfect. Even if we hadn’t seeing all the other creatures and racing around such a beautiful area on the amazing zodiac would have been a great day. The coach journey while long was through beautiful scenery, so didn’t feel like 3.5 hours. My advice brave the zodiac, a much, much, much better experience than the slow large enclosed boat.

Response from Host, Aug 2026

Hello, Thank you for your wonderful review. We're thrilled that your Zodiac excursion was such a memorable experience and that you had the opportunity to observe belugas, seals, porpoises and humpback whales up close. Whale watching

Mark_L, Aug 2026
Our Whale watching experience was pleasant and enjoyable. The bus ride there was very convenient, ( car parking was across the road and up a steep hill) the bus staff was friendly & very helpful. On our (big) boat ride was great, we saw over 30 whales. I recommend standing on the steps going up to the 2nd deck, for a clear view. But as time goes on people move around and eventually spots along the deck railing open up. Oh yes our 26c on land felt like 18c on the river. Dress warm!

Response from Host, Aug 2026

Hello Mark, thank you for sharing your experience! If not in a group, you will get the worst seats

Marco_T, Jul 2026
An unfortunate mix of unlucky circumstances and some bad planning. The pickup point changed and they did not warn me in advance, so I was forced to be at the back of the bus where it was loud and couldn't hear the guide explanations. When boarding the boat I was first in line but they prioritized larger groups, fair enough for a while but letting some solo travellers in every now snd then would have felt more fair. I boarded last on the 2nd smaller boat on the worst seats. And to add insult to injury the first boat where I was denied entry was much luckier with the sightings so I felt a bit unlucky/cheated. The boat driving and explanations were good, just a shame that some misfortune + unfair planning on their part combined to make it a mediocre experience for me

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Hello, thank you for sharing your experience. We’re sorry to hear that certain aspects of the excursion did not meet your expectations. We understand your disappointment regarding the transportation arrangements, boarding experience, and seating allocation. Amazing!

Amanda_H, Jul 2026
This was a long bus ride, with a tiny cheese shop stop that was wonderful for snacks. If you need meals, you’ll need to pack a lunch and dinner. No stops on the way back. Once we arrived at the boat, the tour was absolutely amazing and we collectively saw over 9 whales! 3 different species and one baby. We even saw puffins flying around! We couldn’t have asked for more beautiful weather. The beginning of July was the perfect time to go on the trip!

A must do

Niklas_J, Jun 2026
All together a great tour and a must if you visit Quebec City. The reality versus the information on Viator wasn’t 100% aligned, but still had a good day. Bring your on food if you are doing the zoodiak. The boat has a cafe. And both whales and seals were seen.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Bonjour, thank you for your feedback! We’re glad you had a great overall experience and enjoyed seeing both whales and seals during your tour. We understand that some details differed from the information on Viator, and we appreciate you highlighting this. Your tips are also very helpful for future visitors. We hope to welcome you again on board! The Croisières AML Team

Ok, but not as satisfying

Brian_W, Jun 2026
It is more whale spotting, yes we saw whales ( at a distance). Tourboat was also packed full of unchaperoned teenagers that pretty much dud as they liked.

Loved it!

Ravi_M, Oct 2025
Our guide was Ms Patricia and our driver was Paul. Ms Patricia was warm, professional and knowledgeable. She went above and beyond for us. We chose the AML boat (larger boat) and have no regrets. Given the weather was cold and windy it was really nice to be warm and still enjoy the seals and beluga sightings. It was truly one of a kind experience. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Hello, We’re so happy to know your family had such a memorable experience. Our larger boats are indeed perfect for enjoying the sights in comfort, especially on cooler, windy days. Not worth the money

Franca_M, Oct 2025
This tour was no worth the money. The whales weee so far away that you could hardly see them! The bus washroom was broken and they expected us to go before we heading back into town. I was really disappointed and would not recommend this tour to anyone.

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Hello, We’re sorry your experience didn’t meet your expectations. Whale watching on the St. Lawrence is an extraordinary opportunity to see these magnificent animals in their natural habitat, and our captains and naturalists do everything possible to offer the best sightings while ensuring their protection. We also apologize for the bus washroom inconvenience and appreciate your feedback, which helps us maintain a smooth and comfortable experience for all our guests. We hope you’ll give us another opportunity to provide a truly memorable cruise and to discover the beauty and wildlife of the St. Lawrence. - The Croisières AML Team

Its Whale spotting from afar and not Whale watching.

SHITHBIN_A, Sep 2025
The Whale watching part by AML Croisiere was disappointing. The description "Whale watching and photo of whale advertised for this package is misleading. It should be Whale spotting. I only saw the fins of the whales for about 5-10 sec from afar 3 times. I expected more, at least being able to see a decent quarter of a whale is okay.

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We’re sorry to hear that your whale-watching cruise didn’t fully meet your expectations, and we truly appreciate your honest feedback. While sightings of these incredible creatures can’t be guaranteed since they live freely in their natural habitat, it makes every outing unique. Your comments about communication and transparency regarding what to expect are very valuable, and we’ll use them to continue improving the way we prepare guests for their adventure. We’d love the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and provide you with a smoother, more comfortable, and truly memorable cruise experience. Warm regards, The Croisières AML Team

Joan_S, Sep 2025
Even if the day is hot, it is windy and chilly on the boat. Most of the whales you see are Fin Whales.

We hope to see you again on board! — The Croisières AML Team

Great whale watching.

Patricia_H, Sep 2025
Great whale watch tour. We saw 2 blue whales!! Spectacular. And a fin whale. Equally awesome. Along with some minke, belugas, harbor seals. Our guide was great and very informative.

Fun without the worry

Ruth_P, Sep 2025
It was great that we didn’t have to drive. We got a narration of what we could see between Quebec and the whale watching event. The tour guide was friendly and helpful along with the bus driver. The staff at the excursion were truly knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.

Very long excursion

DianaJN_K, Sep 2025
It's a very long coach ride from Quebec city. The countryside and houses were very pretty though. We were unfortunate that we only saw a couple of mink whales.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Hello, Thank you for sharing your experience. The Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park is truly one of the best places in the world for whale watching, and sightings can vary since these are wild animals. Even when only a few mink whales are spotted, the cruise offers a unique opportunity to observe them up close in their natural habitat, which is very different from viewing them from the shore. We are glad you enjoyed the scenic drive and hope to welcome you again for another chance to experience the richness of the St. Lawrence River and its wildlife. — The Croisières AML Team

Excellent tour

Rhona_G, Sep 2025
The staff were very knowledgeable, pleasant and friendly. The boat and bus were very clean. We saw belugas and minke whales.

Take a change of clothes!

Sheila_T, Aug 2025
It was a great experience! We took the zodiac... and got soaking wet!... part of the fun with this experience. However, although they do provide a waterproof jacket and pants, your clothes will still get soaked - wish that had been stated in description. Best to wear a waterproof hat and gloves too as gets cold, rubber boots and a change of clothes. Felt cold on way back to home port with damp clothes. Apart from that issue, it was a great time!

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Thank you for your feedback! We are delighted that you enjoyed the excitement of the zodiac experience, where getting a little wet is all part of the adventure. To make the most of the cruise, we always suggest dressing warmly and in waterproof gear, as highlighted during our courtesy call before your departure. Hats, gloves, and a change of clothes help ensure maximum comfort while enjoying the incredible sights of whales and other marine life. We look forward to welcoming you again for another unforgettable whale watching adventure on the river! – The Croisières AML Team

Prepare to get soaking wet if you select Zodiac option

FukLun_K, Aug 2025
It indeed has a very high chance of seeing the whales; in fact, we even saw a pair of whales swimming. But if you pick the "Zodiac Cruise" like I did, don't entirely rely on the jacket and pants provided, be prepared that there will be a chance that you will get REALLY wet. I mean, soaking wet, as if you had just taken a shower. If you're planning to bring in your camera like I did. Your backpack will obviously be soaking wet. Get a fully waterproof one. But it's totally worth it. I had a fantastic photo shoot with the whales, despite some of them being out of focus since they move quickly and the boat is quite shaky due to the waves.

Good Experience

Patty_R, Aug 2025
Bus trip up 3.5 hours and was comfortable. Stop at a local cheese store to pick up snacks or lunch was pricey but seemed normal for Québec. Rained that morning so meeting up people were drenched and cold, so a number of people had to buy a sweatshirt at cheese store, 77.00 each. Guide on bus was good, talked all the way up. Maybe spoke French more than English. On a zodiac so it was closer to see whales. Whales were small with no big tail flipping out if the water, but did see about 6 smoothly rolling in the water. Lots of seals, two different groups. The seals blended in with rocks but we were able to get close. Also a porpoise along the edge of a mountain eating. The captain of zodiac did not speak English, so didn't really get to learn anything. Fortunately however the first zodiac was full so a smaller group was on the second one which I think made the trip better. Be prepared for Captain to speed up in areas, put hood on and cover face or sea spray will cover you.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Thank you for sharing your detailed experience! We’re glad to hear that the zodiac trip provided an exciting opportunity to observe whales, seals, and a porpoise up close. Observing these animals in their natural habitat is always a unique experience, and it sounds like you had some wonderful wildlife moments. Your tips about dressing warmly and protecting against sea spray are excellent reminders for all guests, especially on zodiac excursions. A Nice Break from the City Crowds!

Ed_H, Aug 2025
Enjoyable ride and scenic falls! Gaby, our guide, was a wealth of history and local information. She led our group professionally and we appreciated her concern for our safety during the ride. We rode on normal bikes. We had no big problems, but my bike had a water bottle holder on the frame that was broken and the office could not repair it. Maybe 10 percent of the ride was in city conditions (lights, crossings, lotsa walkers), but most of the was on flat paved bike trails separated from the roads, so very safe conditions. Even the city portions had marked bike lanes that drivers seemed to respect. About a six mile ride each way. We felt the trip was time well invested for us.
