What To Expect
Your Rottnest Island ferry departs from either Perth or Fremantle, depending on option selected when booking. If leaving from Perth, you’ll cruise down the Swan River through the city to reach Fremantle, from where it’s about a 25-minute ride across the ocean to "Rotto," as it’s known to locals.
When you arrive, you are free to explore the island—and its 63 beaches and 20 bays—however you wish. There are plenty of spots to get wet with a swim, snorkel, stand-up paddleboard or surf, or just relax on the sand and watch yachts bobbing in the water. The most popular activity for visitors is renting a bike on the island to cruise leisurely along the scenic roads, where no cars are allowed. If you’re interested in history, check out sites like Lomas Cottage, Rottnest Island Museum, Pilot Boathouse or the Salt Store and Exhibition Centre. And don’t forget to keep your eyes open for wildlife, particularly the island’s native quokkas. (All entrance fees, activities, rentals, food and drinks are at your own expense.)
At the end of your full day on the island, head back to Fremantle or Perth on the return ferry.

Picked up the tickets the day before as the tour operator was very busy on the morning of the tour. Long queue to get on. Limited outside seating on the ferry and limited upstairs seating inside. Staff very friendly on the ferry. Great views along the river and commentary was informative. Island lovely to walk around plenty to see and do for the long day.

The ferry was great, really efficient and all the signage was very straight forward. I tend to get seasick but was fine on this ferry!

There's a lot to do so wear a good pair of trainers. And a hat as there isn't a lot of shade. It is worth it though

Great day out especially if blue sky day. Would have been good to know to book bikes in advance as long Q when we got there. The round trip hop on hop off bus was a good alternative. The Quokkas are amusing

Well worth every penny. A great trip. Beautiful island. Lots of great facilities and places to eat. The playground is a great place for kids to let off steam.
We found the convenience store to have a great array of supplies.
Loved the bakery which was very popular.

The boat trip from Perth was fine. We wished we had gone from Fremantle because of speed restrictions on boats between the two ports. We were on the Fremantle side of Perth.
Having said that the boat was comfortable and the crew fine. We loved Rottnest. There was plenty to see and do and, of course, the Quokkas were cute.

Perth to Rottnest is 1hr 45m journey, the commentary down the swan River is really interesting. The outside seats on our ferry all faced backwards which I don't like. Inside was lovely and cool, some seats have tables.

Good trip. What you see is what you get. cannot complain. loved the island. one of the most beautiful places ive been

Just ask questions as to where everything is, not a lot of signs or help, do your reseach first, and it will be a lot less stressfull!
Barbara_W, Feb 2025
Departed from Perth, easy location to find for pickup/drop off, informative commentary down the Swan River, air conditioned interior with drinks & snacks available on board. Rotto did not disappoint, exceptionally beautiful, will be back & probably stay overnight as lots to see and explore. Fantastic pub grub and various food options available on Rotto as the locals call it.

The Quokkas are everywhere, first we were chasing them then around 3pm they were coming up to everyone
Jane_J, Nov 2024
Well organised and efficient. The island is lovely and well worth the trip. Cycle round it if you are able, it's a great way to see the Island.
Devki_R, Nov 2024
The day was glorious and the ride smooth. Unfortunately, the speakers/acoustics up top are so bad, none of the Swan River commentary was understandable. That was a bummer. But, on time there and back!
Bernadette_M, Nov 2024
Ferry was on time both to and from Rottnest Isl. Be sure to be at pier at least 1/2 hour before ferry departure time; boat is usually very full. Staff were helpful and friendly.
Fitri_W, Oct 2024
Picked this service as the departure is closer to the hotel. The price is reasonable and they practice safety throughout the trip. On the way back we had a few sightings of humpback whales & one of the crew did the lookout. We also were followed by a dolphin until barrack jetty.
Harold_C, Oct 2024
A fantastic experience enjoyed every minute, with the bonus of seeing whales and dolphins topping of a fantastic day
Royce_T, Sep 2024
We managed to see the quakka. They were very cute. The scenery and weather was nice. A good experience.
Justin_F, Sep 2024
Great commentary. Staff were great. Ferry was punctual. Was cold on the boat. Was inside. Was warmer outside. Comfortable seats. Took the ferry from Perth so saw the Swan river features.

Simple round trip from Perth to Rottnest Island via Fremantle.
I find the price a bit excessive, given the number of passengers and very limited number of seats on the deck. Couldn’t really observe the scenery along the Swan River to and from Fremantle.
The price and experience on the journey don’t inspire a second trip.

We went over to Rottnest on a very , very choppy day, ferry was a bit like a roller coaster ride but we got there safely.
Thoroughly enjoyed the scenic cruise from Perth , commentary was excellent.
Ferry was comfortable & on return journey the seas had settled somewhat & we enjoyed a coffee & a snack.
Would do this again if in the west & just hope for better weather!
Maxwell_C, Jul 2024
It is easy to redeem the round trip ticket from the jetty, and the ferry is clean, overall is a smooth ride.
Commentary was given when sailing on the Swan River, but the noise from other passengers make it hard to hear.
The ferry from Perth will also stop at Fremantle to allow more passengers getting on, which also make the whole ride a bit long. It maybe better to take a train to Fremantle and get on the boat to save time.
Having said that, in winter time, we can enjoy the sunset view on the ride back to Perth, which was a nice surprise.
JULIE_S, May 2024
Easy & convenient way to get to Rottnest with beautiful views along the way. We booked from Perth and the jetty was easy walking distance from our hotel. Seats were comfortable, there are food & drinks available for purchase, and a pod of dolphins played in our wake as we departed! We needed to change our return to Fremantle on the day and were able to do so easily by email with the operator.

Today, the 26th of April, 2024. There was some issue of my roundtrip ticket. And Jennifer was able to resolve the situation. I got my return tickets and end up relaxing and taking photos. It was pretty cruise on the way Rottnest Island and back to Perth

The ferry trip that was amazing, the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Rottnest was amazing, weather was perfect so I think the beaches, just relaxing having a swim and walking along the beaches.
The lighthouse was also fantastic.
It was a great trip from start to finish.

The trip over was great, the crew were very nice and great personality plus very informative. The island itself was amazing and just like a little hidden gem. The quokka's are so cute and adorable. Would highly recommend this trip to anyone

A wonderful experience and a must do when in WA! Viator team is wonderful to partner with when on holidays.
Caitlyn_M, Jan 2024
It’s a long trip so I would recommend sitting upstairs near the open section for fresh air if you get a little bit boat sick. The guy who speaks throughout the trip is fantastic and if you’re lucky you can get seats on his bus tour which was the highlight of our day.
Jerome_H, Dec 2023
The round-trip ferry ride to Rottnest went really well. It was a nice boat, the staff were all very nice. It was great that there was an onboard bar with various drinks and munchies. All in all it was really good.
Jaimie_B, Dec 2023
Nice ride. We had a good time on Rottnest & saw several quokkas. It would have been fun to spend the night if we’d had more time.
