Immerse yourself in South African wine culture and enjoy a day of tastings, without having to worry about driving, with this hop-on hop-off wine tram in Franschhoek and round-trip coach transfers from Cape Town.

Meet at one of several convenient collection points in Cape Town and depart on a comfortable coach to Franschhoek. Admire the scenery, listen to wine commentary, and stay connected with complimentary Wi-Fi along the way.

At Groot Drakenstein Tram station, pick up your tram tickets. Choose which wineries you want to visit, and board the corresponding tram or bus.

Disembark at your choice of wineries for tours, tastings, and food (all own expense). Visit as many wineries as you’d like and spend as much time as you want during operating hours. At the end of your tour, board your coach to return back to Cape Town.

This was a great experience. Do take your own money along, as you pay for your tastings at the different estates. The time in-between the pick up is rushed though, it's impossible to finish all the 6 or 7 assigned estates in 1 day. A wholesome and lovely experience.

The day was fantastic the wine tour itself was great but had issues with pick up at the pick up point the driver never turned up so had to get a uber to the terminal and they were supposed to to explain how the day proceed but nobody did and had to work it out by ourselves and help from others on our tour so they could improve on those things but otherwise a fantastic day

Great concept and fantastic way to explore the region

I really enjoyed this your and the concept of exploring the wineries via a hop on hop off tram and bus is fantastic! It was well organised on the day and worked seamlessly. There was a good range of wineries to visit and the wineries were well prepared for the tram. I would have liked more details in advance, as it is even hard to follow in the actual website. Each stop is for one hour. The maximum wineries (for our line and timetable) was four, though three was more like the reality. Knowing this in advance, and which wineries are tram vs bus, you could do a bit more research and plan your day.

Franschhoek Wine Tram – good experience, but check your line carefully

Well organised and fun way to explore the valley. The tram ride itself was enjoyable and staff were friendly. However, despite requesting the Pink Line by email, we were booked on the Navy Line and couldn’t change on the day, which limited the vineyards we could visit. Tip: double-check you’re on the right line for the wineries you want. Also, to really enjoy tastings and lunch, you can realistically do only about 3 vineyards (first stop around 10:30am, last bus back about 4:30pm). Overall a great concept, but planning is key.

Timing is everything

Eat breakfast at home, because the shop at the station does not even have ready made sandwiches, only muffins. They offer sandwiches, but if you stay and wait for your sandwich, you will miss the first Tram. Time is very tight.

No AC, unbearable in summer

Everyone at each vineyard was great. However, the ride each way was pretty bad due to lack of AC. It was expressed that there would be AC on the way up and down and there was definitely no AC AND no windows down. If you are traveling in summer time, it’s truly unbearable.

Very tight schedule

A fully air-conditioned bus picks you up from VNA waterfront and takes you to the main terminal for the wine tram and wine bus. Honestly you can only do about three wineries in that time allocated. The way this is structured, if you want to do 4 wineries, you only get a total of one hour per wine estate to get off the bus or the tram, get to your winery, do a tasting, settle your bill, and get back on the bus or tram. If you spend more than one hour at any given estate, that reduces the number of total estates you can visit. And some of the estates are not within walking distance of the tram stop. You need to get on another bus and sit for 10 to 15 minutes, which means you only have 35 or 40 minutes to do a tasting, and that is not enough time. they do make the overall experience, leaving from Cape Town getting there and getting back easy. However, if you truly wanna enjoy that area, in my opinion you're better off renting a car and going there or arranging an Uber. That allows you to get there earlier, and stay late till the wine states actually close and maybe experience four or five tastings and see that whole area. Even better is to get a hotel in the Franschoek area and explore it slowly.

The route schedules and stop times are fixed and have been structured very carefully. Our timing is designed to: Ensure guests who are flying out of Cape Town in the evening can comfortably make their flights, and Avoid making the experience an overly long and tiring day for most visitors. We do understand that some guests would prefer more time at each estate or to visit more wineries in a single day, and we appreciate you highlighting this perspective.

This tour was specifically for the “Blue Line, Bus First.” It was limited to 8 wineries, none of which was recommended by ChatGPT. There should have been some explanation of what the tour entailed and options for other lines. None of the wines were that good.

Hectic and not much to lesrn

It was nice to experience Franschhook and its beauty. The trip went well with bus from Cape Town, but it was a little hectic since we had 1 hour to visit each wine farm, and it took time to order wine, get it and pay before the bus/tram picked us up. The tram was cute, but the trip was short and not very adventurous. We managed to visit 2 wine farms because we missed the bus by 5 minutes and had to wait 1 more hour for the next bus. Its important to make a plan which farms to visit before you go. Not every farm is worth visiting, some are beautiful. My experience is that its more comfortable to go with a smaller group and visit 2-3 farms and get guided around and learn more about the wine, grapes and process.

I had fun and tasted several wines... if you want to visit all the wineries you need to do it over several days because the schedules are very tight... Mixed feelings, an honest review

Positive element of this tram meant there didn’t need to be a designated driver, but honestly that was the only perk. It says “hop on and off” which sounds so simple, but it’s not really. You have complicated timetables to navigate and unless you plan really well a lot of waiting around. (With the arrival time it’s realistic to only get two estates in unless you’re downing your wine) Its actually a bus mainly that takes you round, the tram only goes to 3 estates. Very beautiful countryside and we really did have a good day but that was just the scenery, company and fantastic beverages.

It was a nice tour and very reasonably priced. There were 8 wineries available on the blue line. All in f the staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, in particular Ben the wine host at Holden Franze. The wine was very reasonably priced and generously poured. Only negative for me was the heat on the bus was very uncomfortable as the aircon was very good at all. Something that I think would improve the experience if there was more information in advance on the wineries, what they offer, types of wines etc so that it would allow you to make better use of your trip and plan for the ones that best suited your preferences.

On booking, I was promised an email the day before my tour. It didn't arrive, if it had many of my issues could have been resolved. Tour was advertised as hop-on, hop-off. However I only ever knew what the next stop was and a few notes about that vineyard. I wasn't given any information about future stops or a timetable, so you couldn't select stops. The itinerary in advert contains minimal detail, really a start time and general destination. Tour is advertised as 8 hours, but 10 hours is more realistic. The trambus seats, were uncomfortable and slippery seeming to direct you to the floor. The majority of food options at the stops seemed to be intended for two people to share. I often make trips on my own and enjoy either my own company or the friends I make. So please don't read this review as being from a lonely guy. With a little more thought this could be a great trip.

Please check your email for meeting time and location. The bus will leave you. If the bus leaves you, you can pay an expensive fee out to the very lovely Franschhoek and continue on your wine tasting tours. We loved the tour. Everyone was very kind.

The tour itself, no complain. The area is gorgeous and the tour operator did their best. Only really bad upfront communication by Viator that caused me miss the bus. Clearly not my mistake and not City Sightseeing’s. Nowhere in the app I could have received information that my pickup time was different. And the complain handled very badly. Will never use Viator again

Great tour but poorly operated by Viatour

Do not book this tour with Viatour. We were given the wrong meeting info and almost missed the tour. Book it with another company. The wine tram itself is a good tour but our day was somewhat spoiled by confusion and stress at the start.
