One of New York City’s most recognizable skyscrapers, the Chrysler Building is considered a masterpiece of art deco architecture, thanks to its ornate steel crown and spire. Two stone lions guard the front of the main branch of the New York Public Library, an imposing Beaux Arts structure known as the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. This is one of the closest ways to experience the natural wonder, and feels like the inside of a tropical storm, with torrents of water and winds of up to 68 mph (109 kph). Safe to say, you should prepare to get wet.

Grand Central Terminal (more commonly known as Grand Central Station) is a beaux arts gem in the heart of Manhattan. Much more than a train station, Grand Central is a slice of NYC history and a magnet for architecture buffs who swoon over its vaulted ceiling adorned with a turquoise and gold mural depicting the constellations of the zodiac, and the information booth’s 4-faced opal clock.

While security measures mean that the stock exchange is not open to the public, it is possible to experience the daily buzz of the financial district by planning your visit to coincide with the ringing of the morning bell (9:30am) or the closing bell (4pm).

Bryant Park, off bustling 42nd Street in Manhattan, encompasses nearly 10 acres (4 hectares) of green space in the middle of the city. Visitors will find historic monuments, benches, blooming flowers, and kiosks with vendors selling coffee and snacks. Whether you play a game of chess or take a nap on the grass, the park offers a fun and relaxing Midtown reprieve just blocks from Times Square.

A suspended viewing deck with glass walls, Edge NYC is one of Manhattan’s most dramatic lookout points. Jutting out over Hudson Yards in Manhattan’s west side, the Edge’s SkyDeck offers 360-degree views and even an area with a see-through glass floor—peer down 100 stories if you dare. Visitors are drawn to the attraction not only for the unforgettable views but also for the Champagne bar, which offers a range of signature cocktails.

The Central Park Zoo is among the country’s oldest municipal zoos and one of the most-visited spots in the famous New York City green space. Located in the southeastern corner of Central Park, the zoo is home to more than 130 animal species, including red pandas, snow leopards, tufted puffins, and ruffed lemurs. Young visitors can also explore the Tisch Children’s Zoo, a petting zoo with farm animals.

An abandoned elevated railway track converted into a park, the High Line is a Manhattan green space beloved by locals and visitors alike. Originally a passenger ship terminal, it’s now a sports and entertainment hub with ice skating, bowling, rock climbing, golf, and field sports—making it a great place to come for families and friends. There are also TV production facilities and event spaces.

One of three major bridges that connect Manhattan to Brooklyn—alongside the Brooklyn Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge—the Manhattan Bridge is a key part of the New York City skyline. Built in 1909 and now on the National Register of Historic Places, the suspension bridge today carries more than 450,000 commuters across the East River by subway, car, bike, and on foot. It’s a popular landmark on Dumbo walking and photography tours.

Formerly known as the World Financial Center, this mixed-use waterfront complex pairs office space with upscale retail and restaurant options. Renovations after the September 11 attacks upgraded Brookfield Place to a new level of splendor, making it one of Lower Manhattan’s most popular dining and entertainment destinations.
