Our guide, Alex, was thoughtful, well prepared and able to answer questions with ease. The food was fun and well-portioned for our group. A wonderful way to learn more about NYC!

Itinerary

Today, the Lower East Side is crammed with bars, clubs, and trendy restaurants. But if you know where to look, you can find very edible remnants of its intriguing past. The neighborhood was once home to many of the city’s new ethnic groups, and the old-school food of the area still reflects this.

On this fun, small-group (or private) tour, sample some of the best snacks and learn a lot about the history of the Lower East Side. Learn about the history of the neighborhood from your local guide.

From Chinese to Jews to Italians, many different ethnic groups have called the Lower East Side hom,e and they’ve all left their mark. Also learn about the erstwhile African burial ground, where Africans, both enslaved and free, were put to rest through most of the 18th century.

Finally, step into chaotic Chinatown, where delicious dumplings compete for your taste buds.

The tour finishes back on the Lower East Side, where you can continue exploring on your own. It’s advisable to wear or bring clothing that is weather-appropriate depending on the season, as you’ll be outside for at least 3 hours.

We were the only two who showed up the morning of our tour so we got a private experience filled with history and tasty treats. 10/10 recommend Greg!

Good walking history tour

Elizabeth_S, Oct 2025
The tour guide was super knowledgeable and friendly. I will say this was more of a walking tour about immigration history of NYC (very interesting!) with some food along the way, vs a tour centered around food. There was only one stop we actually went inside a restaurant and sat down for a minute, the rest was all outdoors, walking. So be prepared! This being said I wasn’t disappointed, it was just different than other food tours I’ve been on that are focused on.

Astrid was a fantastic guide and really made the tour! Very engaging, personable, and knowledgable. I really enjoyed learning about the area and how immigration has shaped the city over the years. The tour covers a lot of ground, but at a good pace. All of the food was delicious, my personal favorites were the dumplings and knish. I highly recommend this tour.

Great Tour, Great Food, Great Guide

Lynette_L, Oct 2024
This is a very worthwhile tour. The Guide, Cullen, was a fountain of knowledge about the history of the area and immigration. We went through so many areas of interest with different cultures from African-American's who came with the slave trade, the Chinese, the Italians, Eastern European Jews and finally the Puerto Ricans. The food was fantastic and plentiful (don't eat breakfast!). Covered a lot of ground with some eating stops so you could sit down. Cullen was very considerate and concious of everyone's needs. We had some great discussions.

The best

Kelly_B, Jun 2024
We had an amazing tour with Tavia! She was personable, accommodating, informative, attentive....the complete package. We are still craving the dumplings, pizza, and knish! And, we spent last night rehashing the different facts we remembered about the history of the tenements that she shared with us. Thank you, Tavia, we feel so fortunate to have had you as our guide!

Overall it was a very interesting tour

Geraldine_K, Apr 2024
I enjoyed the tour but found it a little rushed. Overall it was very good regarding the information given however the interval between the food sampling was way too short and rushed

Response from Host, May 2024

Hello Gerladine, Thank you so much for bringing the issue with the timing and pace on this tour to our attention. We are sorry to hear that you felt rushed during the tour, especially when sampling food! Unfortunately, with the number of places to cover in a short span of time, sometimes the leader must move things along a little faster than normal. We apologise if this negatively impacted your trip to New York. We are working with the local team to investigate if the itinerary needs to be changed to prevent this from happening on future tours. With thanks,

Great food. Great time!

Andrew_B, Apr 2024
Had a great time getting to know the city and eating some great food. We had our 7 and 9 year old daughters with us. It turned out the food we got was very kid appropriate. Potstickers, pizza, empanada, etc. they actually ate most of the food we tried, which was a bonus!

Great guide! Great tour!

Beth_V, Apr 2024
Eric did an amazing job explaining the history of New York, immigration, and the growth of the metropolis! He was interesting, fun, and very personable! The food was delicious, however, I do feel it should have included at least two more tastings.
