Two hours of the history of Ireland presented by Jodie whose enthusiasm was so infectious together with his incredible and in depth knowledge spanning a wide period through to present day. Totally fascinating and a guide who was clearly passionate about the subject. Highly recommend but requires close attention as a lot to take in. But very worthwhile.

Eoin started with an easy to follow history of Dublin covering 5000 years in 5 minutes! Great overview upon which he provided more comprehensive detail at each stop. Really appreciated that Eoin included recent history as well as it was very relatable. The walk itself is not difficult and Eoin was easily heard. Highly recommend. (Inside joke: Eoin, we hope Gordon’s umbrella is serving you well!)

The guide was really nice and explained really well. I had fun, even if the weather was freezing. Would definitely recommend.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Delighted that you had fun while also being well informed—in spite of the freezing weather. Unfortunately, we can't control the weather!

We found the two-hour walking tour to be incredibly informative. And thoroughly enjoyed the experience despite the crisp January weather.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Caolan Maher was your guide, our latest recruit.

The historic walking tour...

Kim_B, Dec 2025
The historic walking tour was great, we learned a lot on the colorful, detailed history of Dublin. Our guide was very easy to listen to and gave a nice variety of information from funny little stories to more in depth points.

Response from Host, Dec 2025

It's always a delicate balance! Sounds like our guide got it right in this case.

Excellent into to Dublin

Chris_F, Oct 2025
A fun and informative tour. A fantastic way to briefly learn about Ireland’s complicated history. John D. did a wonderful job of explaining how Dublin became what it is today while taking us to many of the city’s top sites. The tour took us past many significant historical sights which we then revisited later at our leisure on our own time. Very happy we did this walking tour at the start of our stay!

Eoin was extremely entertaining and informative. His grasp of the history was wonderful. It was a rainy, windy morning but Eoin made it all worthwhile.

Very Historical!

Kiley_S, Sep 2025
If you love history, you’ll like this tour. However I thought it was way too in-depth into history and politics. It was honestly hard to comprehend and very boring. I could tell the rest of the folks in our tour group felt the same way. I’ve done around 20+ different historical walking tours throughout Europe and this one was way more political and dense than any others I’ve done. I guess I thought it would have been us walking around and learning about the different sites and buildings around Dublin - more focused around the culture. This was more around the history of Ireland. Again if you love history this tour is for you. The tour also went over by a half hour and I thought it would never end. Our tour guide was clearly super passionate and a great presenter but just way too in-depth for me.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

If you sign up for a 'Historical Walking Tour of Dublin' I think you should expect it to be, well, 'historical'! And if you had paid attention to our promotional material or read some other reviews (90% 5-star), you would know that all our guides are history graduates & that, consequently, our tours are 'in depth' (although a bit challenging for some, as in this case). As for others in your group who 'you could tell' were also bored? I have yet to hear any complaints. But on one point I am in complete agreement: if you love history you'll like our tour.

As well as being an excellent historian Jody is also a gifted actor, skills he brings to our walking tours to great effect.

Great history lesson for Dublin and Ireland!

Laura_F, Aug 2025
The tour provided a great history of Dublin and Ireland in general. It helped me understand all the different peoples influencing Dublin’s history, economy, and religion.

Jody’s tour most comprehensive and engaging

Melissa_T, Aug 2025
Jody was a fantastic and engaging storyteller. As a graduate student of history, he offered a comprehensive yet cohesive review of thousands of years of Irish history, from the Celtic settlers to modern day Brexit. He wove otherwise disparate information into a fascinating story of the Irish political landscape. Not only that, Jody was incredibly personable, with an effusive demeanor and well timed jokes. Could not recommend his tour more!! A definite must for any tourist wanting to understand the Dublin behind the flag!!

Very informative and interesting tour

Konrad_B, Aug 2025
You learn a lot about Dublin but also Irish History in general, from Viking times up until very recent events. Highly recommend!

Lots of historical detail...

Morna_P, Jul 2025
Lots of historical detail - our guide was lovely and great at sharing his passion about and knowledge of Ireland’s history. Probably not suited for younger children but my teenager really enjoyed it, as well as myself.

Response from Host, Jul 2025

Glad that you liked the tour. And if our guide could keep your teenager entertained as well we'll take as a huge compliment!

History made fun and relevant

Dublin History Walking Tour

Mark_Q, Jun 2025
Our guide Jody conveyed a tremendous amount of information in a very engaging fashion. This tour would be of greatest interest to history buffs since the presentation goes into considerable detail about people and events. Be aware that there is a good deal of walking over two full hours.

Never came to meet us as map showed.

StanThomasson_K, Jun 2025
Waited at gates of Trinity College as map showed and never had a guide come!! Money back please for contour.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

For the past 3 years our meeting point has been the Grattan statue, opposite Trinity College front gate (I.e. not @ the gate itself). Our guide was there & tried to contact you @ the mobile number provided. We have updated our listing on Viator but it seems there are still some 'phantom' websites out there with incorrect information. This is outside our control. Nevertheless we will issue a refund if you contact info@historicaltours.ie. Tommy Graham

Best walking tour ever!!

Cristian_N, Jun 2025
I’ve taken many walking tours on my travels and this was hands down the best one ever. Owen knew a lot about everything! He was funny and thorough. That’s a great combination in a tour guide. Would highly recommend!

This was an excellent walk through a small part of Dublin to learn the history of the city and the country. We stopped at many cool landmarks, statues, and other historical points and learned their importance to the people. Definitely worth the investment if you like history. It's a decent length walk, so make sure to watch the weather for your dress code and wear comfy shoes!

Great introduction to the city of Dublin

Lynn_L, May 2025
John was full of historical information and was very interesting. He had a great sense of humor that kept us engaged for the full two and half hour tour. It was a great introduction to the city center of Dublin and covered a wide range of sights. The tour helped orient us to the layout of the city and that made our trip easier.

Loved this trip!
