Buzzing thru the food market then riding along rice paddies on a motorbike to a serene waterway sets the scene for this wonderfully authentic experience. Tam, a gifted chef is full of enthusiasm and hands on knowledge. He will make you feel comfortable and well looked after. Thank you Tam, you are a legend.

Outstanding cooking class and experience

The company reached out and arranged to pick us up at our hotel which was not on the list. I recommend closed shoes for the market tour! The bamboo boat ride was fun and we tried to catch small crabs. We even got to paddle! Chef Tam was an excellent instructor, even passing on knife skills. Our 5 course meal was more than we could eat. The cao loa noodles and the mushroom pancake were the tastiest of the 5 dishes. WC stops were provided. Bring cash for the market or drinks with lunch and tips.

Mixed review on this one. Not what we expected. The going to markets and the actual cooking course was great. Hosts were fantastic. The drive to the river to the coconut boast was long and the boats were not what we expected. A couple of of ladies rowing us singing songs wasn’t what this tour described. Was a bit amateurish but we did have a good time

This was THE BEST! Through happenstance, I was the only one on the tour so personal tour! Ag (Michael for nickname) was my tour guide and Tam was the chef. Tam has over 15 years experience as a chef at many very fancy hotels and both the food and the presentation was 4 stars! Ag was incredible too. Born here he is a a true local and his patience and local knowledge was impressive. He took me on a tour of the market for the fresh ingredients we cooked with. The bamboo boat ride and crab fishing was SO FUN! I can't remember our Captain's name but she was hilarious and we sang songs as we paddled. The whole day was incredible and so special. Cannot recommend enough!

My friend and I did this cooking class in Hoi An and overall had such a fun experience! The booking bit was a little confusing at first, SuSu messaged asking to change our time last minute (which we couldn’t) and there was some back and forth about the pick-up spot, but we stuck with our hotel in the end which was fine. We got picked up by moped and started with a market visit, which was really nice. It was cool seeing where all the ingredients came from, and they were really patient while we stopped to buy a little souvenir. The basket boat part wasn’t really for us though. We were taken to a pretty isolated bit of the river with a really energetic local guy who didn’t speak English, and even though we asked not to spin, he still tried and he was quite reluctant to take us back to shore. It was more stressful than fun to be honest. The cooking class itself totally made up for it though. Chef A was amazing, he’s been doing this for years and was such a great teacher. The food we made was delicious and they took loads of photos for us too. At the end they were quite pushy about getting us to write a review on the spot, which was a bit awkward, but apart from that we really loved it. Would definitely recommend the cooking class, just maybe skip the basket boat part!

Pushy upselling outweighed the cooking experience

We booked this class expecting a fun, authentic experience, but it was one of the most disappointing things we did in Vietnam. From the start there was relentless upselling — we were repeatedly pushed to book more tours, visit tailor shops, and buy souvenirs, not just by one staff member but by several. It felt intrusive and exhausting. The organisation was poor (our 4:30pm booking was suddenly changed to 3pm). The market tour was uninformative, followed by unexpected motorbike rides to an underwhelming bamboo boat and crab fishing activity. The cooking session itself was average at best, with food quality far below what we expected for the price. The worst part was the chef’s behaviour afterwards: he pressured me to visit his sister’s shop, then later turned up at the bar where my husband and I were, and even followed me while I was walking alone. This was completely inappropriate. Overall: poor organisation, mediocre food, pushy upselling, and unprofessional behaviour.

We had an awesome time on this tour! It was a lot of fun, and the food we cooked was excellent. The tour organizers responded promptly over WhatsApp and were there on time to pick us up. Would definitely recommend for a unique, cultural experience in Vietnam! My only note to improve would be to explain more about Vietnamese cuisine and culture during the tour, so that we could learn as well as cook. Thanks!

The vibe was a little meh. Cooking was as a group, but eating was not. Crab fishing was ok, in a deserted area. The coconut village was not in the expected location (nowhere near the Google Maps location).

The cooking class was the best part. Otherwise buyer beware. They offered hotel pick up but when I asked what time the pick up would be, we were instructed to meet at a tailor shop in town. Not a huge deal as we went in town early to explore, just shouldn’t be offered if they aren’t going to deliver. Then we were asked if we could ride bicycles but no other details given. After a quick trip through the market, we started on a 30 minute bike ride that we were not expecting and was not in the description at all. Once making it to the bamboo boats, we went down a fairly sludgy canal that did not serve the river beauty in the country side as promised in the tour description . On to the cooking class which was quite fun and the food was delicious, the only reason I’m giving 2 stars instead of 1. The ingredients were fresh and we all had a chance to prepare many parts of the meal and enjoy all of them. This was worth the $30 but the rest of the trip really brought the whole experience down. We ended with another 30 minute bike ride back to town where I was run off the road by a bus just before we finished. Overall not the worst, but just be prepared for what you’re in for. We had limited time in Hoi An and thought we would get the nipa forest experience combined with this tour as my husband really wanted to see this, but it sadly disappointed and we didn’t have time for a real trip.

The cooking class was nice and fun, and we got to eat our own dishes which were very tasty. However, the dishes are prepared just by following the chef's instructions, there is little explanation and the dishes are the chef's own recipes, so not really "traditional" Vietnamese meals. For the rest, the trip to the market was pretty useless and the "crab fishing activity" was just about rocking around and spinning on a small boat with a local who couldn't speak English. As other reviews mention, these activities could be skipped to dedicate more time to the actual cooking class. Overall, the activity was a lot of fun and I got to know nice people, so I enjoyed myself and in that sense it was worth it. However, there are probably better cooking workshops out there.

This tour does the bare minimum. These are for the following reasons: - Market tour was 1.5 stars/ 5 stars. There is no explanation of the fruits, vegetables etc. apart from pointing out the obvious and we just wander around aimlessly through the markets inside old quarter. - Coconut Boat Tour was 1 star/ 5 stars. BEWARE because this does not take you on the official area where you go through the bamboo forest or see the performers eg spinning coconut ride or the fishers. Rather, they just take you to a random bush and camp there for 5 minutes. The only upside was the ladies rowing the boat were very enthusiastic. - Cooking lesson and food was 3 stars/ 5 stars. The cooking lesson was a bit random and with no real explanation of what we were cooking and the meals were (1) charcoal eggplant (2) stir fry chicken Cao Lau (3) mushroom pancake and (4) banana blossom salad. We went on the Hoi An Tropical Cooking Tour the year before so perhaps it’s unfortunate to compare, but the food (clay pot rice, fried spring rolls, traditional Vietnamese pancake, papaya salad). lesson and experience was way better (not to mention it actually took us to the offical coconut boat ride site). However, the food we made was still good which justifies the 3 stars. Overall, 1.8 stars, but rounding up it is 2 stars. Would not recommend. Grateful they did not ask for any tips.

A deeply enjoyable experience

Headed out into the countryside of Hoi An to enjoy beautiful scenery, paddle around in a bamboo basket boat, and spend a peaceful afternoon in a quiet kitchen making an amazing meal under expert guidance. Truly felt like the tour gives locals revenue without requiring them to enact caricatures of themselves.

The market visit was interesting to learn about several ingredients in traditional Hoian dishes. The Coconut Boat tour was fun, and so was the cooking class. As far as how the meal we cooked turned out…it was AWESOME! I’d like to take the credit, but the guide and teacher, Mr. An, deserves the credit.
