I had a really great time with Mayra. The location was easy to find, comfortable, and the instructions were easy to follow. I appreciated the history on the style and examples provided of the traditional otomi embroidery. Mayra also showed me examples of how to incorporate the style into other types of embroidery projects. I can't wait to use this in more crafts moving forward!

This class was so much fun! She had all of the preparations ready for you and made you feel so welcomed! She was able to show more advanced techniques and still explain it on a basic level. I would highly recommend taking this class for a relaxing time of learning!

    Great Intro Class for Embroidery

    Sammetria_G, Dec 2025
This is a great activity for solo travelers. Not only was the host informative, but she was patient and enthusiastic about sharing her craft. We were given supplies to complete our projects, and directions to nearby shops to buy more supplies if needed. What a great way to support local artists!

    I was unable to attend...

    Cecelia_L, Sep 2025
I was unable to attend the workshop because I could not find it! I was given 2 addresses, I went to both places, and no one was in either location. As a matter of fact, the buildings were both locked up. I am heartbroken that I was not able to learn this embroidery method. I would like a refund. I also strongly recommend that directions include a photo of the location. Mérida is a confusing city, even for the Uber and taxi drivers I employed. 😔

    Response from Host, Sep 2025

Hi Cecelia!! We’re very sorry you couldn’t join the workshop! We understand how disappointing that must have been. We did send the exact location via WhatsApp, and it’s also listed as Casa Texoxe in the description, which works on Google Maps and Uber. We’re always available on Viator messages as well any time!

So good I'm taking my sister next time!

    Kelli_W, Jun 2025
It was a wonderful experience and a lot of fun. The teacher was friendly, helpful, and overall it was very informative. I will be going back with my sister later in the month! It's a very quiet relaxing time, and also gives you perspective on the kind of work that goes in to the textiles you see and they buy on your trip.

    Creative and sooo much fun!

Oh you will love this class! Seeing the embroidery all over Mexico is great inspiration and the class is so much fun. The instructor uses a translation app on her phone to translate what she is saying so don’t be worried if you do not speak Spanish. Also she is wonderful and very helpful as students are learning. I highly recommend!!

    Wonderful workshop with Mayra

    Beth_L, Apr 2025
Mayra is a wonderful teacher and master artisan in Merida, Mexico. She is a former University teacher of 15 years in illustration, embroidery and photography. The class was at her studio - a one on one workshop to study emboidery, including the traditional Maya Yucatecan embroidery. It is a rich cultural tradition here. Today I learnt a number of different stitches, and most importantly free form stitching to create the illusion of dimension.

    Suggest that you make it...

Suggest that you make it clear that final location details will come in WhatsApp. We had trouble finding the location because google maps was incorrect and sent us astray. Also let people know that kits are available for sale. Instructor was fantastic, lovely patient and talented. Just the logistics need improvement.
