1 Day in Capri for First Timers

Curated by Gianmaria Franchinia travel writer who grew up a short ferry ride from Capri in Naples.

During the travel season, ferries from Naples perpetually fill with day trippers searching for a dose of alluring Capri, the smallest and most sophisticated of the three islands in the Bay of Naples (Golfo di Napoli). When I visit the area at least once a year, I usually make the trip, too.

There’s enough sublime beauty in this slice of Southern Italian paradise to make quick visits worthwhile, from palatial villas draped with bougainvillea to divine sea views around every corner. If you don't mind following the day-tripping crowds, spending one day in Capri is enough to see what the fuss is about. Here’s how to live out your Italian island dream in just one day.

If you only have time for one thing, make it viewing the Faraglioni sea stacks from the Gardens of Augustus.

Capri is breezy but warm—during summer and early fall it’s almost always beach weather, or hotter.

Morning

After arrival at the Marina Grande, hold off on taking the funicular up to Piazza Umberto I in the town of Capri, and get on the water instead. Private boat tours can help you avoid the throngs of tourists and ensure that you can see the multiple sea caves Capri is known for, such as the White Grotto (Grotta Bianca), Green Grotto (Grotta Verde), and Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra). When planning, keep in mind that the latter is very popular and requires admission fees to visit.

Afternoon

If you missed (or just passed by) the Blue Grotto this morning, consider a small-group tour that includes your entry ticket, including time for shopping and lunch in Piazzetta di Capri. From the Marina Grande, take the 4-minute ride on the funicular up to Capri town, catching views of the port area below. From Piazza Umberto I at the top, you’re within walking distance of many highlights, such as the Gardens of Augustus (Giardini di Augusto), with scenic terraces overlooking the Faraglioni sea stacks.

Night

Round out your visit by exploring the seafood-heavy island cuisine of Capri town. Wander the too-cute side streets from the pedestrian-friendly Piazzetta di Capri and you'll find a suitable restaurant soon enough, or try a cooking class if the restaurant scene wears thin. Sunset cruises are an atmospheric way to say goodbye to Capri—just remember the funicular back to the port stops running after 10pm.
