Overview

We went early in the morning, and it was rainy and foggy. Not the fault of our guide of course, but made the climbing to monastery slippery. Our guide was quick to pivot to something less treacherous and gave us a personal tour of the Byzantine church in Kalabaka. It was very lovely and moving

The views are amazing! Be sure you wear proper shoes for climbing there are many steps and inclines.

Our guide was lovely, full of knowledge, and it was lovely to watch him help one of the older ladies in our group so she didn't miss out on some beautiful view points. So lovely to have the air conditioning between some very hot stair climbs!

Really lovely tour. This local company ran it for me although I was the only person who booked for this day. Plenty of interesting information and photo opportunities. I was picked up from my hotel (Guest house Oikia) and Penny lead the tour, she was very knowledgeable. Very good value if I’d been in a small group but excellent value for a solo tour. Let the guide know if you have any mobility issues - only one monastery I visited had no steps and some have more than others.

The monasteries are absolutely beautiful, the terrain and natural beauty is wonderful. Stathis originally was to be our guide, but due to circumstances and travel delays on my part, I wasn’t able to meet the original date. Stathis was very welcoming and appreciative of me being there, and went out of his way to make sure that I was taken care of, and set me up with another tour guide on the day that I was able to come. This guide, Jim, was extremely informative and enthusiastic about telling his lifelong experiences living and growing up in the area. He also had an extensive knowledge of botany and geology, which was really interesting to hear. The tour of four hours was just long enough to let you see everything and motivate you to come back when you have more time, not too short and not too long. The town of kalambaka itself is very nice and is the type of place you would want to spend three or four days at least there. Nice restaurants with delicious Greek food, and coffee and pastry shops, all of course, reasonably priced. I would’ve liked to have stayed longer so I could walk the trails between all of the mountain monasteries. From what I saw, they were well paved with bricks and tiles. I loved hearing the Monastery bells in the distance at different times during the day, as I am a bell ringer myself. The spiritual aspect of the monasteries is wonderful, although anyone would enjoy it whether you are religious or not, because of the natural beauty and architectural beauty, as well as the abundance of history that you learn about. All in all it was a great experience, and the only downside was that I didn’t have more time there this time.

Trotz schlechten Wetters eine super interessant Tour. Wir waren die einzigen Gäste und hatten daher eine Privattour😀 unser Guide hat uns viel zur Geschichte erzählt und an den besten Orten zum Fotografieren angehalten. Ich kann die Tour nur empfehlen! Fahrer und Guide waren super nett.

Sehr gute Führung und Erläuterungen zu den Klöstern und deren Geschichte. Viel gelernt und auch Freude daran gehabt. Lohnt sich auf jeden Fall mehr, als auf Eigene Faust alles zu erkunden.
