Venagua Rainforest is absolutely beautiful! It's not really a wildlife experience, but the jungle is gorgeous. We did see tucans in a tree while in the aerial tram. Our guide, Evita, was very intelligent, and pointed out animals we could not otherwise see. Especially if you are on a cruise, I highly recommend Venagua Rainforest. And Relax Day Tours gave us a wonderful experience after the rainforest in the Tortuguero Canals where we saw sloths and kaymens.

Fun day exploring the Rainforest and canal. Our guide Steve was great. Flexible and wanted to make sure we had a great time.
We got to see many animals, more up close on the canal tour, Chris? Was able to pull our boat up close to a sloth, cayman, and monkeys.
Stopped just in time at a restaurant on the beach for lunch during a downpour. Had great food and a great time.
Response from Host, Feb 2025
We're so glad you had a fantastic time exploring the rainforest and canals! Thanks for the kind words about our guides, Steve and Chris. We appreciate you highlighting their flexibility and dedication to ensuring a memorable experience. Best regards from Puerto Limon!

Amazing experience. Hats off to Manuel who was more than a driver. He was like an encyclopedia of info about the tour and the town we were in. He also taught us about the types of sloths. The tour was more enjoyable with him. He also speaks many languages and has a good energy that makes up your day with good jokes. Jordi (I hope that's the correct spelling), the boat rider, was also good showing us many animals like sloths, birds, lizards, crocodiles, who are normally camouflaged in their habitat, so only a professional like him could see them. The rainforest experience was also very good. I learned many things about the jungle and the habitants.
Response from Host, Feb 2025
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're thrilled you had such an amazing experience. We'll be sure to pass along your compliments to Manuel and Jordi – they'll be delighted to hear them. We appreciate you highlighting their expertise and enthusiasm, as they truly strive to make each tour special. We hope to see you again soon!

It’s a wonderful tour of the Costa Rica rainforest. The admission to the rainforest was not included in our visit but we were informed of this beforehand. Our tour was small only 6 of us. Our guide Steve was very friendly and he made sure that he was there for us. If we wanted to do something after the main parts of the tour were completed he would take us elsewhere. The six of us decided on lunch at a local restaurant serving local cuisine. We toured the rainforest with a qualified rainforest guide. We saw lots of wildlife. Part of the tour was through a brackish river/canal also with a qualified captain. It was just the same six of our group. We got to see amazing wildlife including a beautiful sloth very close up. I would highly recommend this tour. Small groups are so much more fun than the large buses. Shout out to our great guide Steve. He was knowledgeable about Costa Rica and incredibly friendly and funny. He had a hug for all of us at the end of the tour. He also made sure he kept us as dry as possible when the rain started. He was truly amazing.

We're so glad you enjoyed your Veragua Rainforest and Tortuguero Canals tour! Thanks for the wonderful review and the shout-out to Steve. Steve is a fantastic guide. We appreciate you highlighting the wildlife sightings and the local lunch – it sounds like a memorable day!

Our tour guide was great! Very accommodating and welcoming to my family especially my son. He made us feel like family. The only reason this doesn’t get 5 stars or the only thing that would have made this better is to include a local stop for a local snack instead of a typical Walmart. The store sold basically the same things as the United States.
Response from Host, Jan 2025
Thank you so much for your positive review! We're glad you felt like family with our guide and appreciate your feedback about the snack stop. Actually, the itinerary description states that we will stop at a local supermarket at the end of the tour, this is of course optional, if someone is not interested it can of course be omitted and instead go to a local restaurant or shop if time permits. The supermarket offers fair prices, and while it is true that there is a lot of North American influence in this store, there are many products that are Costa Rican. We'll definitely take this into consideration as we look for ways to enhance the tour with more authentic local experiences. Regards from Puerto Limon.

It was awesome seeing everything in their natural habitat. We saw 2 sloths, lots of different frogs that were beautiful as well as snakes & butterflies in the rainforest! Only gave it a 4 because of the long drive but it is what it is. I say the drive was worth it but be aware.
Response from Host, Dec 2024
Thank you for your review! We're so glad you enjoyed seeing the rainforest wildlife, including the sloths, frogs, snakes, and butterflies. We appreciate your feedback about the drive and understand it can be lengthy. It is not so far in distance, but the road is gravel and not in the best condition, so you have to go slowly, and the trip feels long. We're happy you felt it was worth the trip!

Our hopes for our visit of wonderful Costa Rica were far exceeded. A fabulous one day visit hosted by Ernesto, our guide. Lovely man, asked all 6 of us sharing the tour what we wanted from the day and the more than achieved all our wishes. We started with quite a long drive some over dirt roads to take us to the Veragua Rain Forest. We past many country homes and small holdings, stopping many times for photo opportunities. Our very good driver even spotted a Sloth comfortably perched on a post near to an agricultural building. We stopped and achieved some wonderful photos. On arrival at the Veragua rain forest we were temporarily handed over to biologist Eric to show us an amazing amount of wild life and answer all our question. We saw another sloth at close range. Beautiful butterflys, snakes, tarantulas, lizards and wonderful scenery via a high wire gondola up in the trees. For those nervous of heights don’t worry you can sit and view well. It is very stable and safe feeling. We also enjoyed a lovely walk with Eric through the forest to a lovely waterfall. Afterwards were handed back over to our cheerful and informative mini bus team led by Ernesto for another fun journey to the water ways for our boat ride. Along the Tortuguero canals we were able o see lovely birds; some Caymans, Lizards ; Howler Monkeys and even another Sloth. Ernesto the returned us to the ship stopping off before to show us local shops and we all went into a lovely Cocoa sweet shop to buy some very nice local produce. The day was so good, my wife and I know we will have to come back to Costa Rica. The best day of a long holiday.
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Thank you for your fantastic review of the Veragua Rainforest and Tortuguero Canals Shore Excursion! We're thrilled to hear that your expectations for Costa Rica were far exceeded. It sounds like Ernesto, your guide, did an amazing job of making sure you had a memorable day.
We're happy to know you enjoyed the variety of experiences packed into the tour. The drive through the countryside with its photo opportunities and local wildlife sightings like the sloth must have been a great introduction to Costa Rica. It's also great to hear that Eric, the biologist at Veragua Rainforest, was knowledgeable and helped you see so many amazing animals and plants up close. The aerial tram ride and walk to the waterfall sound like fantastic ways to immerse yourself in the rainforest.
The boat tour on the Tortuguero Canals with sightings of birds, caimans, lizards, howler monkeys, and even another sloth, truly showcases the rich biodiversity of this area. We're glad Ernesto added an extra stop at the local cocoa shop to give you a taste of some delicious Costa Rican treats.
It's wonderful that this tour was the highlight of your entire vacation! We hope you'll consider Costa Rica again for a future trip where you can explore more in depth. Pura vida!
Sincerely, the Relax Day Tours Team.

This is simply a taste or beginner’s guide to this part of the world. If you have that expectation, then it will meet expectations. It’s about a 5 km dirt road drive once you leave the paved street to get there. The fee for our approximate three hour tour was US$75; that’s over and above what you might pay for any transportation or tour to get there but that was disclosed ahead of time. No lines.
Wear bug spray & if you are especially prone to mosquito bites (as I am), here’s a tip you won’t find in any medical books: Take a B12 shot within a week of going. I did both those and got no bites!
There was so much diversity in biosphere that our guide, Paula, shared with us. She was so passionate, cheerful and genuinely loved what she was doing!
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Thank you for your positive review! We're glad you enjoyed your Veragua tour and that your guide, Paula, showed her passion and enthusiasm. Like you say, this tour covers a section of the Costa Rican Caribbean and was designed to be suitable for cruise ship visitors like you. There's definitely so much more to see in our country than what fits into a cruise ship's limited itinerary. We hope you will be able to return and explore more of Costa Rica's beauty. Thanks again and best wishes from Puerto Limon.

We had a great time on the Veragua Rainforest & Tortuguero Canals Shore Excursion, it was easy to find Esteban when we got off the cruise ship, he went above and beyond for us and made the excursion unforgettable. Throughout the drive with him, he pointed out several animals and facts about Costa Rica, we really enjoyed the sky ride across the rainforest, on the boat tour of the canals we got to see several animals, Esteban also took us to check out a few cool spots on the drive. Highly recommend. Check out the picture of our one-year-old son with him, he also really enjoyed the tour!
Response from Host, Feb 2024
Sounds like you had an amazing time on the Veragua Rainforest & Tortuguero Canals tour! We're thrilled to hear it. Thank you for mentioning Esteban's excellent service and knowledge - it means a lot to us. We love seeing families enjoying our tours, and especially the photo of your one-year-old son! Best regards from Puerto Limon!

So glad we went with this tour and not the one offered by the cruise ship! 4 of is in a minivan, first ones there and in the rainforest, personal guide there. Only 4 of us on the canal boat with the best guide zipping around while others chugged along. We saw so much more than others with the effort given to us. Felt special all day! Saw and heard monkeys, saw sloths, so many birds. The rainforest and displays were wonderful and explained by our guide. Great job!
Response from Host, Feb 2024
Thank you for your review, we are glad to see that you had a good experience and enjoyed your tour! Best regards.

Met on arrival in port by our guide Laurie and driver Eric and given an excellent with friendly and informed commentary and extras that added to the experience / we were just two couples with a private van

We appreciate your kind words about Larry and Eric, they truly gave it their best effort to make your experience as memorable as possible. Thank you for choosing us! Best wishes from Puerto Limon
Adam_J, Nov 2023
Great excursion! We were able to be one of the first off the ship, and only had one other couple with us. This meant we beat the huge crowds to the rainforest. Our tour guide, Steven, was knowledgeable, friendly, and spoke good English. The canal we saw monkeys, sloths, and various species of birds. Our guide then took us to great local restaurant on the beach. Highly recommend!
Response from Host, Nov 2023
Thank you so much for this nice review! We are happy to see you enjoyed your
tour, Steven always does his best to be knowledgeable, funny and provide a great
time. Best regards from Puerto Limon!

First of all, our private driver, Steven, was excellent! He was a great guide and really worked at his English. He became a true friend. We loved the rainforest and the boat ride. He even took us to the beach to see the surf. The whole trip was wonderful!

The Veraguas rain forest was superb. The lift though the forest and the guide were both excellent. The tortugas canal was rather a waste of time. Maybe you could offer a trip with only the Veraguas part.
Response from Host, Mar 2023
We are sorry to hear that you did not like the tour through the Tortuguero canals, sometimes there are many animals to see, sometimes not so much, as it is open nature. Of course we have a satisfaction guarantee, if you were not satisfied with the Tortuguero Canals part of the tour, you can contact us, and we will refund you the amount of the boat tour. Best regards from Puerto Limon.

Book with relax day tours.
We booked to see Tortuguero-canals and Cahuita National Park. We had a super nice guide Steven, who bring us every where, and had nice comments about his beautiful country and he'd wife Sandra. He brought use to the exceptional beach where we have such a nice lunch. We never ever had a tour we be able to compare with the service from Relax day tours. Service and punctuality in there mails. 👌💯% Service. Thanks again for the great experience.

This is a fascinating tour for learning about flora and fauna around the Limon area. Veragua is a bit pricey - $155 with tax for two people, but they do have a nice butterfly area and reptile area, and the walking tour is pleasant. Be forewarned - it isn’t difficult, but there are a lot of stairs for those with mobility issues. We also struggled a bit with our guide (provided by Veragua) whose English was broken at times. I recommend Veragua but would not rate it 5 stars. It’s good, not great.
Tortuguero Canals is a boat ride on a small river, but it is teaming with wildlife - sloths, monkeys, cayman, and many types of birds. My sense is that you will always see something there. Do note that this area is not remote - there are boats and homes on one side of the river, but it doesn’t appear to inhibit the wildlife.
Relax Tours we found to be outstanding. They are waiting for you as soon as you leave the port with a sign. It appears that there are days that they use a bus, depending on the number of guests. On our tour, we were the only two and were in a pickup truck. The roads can be rough.
Our tour guide, Rupert, was excellent. Ask for him. He was a local so knowledgeable about the area, his country, and the fauna and flora. He knew where to look and was very insightful. We found our day with him fascinating. Rupert gets 5 stars.
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Thank you very much for your review, Rupert is an excellent guide, we are very happy to see you
enjoyed the tour. Greetings from Puerto Limon, Costa Rica!

This was the first time I used Viator while doing a cruise. Our guide, Steven, was excellent. We went to the rain forest and did a river ride as well. Would definitely do this again. Half the price of cruise ship!!

The Tortuguero Csnals was mh favorite part of the trip. As you can see by the pictures, our guide Juan Carlos got up close and personal with a sloth. It was fantastic. Juan Carlos was a fabulous tour guide. He told us so many interesting facts about Panama, the canal and the rainforest. He spoke very good English.
Jaun Carlos met us at the port with a sign with our name on it. We felt very comfortable about going with him. Our private tour had 12 people compared to the cruise excursion of 35-40 people.
We even had time to do a little shopping before he took us back to the port. My husband has trouble walking long distances, so Juan Carlos took us right up to the dock!
I can't say enough good things about this trip. It was really spectacular.
Response from Host, Dec 2022
Thank you for your review, it's glad to read that you enjoyed the time with Juan Carlos. Best regards.

I'm so glad we booked this excursion. It was intimate (only 4 tourists and 2 guides) and very informative. We traveled to the rain forest in a 6 passenger van which easily navigated the gravel roads. Our tour guide went on the rain forest tour with us. We were short on time, but our guides managed to get in a quick canal tour so we could see the monkeys and sloths. Once again, our canal tour was cozy and intimate. We very much enjoyed our time with the guides, thank you!
Response from Host, Nov 2022
Thank you very much for this excellent review, it is a great honor for us to read these lines, it fills us with pride that our services have been of your total satisfaction. Warm regards from Puerto Limón, the Relax Day Tours team.

We booked this the night before our cruise ship arrived in port. The reply and instructions came to my email pretty fast. Our guide met us and we were the only 2 with him in the air conditioned.vehicle. The road to tha rainforest was quite bumpy-glad we weren’t in a bus! The rainforest was easy to walk with wood and concrete paths. Our guide was very informative. The canal was a great experience seeing sloths, birds, iguanas, and the guide was very explanattive. He also had us sample local fruit. Then the guide and driver took us on a city tour. We went to a local empanada shop and ate. Our guide was great! He offered to take us anywhere we wanted to go. I would definitely recommend this tour!
Response from Host, Apr 2022
Thank you very much for your excellent and informative review, we are very pleased that you liked our tour, best regards from Puerto Limón!

We enjoyed our trip. However we encountered a flat tire and the tour company did not have the proper equipment to change the tire. They had to walk to find someone who had the equipment. Safety should be the most important thing for a tour operator and I feel like they really dropped the ball on this.
Response from Host, Mar 2022
Hi Laura, thank you for your feedback. Indeed, unfortunately we had a flat tire during the tour. The vehicle does actually carry all the tools and safety equipment, but it took the staff longer than desirable to fix the problem, partly due to the bad road conditions. We sincerely apologize and understand that you may have felt nervous for a moment. We have taken steps to ensure that unexpected technical problems like this are resolved much more quickly and safely.
We are glad to see that, overall, you enjoyed the tour. Remember that we stand by our satisfaction guarantee, and if you did not find the experience as good as you expected, you can contact us and we will issue you a refund. Best regards, Federico

Great tour with a wonderful host. He went above and beyond what you would have received from the cruise tours. Rainforest was nice but the canal cruise seeing holwer monkeys and sloths in the wild was a highlight of the trip!!
Response from Host, Apr 2020
Thank you for your review, we are really glad you enjoyed your tour and had a pleasant excursion. Best wishes from Puerto Limon!

This was an excellent tour. We had Juan as our guide and Soto as our driver. They were very professional & managed to get us to the rainforest before the crowds. Soto had an eagle eye for seeing sloths in trees & was an excellent driver. Juan gave us a lot of background information & was polite & kept us refreshed with cool drinks. They made sure that we were back to the ship on time & even took us to a nice photo opp on the beach. I would totally recommend these two and would use them again if in the area.
Response from Host, Feb 2020
Thank you for your nice and detailed review. We are really glad to see that you enjoyed your tour with
Juan Carlos and Yupi. Best wishes.
Dawn_C, Feb 2020
We were met at the cruise terminal quickly and easily. We got away before all the cruise line tours and beat the bus crowds at the rainforest. The price ( once you paid the rainforest entrance fee was similar) Our guide's English was easy to understand and he gave us lots of information on the bus ride to the rainforest. The rainforest tour guide was very knowledgable but we did not see a single animal ( outside the caged snakes and frogs) along our paved walkway walk. The tram ride was enjoyable as was the hike to the waterfall. The waterfall hike sign warned there were hundreds of steps ( stairs) but in actuality it was about half that number. The canal tour guide was excellent at finding many animals ( many lizards, monkeys, birds) and our boat seemed to be one of the nicer ones. It would have been nice to have longer than the hour here because we did not get very far up the canal in the time allotted.
Response from Host, Feb 2020
Thank you so much for your review. More than anything, Veragua is very interesting to learn more about the wide biodiversity of Costa Rica, but you usually don't see much wildlife, most of all you can see the animals they have in their exhibits, and, since this excursion is quite long, unfortunately we cannot take a very extended boat tour on the Tortuguero canals by time limitations that you as cruise ship visitors have. To spot wildlife, our tour to the Cahuita National Park would have been more recommended, although of course we cannot guarantee the animals, since it is wildlife in totally open areas, usually you see quite a variety of fauna. And yes, the entrance fee to Veragua is expensive. Best regards.
Kevin_N, Oct 2019
Our guide Rupert picked us up at the cruise ship & entertained us for about an hour on our car trip to tithe Rainforest with fascinating facts about the area. Quite expensive entrance fees to the Rainforest, as it is a private park, but it was well worth it. Eder, our guide was very knowledgeable and we saw wildlife +++, flowers, butterflies & generally learned heaps about the rainforest. The Canal trip was nice but not as brilliant as the Rainforest.
Response from Host, Oct 2019
Thank you very much for your excellent review, we are very satisfied that you enjoy and had a nice day with Rupert. Best regards from Puerto Limon.

It was a great tour and I really liked our guide. Can't remember his name, but he was very gracious and answered all our questions.
Sabine_R, Mar 2020
