Saddle up and head to the top of Pacaya Volcano on the outskirts of Antigua on this private tour. When you reach the top, your guide will prepare pizza using hot volcanic rocks, while you roast marshmallows over hot lava.     So. Much. Fun! Dave, aka Alaska, was such a treat! He was so knowledgeable about the amazingness of Guatemala and had such great stories to tell about Nikki (the owner of the animal reserve the tour is done through). What their organization is doing is truly inspiring and warmed my heart to hear how well the animals are preserved and cared for. Their work transcends beyond helping tourists see the beauty of Antigua. They are truly changing the lives of so many animals and it’s inspiring. The tour was a blast! And to eat pizza and s’mores made with the lava coals from the volcano?! Come on! And the pizza was super good too! The horses were beautiful and gentle. And most importantly, you learn SO much! Thank you to Nikki, Dave and the awesome cowboys for fitting us in and making it such a memorable experience! We look forward to next time!

    Poor communication

    The excursion overall was just okay. The horses themselves were not the best experience—mine had a hard time listening and would randomly speed up and slow down on its own, which caused me to almost fall off a few times. It didn’t feel very controlled or safe at moments. The bigger issue was what happened after. I accidentally left my phone in the car after being dropped off at my Airbnb and notified the excursion host less than 5 minutes later. From there, communication was poor. I was sent to the wrong location to retrieve my phone, which led to unnecessary stress and confusion. I ended up having to essentially track down the vehicle myself in a country I’m not familiar with. This meant paying for an Uber to the incorrect location, then walking another 15 minutes before finally getting my phone back. This was especially frustrating considering I had already left a $40 USD tip for the driver. Overall, I would strongly suggest they improve communication and their process for handling lost items, because that experience was far more stressful than it needed to be.

    Such a great experience! Definitely had everything covered. Our guide was super informative and very knowledgeable about the land. His timing was perfect and I would highly recommend this adventure. The horses were taken care of and super fun to ride. The cowboy even took photos of us and shared them all at the end.

    Once in a lifetime experience

    Wonderful experience! My twin and I booked the early 8:30am tour and were greeted at our hotel by David. The ride over was stunning and the experience as a whole was a once and a lifetime adventure. The whole process was smooth and the ride up was very smooth and stress free, even for beginners. We ate pizza wine at the top which added to the fun. 10/10 recommend!

    Our guide Marlo was amazing. The pizza and marshmallows at the top, so good! We didn't get a sunset out of it because of clouds but I would still do it. It was stunning!

    This was so fun! We were with a small group. The horses were well trained and accompanied by their caballeros. A pizza dinner was tasty too! My only disappointment was that we didn't get a great view of the volcanoes because the cloud cover didn't cooperate. Of note, the owners have non-profit horse clinic that just opened to help keep the horses in much of Guatemala healthy.

    We absolutely loved our ride. Lori was an incredible guide from start to finish, offering mint candies during the windy drive, recommendations for local activities elsewhere in Antigua, info about the towns we drove through and introductions to our guides. The trip up the volcano was mellow, the pizza at the top was great, and the cute individual snores kits really made the children smile. It was very foggy on our day but that just made it a different type of experience. Would highly recommend.

    One of a kind experience!

    This was truly a one of a kind experience! I highly recommend doing this specific tour as it’s cheaper for solo travelers than the one where you have to hike the trail yourself and all proceeds go to supporting a great cause to help the local community. Niki was super helpful in helping me secure a solo spot with a group despite the tour requiring at least two people. Lori, our tour guide, was also amazing and gave us ton of great recommendations for the rest of our trip. She even helped me arrange a ride back to Guatemala City from Antigua at a cheaper cost than Uber as I was worried there wouldn’t be Uber available at night in Antigua. The horses were so gentle, despite the trail being a little bit rocky, and the local cowboy was great in leading the horses so that you can take in the scenery or take pictures. The pizza was also really delicious and it’s so cool to be able to say it was cooked on lava rocks!

    Went with my 5 year old daughter, and we had an absolute blast! Communication was great from start to finish, Lori and the cowboys were very nice, helpful and knowledgeable. The only issue is that my daughter fell in love with the horse “Princess”, and she can’t take her home.

    A Magical Volcano Adventure

    Our horseback ride to Pacaya Volcano was a highlight of my travels in Guatemala. The ascent on well-trained horses offered breathtaking views and a thrilling experience. At the summit, the unique opportunity to eat pizza cooked over geothermal heat was both delightful and delicious. The presence of friendly local dogs and the descent under moonlight added to the charm and adventure of the tour. What’s more, knowing that the tour supports local communities made the experience even more rewarding.
