A historical landmark and a working rum distillery, Mauritius’ St. Aubin House & Sugar Estate links the island’s colonial past to its contemporary present. Centered on an 1819 plantation house with National Heritage Site status, the estate teaches visitors about rum history and production, hosts tastings, and welcomes diners to its traditional restaurant.

The oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Mauritius was built in 1770 and stretches over some 91 acres (37 hectares). It's known for its big pond of giant water lilies. Its lush gardens, including ebony trees and sugar cane, are a reminder of the nation’s colonial influences.

The Black River District (Rivière Noire)—the third largest district by area in Mauritius—is home to one of the smallest populations in the country. But its beautiful rural landscapes, dry climate, and outdoor activities like fishing and hiking make it a favorite among travelers. The district derives its name mainly from the grayish and black basaltic mountainous rocks throughout the region.
