The half -day tour was ideal for our schedule but clearly more time is needed if a more extensive tour is wanted. With our guide Yama-san we were able to customize our tour before arriving to cover the most important sites for time available.The Mt. Shosha Ropeway was a great way to get to Engyo Temple and see the area. Interesting to hear that many films and dramas have been filmed at the Temple and Mr. Shosa (e.g., The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise). The Koko-en Garden is also beautiful. We elected not to go inside Himeji Castle but only took photos of the exterior and grounds.

We had a wonderful time with Yama-san today. We explored Himeji castle and the gardens as well as Nadagiku Sake Brewery. Yama-san was so wonderful and knowledgeable throughout our tour. He knows all the history and takes great photos for you so you don’t miss out on group shots. We wish we were staying longer to do another of his tours, like sake tasting. Our visit to Himeji Castle and the nearby gardens with Rie-san was the unanimous highlight of our two-week trip for our group of 9 adults – most of whom use the pictures we took at the Castle as their Facebook profile pictures. Rie-san knows everything there is to know about Himeji Castle, and is very happy to tell you all about it.
On our visit to Himeji with Rie-san, we learned about the wonderfully odd statues lining the street on the walk from from Himeji Station to the Castle. We learned about the purpose of the Castle, and the original bounds of the walled city around it. We learned about the periodic preservation process. Rie-san brought us through the Castle grounds and explained the function of all the different gates – like the Water Gate. Rie-san explained what parts of the Castle are original, and which have been restored. She knows all the hidey-holes used by the Samurai retainers for guarding their Daimyo. Rie-san knows all the best spots for pictures too!
In short, you absolutely cannot go wrong with booking your tour of Himeji Castle with Rie-san.

Great introduction to Himeji for the time we had. Yama-San was a great guide around this beautiful city. Furthermore, he is in incredible shape. The weather was particularly brutal the day we had our tour and walking around was wearing us down. However we made it and he was very patient with us. He also gave us some suggestions for eateries too.

Fantastic tour with our guide, Hiromi Mizoi. She was exceptionally gracious and knowledgeable—she even provided guidance for our travel from our cruise ship in Osaka to Himeji.
Having grown up near the castle grounds, she has encyclopedic knowledge of the castle, its architecture and design, and pointed us to the most picturesque spots. She was friendly and accommodating, and sought to personalize our tour wherever possible.
Himeji Castle is both beautiful and impressive, and the Koko-En gardens were peaceful and lovely.

Harumi was an incredible guide! She is friendly and knowledgeable. We went to Himeji Castle and gardens, had a traditional Japanese lunch, and walked through some shops. She even helped my son find the exact souvenir he wanted! We had a great time!

Our guide Norio san was easy to work with from the beginning. He met us at the Himeji Station and it was an easy walk to Himeji Castle. He shared many details about the Himeji Castle. We did the half-day tour with Yama-san, who was an amazing tour guide! He was very charismatic and funny, as well as attentive. We visited Koko-en, Himeji Castle and the Nadagiku Sake Brewery. Yama-san had many cool facts and stories about the history of the place, and during the tour we learnt a lot about Japanese history and culture. He was also very helpful in showing us recommendations at the Himeji Station food court. Would recommend this half-day tour!

My tour guide was Hiro. She met me at the train station and proceeded with the tour from there. Hiro was very knowledgeable of the castle, its history, and the surrounding area since she is a local too! Her English was great! Himeji Castle is a world heritage site and one of the few remaining original castles in Japan.
I visited Himeji Castle on a beautiful, sunny day in mid April. Due to the timing, I was able to see some cherry blossoms fortunately! A great bonus! Also, my timing aligned with the Special Spring Exhibition for the interconnecting towers. The cost for the exhibition was 1000 yen, in addition to the ~1000 yen cost of the combined castle and gardens ticket. I would highly recommend having cash on hand.
Hiro's tour highlighted the castle defenses and history. She also knew the best spots to take pictures! Once inside the castle towers, you will be required to take off your shoes. Make sure you have good socks or a pair of slippers. Carrying a bag for your shoes is recommended too. The flooring is mostly original, so this is meant to protect it from damage. While inside, Hiro highlighted some of the key architectural features like the main pillars, gun/archery holes, etc. The castle is multiple levels, so be prepared to go up stairs a few times. They can be steep and a little slippery too! At the top, there's a shrine and great views of the surrounding town.
After going inside the main castle tower, we toured the interconnecting towers. You get unique views of the main tower along with the surrounding area. Everything is well maintained, quite impressive! There were also some weapon props like spears and guns.
After touring the inside of the castle, we took a quick stroll on the perimeter. Here's where you get some great shots of the castle with cherry blossoms! The castle tour took about 3.5 hours total, with the remaining time for Koko-en, the gardens located close by. The gardens are not as old as the castle, but a nice change of pace. Hiro provided some of the history along with her knowledge of the various flora.
My tour ended up being close to 5 hours total. At the end, Hiro helped me find a place to eat and dropped me off there. As a solo traveler, having a great tour guide and a local to spend time with added so much to the experience. Thank you so much Hiro! I would highly recommend Hiro and the Japan Guide Agency!

Highly recommend this tour, especially with Chiyuki! She was so well prepared and knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor! We wanted to spend a day in Himeji while traveling between Hiroshima and Kyoto.
Yama gave us such a memorable day. He was a wonderful guide in Himeji. In 6 hours, we toured the Castle and the Koko-en Garden and the highlight was when he took us to Mount Shosa/Engyo-ji Temple. We topped off our day with the best strong matcha tea from a tea shop near the train. Yama was a great communicator with us and sent a few emails before the trip. He met us at the station and brought us back. Thank you Yama!!!

Norio designed our tour as per our requirements. We wanted to visit the Himeji castle and a sake brewery. He took us around the castle explaining us it’s key features and the history behind it. Then, he took us to a sake brewery explaining how sake is made and we were able to taste and purchase our favorite. Norio is a very gentle and polite person.

We, a family of three, did a four hour Himeji tour with Yama-san to see Himeji castle, Koko-en Garden, and Sosha Shrine. Yama-san was a superb tour guide. He shared many stories on the sites we viewed, including his own insights, that captivated all of us, including our thirteen year old. He mixed humor and history, while also providing the flexibility to linger at certain areas longer. Our child especially liked the water features in Koko-en Garden and he allowed her to explore freely.
Throughout the tour, Yama-san also shared Japanese cultural information. While walking to Himeji, he explained various products, shops, and restaurants we passed by, pointing out several recommendations. After the tour, we visited several of the shops and ate at the restaurant he recommended at the train station. Even though it was at the food court, it was delicious!
Yama-san has terrific English and a wonderful sense of humor. He held the full attention of our jet-lagged thirteen year-old, who was attentive and engaged throughout because of him. He took photos of the full family throughout, which was wonderful to have.
We highly recommend tours with Yama-san!! He is the best tour guide we've had on this trip. Even though he shared so much information, it was perfectly balanced and enjoyable. We enjoyed Yama-san's pace and style. Thank you, Yama-san, for a fantastic tour of Himeji!
