What I didn’t know was that the city had so much more to offer, including more than enough substance to go with its style.
To enjoy this city as I did, it’s best to start with the basics, and Girona will do the rest. If you’re unsure what those are, follow this 2-day Girona itinerary for first timers to get started.
Evenings can get cool and even cold in Girona, so pack a jacket or coat to stay comfortable.
If you only have time for one thing, make it walking around Barri Vell, Girona’s captivating center.
The preserved Jewish Quarter is at the core of Girona’s historical center—it serves as the perfect place to start a Girona itinerary for first-time visitors. Take a guided walking tour of the neighborhood to trace the city’s history through this community, stopping at the Museum of Jewish History for even more details and context.
Following lunch, turn your attention to the wider old town area—it’s home to many other must-see attractions in Girona. Between visiting the mighty Girona Cathedral and admiring the colorful houses along the Onyar River, you’ll spot locations where Game of Thrones was filmed, including the impressive cathedral steps. Avid fans can book tours focused on destinations seen on the television show.
Muster a little more energy to head up to the Passeig de la Muralla, the medieval walls of Girona, to enjoy views of the city and watch the sunset. Afterwards, return to the maze of Barri Vell for drinks and tapas—or join a food tour to let an insider show you what Girona’s food and wine scene has to offer.
in a rush often miss. Across the river, Mercadal is a great place to explore if you’re interested in shopping or more modern architecture. It’s also home to the Museu del Cinema, with its shadow theater and vintage collection, and provides easy access to the leafy park avenues of Parc de la Devesa.
This afternoon, return to the old town to explore any of the attractions you may have missed on day one. Use your last evening in Girona to see what the Jewish Quarter looks like at night, by hopping between local bars to sample regional wines and beers. Then, cross the river and explore the venues around Placa de la Independencia before settling in for a sumptuous meal at one of its many restaurants.
