Itineraries for Your Trip to Shanghai
3 Days in Shanghai for First Timers
As one of the largest and most cosmopolitan cities in China, Shanghai offers an overwhelming number of options for visitors and locals alike, from the iconic Bund waterfront and futuristic skyscrapers to classic temples and world-class museums.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have studied, worked, and lived in Shanghai at various times over the course of a decade. During that time, I’ve explored its far-flung neighborhoods, discovered hidden gems, including restaurants and bars, and visited the must-see landmarks. To help you make the most of your time, see the best of the city, and navigate, here’s my itinerary for first-time visitors to Shanghai.
Expect all four seasons, and hot, humid summers. Pack layers and an umbrella.
If you only have time for one thing, make it the Bund waterfront area.
Many top Shanghai landmarks are centrally located. Start in Pudong for panoramic views from the Oriental Pearl Tower or Shanghai Tower. Then head across the river (by taxi, ferry, metro, or sightseeing tunnel) to the Bund. Afterwards, walk along Nanjing Road towards People’s Square. You can then walk to Yuyuan Garden and City God Temple. Or opt for a private tour with transport or hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus tour.
The Shanghai skyline is a sight at night and best viewed on a Huangpu River Cruise. Combine it with dinner for a full experience.
Start the day sampling Shanghai breakfast dishes, like scallion pancakes and jianbing (Chinese crepes), available at many street stalls. Xiao long bao soup dumplings are another must. Join a food tour in the French Concession to see top sights in the charming neighborhood.
Spend time at the Shanghai Museum or another of the city's art-focused stops, such as M50 Creative Park or the quirky Propaganda Poster Art Center. Shoppers can try a bespoke tour. At night, enjoy jazz at the Fairmont Peace Hotel or drinks at a Bund rooftop bar. Huaihai Road and Hengshan Road offer bar options.
On your last day, head out of town to visit one of the ancient water towns nearby, like Zhujiajiao, Tongli, or Zhouzhuang. Opt for a tour for a seamless experience that includes transport and a guide.
