Itineraries for Your Trip to Bayeux
2 Days in Bayeux for First Timers
Growing up with a second home in France, my family and I would regularly take the ferry from the UK, arriving at nearby Cherbourg or Caen, and spending a night or two in Normandy before continuing down to the Vendée. The picturesque medieval town of Bayeux, with its half-timbered buildings and world-renowned tapestry, made its way onto our itinerary more than once.
Two days in Bayeux gives you plenty of time to visit the riverside town, as well as explore the surrounding countryside and the nearby D-Day beaches. If you’re looking for the best things to do in Bayeux for first timers, this itinerary offers plenty of options.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a coast-to-countryside tour of Normandy.
Staying inland in Bayeux means you’ll be sheltered from the crisp coastal winds.
Mornings in Bayeux are an ideal time for an e-bike ride, especially in the warm summer months, so saddle up for a scenic cycle along the coast and through the beautiful Normandy countryside. Stop along the way to sample delicious Norman specialties, including fresh oysters, camembert cheese, and cider.
Then, in the afternoon, take in all of the must-see attractions in Bayeux Old Town on a walking tour, including Bayeux Cathedral, the Bayeux War Cemetery, and the Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy. After admiring the views along the Aure River, pay a visit to the Lace Conservatory to discover Bayeux’s most celebrated handicraft.
If you’re visiting in summer, one of the best times to visit the Bayeux Tapestry is in the early evening—the final time slots of the day are usually less crowded. Ask to include it in a private tour of Bayeux. Afterward, book a table at a riverside restaurant to sample local dishes, such as pork à la Normande (with a creamy, cider sauce).
Day trips from Bayeux typically visit the UNESCO–listed island monastery of Mont-Saint-Michel or the nearby cities of Rouen and Caen. If you’ve only got time for one today, opt for a tour that explores Normandy’s World War II sites, which include the D-Day beaches of Omaha and Utah, and the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial.
Visiting the D-Day beaches with a guide provides important historical context, but for greater insight, there are a number of museums worth visiting this afternoon. Most notable are the D-Day Landing Museum of Utah Beach and the Arromanches 360 cinema, which shows never-before-seen archive footage. Prebook your tickets to avoid waiting in line.
If you’ve still got energy to spare, the golden hour before sunset is a perfect time for a cycle along the Aude River. Back in town, wrap up your 2-day Bayeux itinerary by watching the summer lightshow at Bayeux Cathedral or attending the atmospheric night market (select evenings only) in the town center.
