We booked this trip the night before at 9pm. We scheduled a 6am pick up. I was a little concerned that I booked too late for everything to work out. However, Marcos showed up at 6:05 AM. Once we arrived at the base of Pacaya, Kevin, our guide, was there to greet us. He was the best! We learned a lot about the Pacaya and the surrounding volcanoes. He was so knowledgeable! Marshmallow and Pepe followed us for awhile and we eventually gave in to their assistance (the altitude is no joke!) However, Marshmallow and Pepe only took us as far as the volcanic rock. So we did do some hiking after all! We roasted marshmallows and enjoyed the view. It was early so we had the whole mountain to ourselves (except for the dogs and the guys cooking the pizza). When we were done Marcos was their to pick us up and take us back the hotel in Antigua. Everything ran so smoothly, especially having booked it at the last minute.

This rating is based on two separate experiences within the tour. Our experience with the overall communication and driver was different from our experience with our hiking guide.
On the day of the hike, we were told via Whatsapp that other people would be joining us. When we responded querying why, as this was a private tour, we were told that it was just a question and that they would not have the other people join us, instead they would be taken on a separate tour. My spouse and I chalked it up to a potential language communication error (as they texted it as a statement rather than a question) and continued to look forward to the tour.
When it was time for pick-up, we waited for the driver by the lobby of our hotel. After communicating via WhatsApp, we found out that the driver was waiting for us outside our hotel gate. When we immediately went to meet the driver there, he seemed rather annoyed with us. His demeanour made it seem like we were inconveniencing him, and it made us feel uncomfortable.
Overall, he was a good driver and got us there and back safely.
Limber, our hiking guide, was absolutely wonderful. He met us on arrival at the hiking base and walked us through what we would be doing. We opted for one horse initially and then took a second horse when needed. The horses and horse guides were also great. Limber gave some great insight into the volcano and answered all of our questions with ease. He really turned the trip around for us and made it a wonderful and positive experience.

This is not an easy climb. I thought we were in good shape, but only 1 of the 4 of us made it to the top without hailing a taxi (horses available for an extra fee). If you have issues with altitudes, you may want to consider signing up for the horseback riding tour from the onset. It is definitely cold and windy at the top. Bring layers, water, and snacks.

If you’re trying to climb Pacaya, use this tour! Efficient and private pick up from your hotel- our driver was there on time. When you get to the park (about 80 minutes from Antigua) the driver will let you off and you will meet your tour guide. We had Kevin- who was fantastic. You pay per person for the park entrance fee when you get there (note it is cash only!). The driver waits for you until you’re done your hike in the parking lot. Very easy and efficient!

Great private tour! We had a driver to and from Pacaya, and a hiking guide who spoke great English. He was very professional and helpful. We learned a lot about the volcano and the area. Quite a workout but very enjoyable.

Our guide Danny was amazing!! I recommend taking this tour. The people who make all of the money off these people that drive and hike you up there are terrible and should be ashamed of what they do for a living.

The quality of the service very good very happy the guide is knowledgeable. Beautiful sceneries and safe

The hike was not too hard to complete but the altitude change did make it harder than normal. Our tour guide was friendly, helpful, and shy. He was very patient when my friend and I needed to take breaks to adjest to altidue changes. Overall, the hike went well.
One major complaint is about the men offering horseback riding "in case we get tired". At the beginning of the hike, as we were going up the cobblestone pathway, the 3 men (and 3 horses) trailed very closely behind us. As we were getting tired, they were taunting us by shouting "Uber", "taxi", and "ambulance". Our tour guide said they were following for emergencies but once we told the men that we felt uncomfortable with the horses being directly on our heels, we asked them to stop. They went away. Be aware of this and nip it in the bud.

We were staying outside of Antigua and our driver, Rene, met us at the agreed upon location, right on time. The car was clean and Rene was so nice. Our tour guide, Limba, was awesome. We stopped along the way for Limba to show us plants, berries, baby birds, beetles, and more. The views of Volcanoe Pacaya were amazing!! Truly an incredible place to experience. We also got to roast marshmallows on the heat from the old lava. The Lava Shop had beautiful handmade souvenirs that were more than reasonably priced. And to top it all off, after I left my phone in Rene's car - he met us in Antigua to return my phone. Wonderful tour and even more wonderful people.

The tour was amazing. We got picked up at 6am by a friendly driver Antonio and drove the the Pacaya (1 hour+). There we met our tour guide Kevin who speaks both Spanish ans English and started hiking. We took the path through the forest, it was a moderate hike. Kevin answered all of questions and talked about the surroundings. Overall, we hiked at our pace and the experience Itself was amazing.

The tour was fantastic! Driver was on time and nice to talk to. We took horses most of the way up which was fun! We hit the lava store which was cool then we were the first to get to the area where they cook pizza! We ordered a pizza and sat and watched the other volcano erupt in the distance. We also got to roast marshmallows. There were friendly dogs all around that we played with. After some time chillin and eating pizza, we headed back down, without using the horses this time. The guide was friendly and let us take our time at our own speed. Great experience!

We had a blast on this trip! Don’t miss the yummy pizza Pacaya at the top! Fun tour and Leonel, our guide, was wonderful. Also our driver Rene was really nice and stopped on the way for us to take pictures!

The tour was great, our guide Kevin was fantastic, the views are incredible, just make sure to bring a jacket. Pizza and marshmallows were great.
Dutch_s, Dec 2023
Our guide was incredibly courteous, knowledgeable, and focused on our safety. He worked at our pace (which started off a bit slow thanks to be a former first responder whose lungs were not up to the task initially.) Once we hit our stride, we really got to see some amazing views, and even "skiied" on the way down (once he realized we could take it to the next level. Be prepared to hike a long distance on sand uphill, which is no easy task. Bring plenty of water and dont try to do more than you think you can! The journey TO the volcano from Antigua is an adventure on its own!

We are a family of 5 who took the private Pacaya tour. Our driver was 20 minutes late - arriving at 06:20, not 6 am. We had to call the company and remind them we were waiting. When we got there it seemed our driver just randomly hired a guide who was standing there…. Our “guide” just walked with us up and down…we learned 0 about the volcanoes or anything. I’ve never had a less engaged guide for any tour. My husband is fluent in Spanish, so the language barrier was not an issue. Our guide also “forgot” the marshmallows to roast at the top which was a huge disappointment for our kids. On the way down we took a few short cuts (I guess to speed us up) and I heard the guide tell the driver we took so long because we got a pizza. Basically we paid $240 USD for a driver and for a random guy to walk up and down with us. We could have gotten a taxi, paid the entrance fee, and hiked ourselves just as easy and way cheaper. We are very disappointed with the whole thing. It was very disorganized and it seemed like the company was put out by our booking. I would not recommend.

We deeply regret the 20 minute setback, their reservation was for 4 people, not 5. as we otherwise only offer a bag of marshmallows. Effectively our driver always has the contact via telephone with our guide for coordination, we will take letters on the matter and also invite you to read our other comments

Our driver was on time and punctual. We were the first at the volcano. Our tour guide, Limber was very friendly and knowledgeable. We took the horses halfway up and walked all the way down. The pizza was fantastic! I highly recommend this tour!

No refund or cancelation due to unsafe weather conditions. Arrived to volcano with heavy rain and lightning.

Thank you for your brief comment, the forces of nature are constant, and as you well say, the service was provided until you returned to your place of initiation, Greetings and I invite you to read the rest the other comments.

Do not miss out on this opportunity! We enjoyed watching both, Pacaya and a nearby volcano 🌋 smoke. We had delicious pizza on the volcano cooked from the hot crater. We rented horses for part of the trip up but it's also a great moderate to difficult hike. We learned about the area and Limber was our awesome guide!

Great experience! The guides and driver were very friendly and knowledgeable. Pizza at the top (Pizzza Pacaya) was delicious.
Ambroise_D, Sep 2022
It’s not a « private » tour at all and it’s basically a drive to the volcano - do it by yourself : it’s not complicated and much less expansive !

I had an amazing time! My tour guides were amazing. The whole experience was just awesome from the moment we got picked up to the moment we were dropped off.. I learned so much about my culture. Thank you so much!!!

The tour was excellent. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable. There was also the option to take a horse as well.

This was one of the more memorable experiences of our trip to Guatemala. The volcano is a must see. Pickup was smooth—it became a private trip since we were the only ones who booked that morning. The guide, Fausto, was friendly and spoke English. Would recommend them for others.

This was a beautiful hike with incredible views. The tour guide I had was very kind and knowledgeable and he made the experience very memorable for me, from joking around to offering marshmallows for roasting near the top. I highly recommend this hike and service!

Amazing. This was one of the best parts of my trip in Guatemala. The tour guide was amazing. He was so knowledgeable and patient with me. The hike up was more than I thought it would be, but I’m so happy that I did it. The beautiful views and roasting the marshmallows was an extra touch too! Definitely book this tour. It is a must!
Rachel_M, Apr 2021
This tour was amazing! Definitely a moderate hike with amazing views and close encounters with lava! The reason I only gave it 3 stars is because my tour guide didn’t speak ANY English, when I signed up for an English guide. It was super frustrating that I couldn’t understand the majority of what he was saying
