The opportunity to see and swim with whale sharks was a once in a lifetime experience. They were pretty amazing to see when they came up near the surface and they were massive.I am nervous about swimming with big fish but our guide Filipe was so helpful in making me feel safe and comfortable by guiding me in the right direction. It is definitely worth doing but people should be aware of a couple things to ensure your expectations will be met. It is a long boat ride (1 hours and a half to 2 hours) to get to the location where the whale sharks are and about the same to return plus a snorkeling and cerveche stop. There is not a lot of time comparatively spent swimming with the whale sharks. Each person is allowed to swim a maximum of 2 times and only for a couple of minutes each time. You should be aware there is no toilet on the boat and no place to go for about 6 hours. Make sure you go before you board. It was a little confusing at the end of our tour as the driver and guide left somewhere when we stopped in Cancún to drop off other passengers. We ended up switching boats and accidentally left a hotel towel behind. The next day a representative of Isla Fun Tours dropped it off to me at the hotel I was staying at which I thought was above and beyond service.

It was more like an adventure instead of a controlled tour experience. There was a plan but when you want to encounter wildlife in their own environment you have to be patient and be ready in a moments notice. Our guide was awesome and helped us every step of the way!

nce in a lifetime experience and unforgettable memories we saw multiple massive males! Getting to be so close to these amazing creatures without having to deep dive was incredible. Staff was so friendly and got amazing footage of us! Lunch, snacks, beer and drinks were all awesome! I know its one of the more expensive tours but definitely worth!! Boat ride is long please drug yourself accordingly beforehand and bring extra with you😂

Great trip!
Not a ton of Whale Sharks but we weren’t in the optimal time of year and the captain and guide put us on those magnificent fish within 1.5 hours of leaving the dock! Lolo and I totally forget his name but it was 8/23 0800 trip!
Both fellows were amazing!

Great experience Love it got to swim with a whale shark Tour guide was great! Explain everything thoroughly! Met new people! I would 100% recommend this experience if you’re not afraid open Ocean

An absolutely amazing experience! Jose and Javier were brilliant guides! They were so knowledgeable about the whale sharks and other marine life. Bearing in mind the ocean is immense they managed to find us approximately 10 whale sharks swimming around and feeding. Couldnt believe it! We all managed to get two swims with them. Javier took amazing photos/ videos which we were able to purchase for a really reasonable price. On the way back we stopped at a beautiful beach, where Javier prepared a delicious lunch. It was the most memorable day and an experience of a lifetime! We are a family of four with two teen boys and all absolutely recommend it! Just a tip, take travel sickness tablets-you are out in the open ocean and it is very choppy.

If you get seasick easily, I highly wouldn't recommend this unless you take a lot of medication to prevent it. The guide takes you about 1.5 hours out into the ocean and its a bumpy and wavy ride. Seeing the whale sharks is heavily dependent on the day. When I went, we were only able to see one and go in the ocean for about 5 minutes and half our group didn't get that chance. The guides did everything possible to try to find them for us to see but it is not 100% guaranteed. The worst part about it was the boat ride, but seeing the whale shark was an amazing experience. The guides were truly the best as well!

We booked this tour last-minute, excited by the chance to swim with whale sharks. After reading more reviews the next day, we became a bit uneasy—several mentioned disorganization, overcrowding, or limited sightings. Thankfully, none of that was our experience. It was exactly what we had hoped for, and more.
We were lucky to have excellent weather and even luckier to come across a large group—roughly 20 to 30 whale sharks. While other boats were in the area, it never felt chaotic. The coordination between our captain, Lolo, and the other vessels was seamless. Everything felt safe, well-run, and thoughtfully managed.
Felipe, our guide, was fantastic—professional, patient, and clearly passionate about what he does. His instructions were clear, and he did everything possible to ensure each of us had a chance to swim alongside these gentle giants. Lolo was impressive with how well he positioned the boat to give us the perfect jump spots.
One moment I’ll never forget: on our second dive, I entered the water and immediately found myself directly in front of a whale shark moving toward me, mouth open. Just as I braced myself to move out of the way, it gently pivoted and diverted past me with ease. I swam alongside it, fully in awe of its sheer size and grace. It was one of the most breathtaking experiences of my life.
A few tips to make the most of it:
- Don’t hesitate when it’s time to dive. These are quick, targeted jumps. The captain positions the boat perfectly, and the guide cues you at the right moment. If you pause, even for a second, the whale shark will be far ahead—they are fast.
- Be realistic with your expectations. These are wild animals, and sightings vary. We were fortunate to arrive during a peak time (late July/early August), which gave us higher odds. If you’re outside the prime migration season or only a few sharks are present, the experience may be different—but still remarkable in its own way.
- Respect the regulations. Both the guides and guests must follow strict rules to protect the animals. Your ability to dive may be limited by those rules if there are fewer sharks or if conditions demand it—and that’s a good thing for the long-term health of these majestic creatures.
Bottom line: Don’t be discouraged by negative reviews. This tour was the highlight of our trip to Cancun. With a little luck and the right mindset, it can be an absolutely unforgettable experience. We’re grateful to Felipe and Lolo for giving us such a meaningful and well-executed adventure.

This was possibly the highlight of my whole vacation. The whale sharks are phenomenal: majestic, gentle, and gorgeous. Our captain and guide were so nice and helpful.
Only complaints: sunburn, seasickness, and some injury climbing back into the boat (make sure to use your knees).

Absolutely no signage to show where to check in at the dock for this activity - this could be easily fixed
Patricia_I, Jul 2025
Beautiful experience. People were sick but that's just nature. My granddaughter and I had a fabulous time. Once in a lifetime experience.
Daniel_B, Jul 2025
You have to cruise around a bit to find the whale sharks. So there was a long period of searching, as biologists limit access.
Cait_D, Jul 2025
What an incredible experience - we loved the direct assistance and directions in making the most of the moments with these beautiful creatures who are just so gentle to be around. The captain and tour lead were fantastic in making this an unforgetable moment for our family.
Karen_P, Jul 2025
Be prepared for being very patient. You're not guaranteed finding the whalesharks right away. The number you come across can vary between zero and one hundred. Also, the guide takes videos and will sell you yours for $30. You may or may not actually receive the video after paying. We did not.

Nice surprise to have delicious food and drink on the boat/beach afterwards. Great/ experienced crew. I came with a camera but glad they were there to take pics.

My daughter and I took this tour together. You aren't given a lot of time to see the whale sharks but it is still an incredible experience. It's been on my bucket list to see these beautiful creatures for years. Expensive, but worth it!!

Outstanding!!!
A bucket list experience in a beautiful location. Wonderful crew with Felipe and Lolo. Those guys couldn’t have been better.
We were very fortunate on our trip out to the whale shark location.
There were dozens of them out there.
My wife and I had two dives and each encounter was right up close with these magnificent creatures.
Words don’t do it justice!
I can’t guarantee that you’ll see the same amount of whale sharks we did, but you’ll be in the care of two guys who will do their very best to give you a great experience.
BTW the ceviche is fantastic!
I’m not normally a fish guy, but the fresh trigger fish they used for the recipe was delicious
Definitely recommend this company!

Don't book with Viator. No customer service. I went to the dock at the indicated time. I got into the boat. No names were checked. It was a boat for 10 people. Turns out I had actually booked with another company that also departed at the same time on an adjacent dock. That tour company contacted me and said I didn't show up. Apparently that whale shark excursion had 45 people. It was advertised as being much smaller. Fortunately, I got on the wrong boat and had an excellent time. Unfortunately, the 45 people boat tour company got my money and the excellent company I went with by accident didn't. The mix up wasn't Viator's fault. The inaccurate advertisement was. I have now had two weird experiences with Viator. The previous day was a snorkel trip on a dirty boat with indifferent guides and not enough life jackets. I have never used Viator before and will never do so again.

Aidan and Charlie were incredible. The captain put us on the whale shark and the guide got us in position to view it. They gave very clear instructions on what to expect and what to do in the water. It resulted in an epic experience for all.

If you want to have the best time of your life and get to swim with these magnificent creatures - book this tour! Hands down - best out of this world experience! Thank you Philipe and Lolo (tour guides) - you made this happen for me and my family! We are forever thankful!
Carol_W, Jul 2025
Incredible time diving with the whale sharks with Felipe and Lalo. There were probably around 20 whales total around us, giving us plenty of time to do 2 dives per group and get very close to the sharks. Saw turtles and dolphins on the 1.5hr boat ride to the destination - bring Dramamine if you’re prone to seasickness!
Anonymous, Jul 2025
Oh my god so amazing!!!! They said they saw like 200 yesterday but we were only able to see a few. Lots of boats with other groups were there. But I suppose thats to be expected. We did stop at another site on the way back in and there were only 2 or 3 boats including us, so we got to get really close before everyone else showed up.
Christina_H, Jul 2025
Philippe and Lulu were fantastic hosts! We truly enjoyed the trip and we saw a whole pod of whale sharks. It was amazing!

Frustrating experience Not worthy to waste your money and time in a tour that despite the fact that the personal who took care of the tour I took part of was extremely helpful, friendly and professional, despite that and the fact that nature and its animal life are unpredictable, despite all that the tourists like me hired the tour and arrived in massive amounts in about 55! Boats that simply with their vessels scare the Whale Sharks if any remain close to the surface when our boat arrived, I had a short sighting of one single shark for less than 30 seconds before it went down the bottom of the sea and never came back. We were as announced 10 tourists on the boat, but due to understandable regulations only 3 or 2 people are allowed to jump into the water to attempt the encounter with the whale sharks/1. so disappointing and frustrating as a whole. I had only one jump into the water, one whole family didn’t even jump…. So quite unfair. There was not a second jump (as offered and promised) for nobody. So think twice before you waste illusions, money and time and become part of a commercialised swimming with whale sharks experience and increase with your presence the invasion of once wild and pristine natural environments. Sad story and with 160 usd today I was part of it… mea culpa.
Response from Host, Jun 2025
Dear Federico,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience. We truly value all feedback, as it helps us to continue improving and also to clarify expectations for future guests.
First, we’re truly sorry to hear that the experience did not meet your expectations. We understand your frustration, especially when it comes to something as special and anticipated as swimming with whale sharks.
That said, it’s important to highlight that in our tour description, we are always transparent about the nature of this activity. We share with our guests that:
"Our idea is that you enter the water 2 times, however, it all depends on the sea conditions, how many sharks there are and your own swimming skills. They’re not trained or caged and you go to visit their home. You also don’t feed them so there’s no way to guarantee that we will find the whale sharks out there, even though we have a high success rate."
This is stated in the description and the itinerary of the tour
As you mentioned yourself, nature is indeed unpredictable, and while our team does their very best every day to provide a meaningful and respectful encounter, we cannot control how many sharks will be present, how they behave, or how long they stay near the surface. These magnificent animals are in their natural habitat, and that is part of the magic and the challenge of this experience.
Before boarding, every guest is informed again about these conditions, including regulations established to protect the whale sharks, such as limiting the number of swimmers per turn and the importance of minimizing disturbance to their environment.
We truly appreciate your recognition of our staff’s professionalism and friendliness. Your honest review also helps others understand what to expect from an authentic wildlife encounter. We're sorry that on this occasion, the circumstances did not allow for a more complete experience.
Thank you again for choosing us and for sharing your perspective.
Warm regards

We had a great time on the water and enjoyed some memorable moments, but there were a few things that could have been handled better. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see any whale sharks—which we understand is always a possibility with nature—but it seemed like the tour operators knew in advance that sightings had been unlikely for days. It would have been better if they had communicated this more clearly at the start of the tour, so we could manage expectations.
We spent the majority of the day searching for whale sharks, and in hindsight, I wish the time had been split more evenly—half looking for them, and half snorkeling at Isla Mujeres. That would have made the day feel more balanced and fulfilling.
On the plus side, we did get to see several sea turtles and dolphins, which the crew kindly stopped for. Snorkeling near Isla Mujeres was a highlight, and we would’ve loved more time there. The ceviche they served was delicious and fresh, though the lunch overall felt more like a light snack—a small portion of ceviche and half a ham sandwich, despite the advertised “lunch.”
Despite those hiccups, the boat ride was fun, the staff was friendly, and we really enjoyed the time at Isla Mujeres. With a few adjustments and more upfront honesty about wildlife sightings, this could easily be a 5-star tour.

Amazing experience! Absolutely once in a lifetime swimming up close to the sharks. The water was a little choppy the day we went so the ride was a bit rough on our stomachs so be prepared!
nicole_l, Jun 2025
Our pickup was on time and the tour was great. Our tour guide did a great job making sure everyone had ample time to swim with the whale sharks. There were many whale sharks to swim with and even stopped by a reef on the way back for extra snorkeling time. Lunch was delicious as well. Would recommend.
Deborah_S, Jun 2025
There are a lot of rules and you only get to go in the ocean twice to see them and it is not guaranteed but they will be there. They are wild animals. We lucked out and hit a whole pod. I wish I could’ve spent more time. Our guides were fantastic. The worst part was having to wear those orange life vest
Meagan_H, May 2025
Minus one star for not seeing any whale sharks. Not their fault, no one was finding them that day, but it is what it is… they did take us snorkeling to help compensate. Minus another star for communication, we didn’t get pick up time until the night before, & when driver was running 30 minutes late, we got no notification. At check in at ferry, it was kind of a cluster.
Those were the cons. Pros were the staff were very friendly, captain & guide & driver were very nice. They were very hospitable on the boat, captain made fresh ceviche that was delicious. Water and beers were ice cold.
