Excellent experience. Ryuji is very knowledgeable about all facets of the Castle. He was so kind & thoughtful about the heat & our comfort. He was fun & helped us with photos. Highly recommend!
If you are fortunate enough to get Ryuji as your guide for Himeji Castle, then consider your trip to Japan complete. Himeji Castle wasn't on our original itinerary, but I saw a reel on social media featuring the castle and thought it would be interesting to include it. Interesting doesn't even begin to cover it - Ryuji and his tour of the castle were EXCEPTIONAL. He amazes us by speaking Japanese, English and Italian fluently, but even more so by having a truly funny and wickedly quick sense of humor. No pun intended, but how he translated humor across our cultures made our experience top-notch. He was also so knowledgeable and told us so many facts through funny, interesting anecdotes that I had to take notes on my phone to keep up and remember everything he told us about the castle. We loved hearing about all of the defensive tactics the castle had throughout - from its labyrinth-like "entrance," numerous firing holes, false entrances and/or ceilings, "hidden" floors, steep staircases, etc. - and it was never attacked. It also was never destroyed by earthquake, fire or war, so like our guide, it is extraordinary. To tour a 400-plus-year-old building in its mostly original state is striking. Being able to walk on the main keep's wooden floors and numerous levels was a remarkable experience; ending at the top, with the shrine and a 360-degree view of the city of Himeji, was simply outstanding. This was the last tour on our itinerary, and Ryuji made it that much more special - he is the crème de la crème (best of the best). We could not have asked for a better tour and guide on which to end our trip. Highly recommend - 10 out of 5 stars!

Ryuigi was great. He recommended a good restaurant before the tour and waited patiently when we were a few minutes late. He then adjusted very well when we told him that we had to cut the tour short. The tour itself was perfect - he had solid knowledge of the site, explained things in an interesting manner at the right level of detail, and helped us avoid the crowds (which were huge). I would highly recommend this tour and Ryuiji specifically.
Ryuji was an excellent guide with vast knowledge on history. He had great humor too which we enjoyed very much. We highly recommend this co and Ryuji.

Rie was a great tour guide. She explained lots of cool details about the castle and took many photos of our family. We really got a lot out of this tour and would recommend it to others who are interested in learning more about this castle. Her tour made visiting this gorgeous site much more interesting than it would have been with just an audio tour and guide book.

We had a fantastic private tour of Himeji castle with Ryuji. We were given an engaging history of the castle, the town and the owners of the castle. Ryuji was professional, witty and fun. We learnt so much about the castle. We also appreciated Ryuji’s recommendations for lunch and future destinations for us to visit.
Ryuji was an excellent guide. Pace was perfect. He geared the tour toward our interests. He was very knowledgable about the castle, grounds and surrounding area. He answered our questions as we went helping to understand the nuance of the castle.

Himeji Castle is an extraordinary place, well worth the day trip. But the even more pleasant surprise was Ryuji, our guide. He was knowledgeable, thoughtful, funny, and patient, as we worked our way slowly through the castle and grounds. He wove a great tale, shedding light on the history of the place, and the nature of its design. He’s also knowledgeable about today’s Himeji, and he gave a great bakery recommendation as well! I can’t recommend Ryuji highly enough.
This castle was amazing to see and so much to learn about the history and architecture. Our guide, Rei, was amazing and so knowledgeable. Be prepared for crowds, walking, and a lot of information.
Our guide Ruygi (no way I will have spelt that correctly was so lovely and his knowledge of the castle was outstanding. We really enjoyed this tour, we learnt lots we would not have on our own. The time went very fast

He is local to Himeji, providing an interesting and informative history of Himeji Castle. He provided a few different of stories of changes that have taken place at the Castle over the past couple of decades and since the site was restored.

Lovely afternoon with our guide Rie, who was prompt , organized, and spoke English very well. She provided a thorough explanation of the history and engineering of the castle, including many hidden features - and also showed us some great photo spots.

Ryuji is a wonderful and friendly guide. Being a local, he is very well versed in the castle history and has a wealth of knowledge of the surrounding area in general. We were educated on many aspects of the castle and area while sharing some great laughs and humor.

Rie was our outstanding guide for Himeji Castle in April 2025.
She met us at the castle entrance and was easy to find. She was cheerful, energetic, engaging, and extemely knowledgeable. She told us she was among the local guides selected to introduce the Castle (via video) for World Expo in Osaka.
She toured us through the castle, and pointed out that we were visiting on a special day where the adjoining towers were also open, and she was flexible enough that we included these in our tour. She helped focus on architectural details, much to my partners delight! She often pointed out small subtle details that most other tourists shuffled past without any idea. She also helped us find lunch and pointed out where to go to tour the gardens too (separate ticket). Also her English was excellent which makes such a difference (for us). We thoroughly enjoyed her as our personal tutor for learning all about Himeji Castle and you will too!!
This tour of Himeji castle was one of the top highlights of our trip to Japan! Ryuji is a knowledgeable and engaging tour guide, he provided an incredible amount of detail. Also, he really took the time to include our 11 year old daughter in the conversations. 10/10!
