The clear lagoon of Tahaa and Raiatea in the Society Islands, French Polynesia

Things to do in  Raiatea

Sacred and serene

Lush, towering, and full of history, Raiatea is one of the pearls of the South Pacific. It’s the second-largest island in French Polynesia’s Society Islands, and, unlike the other islands in the archipelago, Raiatea is sheltered by a barrier reef and fed by a river. Within Raiatea’s tropical landscape, visitors will find plenty of opportunities to learn about the island’s culture. Things to do on Raiatea include visiting the site of the sacred Marae Taputapuātea, taking a tour of the Faaroa River, and hiking the dramatic peak of Mount Temehani.

When to visit

Weather in the South Pacific is divided into the wet season and the dry season, with the months between November and April seeing the bulk of the rain. The islands dry out and welcome the sun from June to August, but that also makes for a busier travel season. Visit Raiatea in May or September for temperate weather and quieter trails.

Getting around

There are taxis in the main town of Uturoa, but getting around Raiatea is much easier if you have your own car. They can be rented at the Raiatea Airport or in town. Otherwise, you can opt for tours that include transport and a guide to help you navigate. Make sure to take a kayak trip at some point so you can explore the shady bends of the Faaroa River.

Traveler tips

Hiking to the peak of Mount Temehani is a challenge, but it’s well worth the effort. While you can go alone, this is a good activity to do with a guide as the trail is not well signposted. The approximately 11-mile (18-kilometer) trail takes you through dense jungles and overlooks the sea far below. The highlight of the hike is the chance to spot the tiare apetahi—a delicate flower that only grows on Mount Temehani. Picking them is banned, but their perfume fills the air.
