Since opening in 1905, the baroque-style Aldwych Theatre has hosted a wide range of productions, from Shakespearean plays to the first London staging of A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by none other than Laurence Olivier and starring Vivien Leigh, star of Gone With The Wind. These days, the 1,200-seat auditorium hosts grand musicals nearly every night of the week.

Handel & Hendrix in London celebrates the life and work of two legendary musicians: 20th-century guitar god Jimi Hendrix and 18th-century baroque composer George Frideric Handel. While the artists may have lived 200 years apart, they occupied side-by-side Mayfair townhouses, which have been converted into a museum featuring period interiors and musical artifacts.

This stately red-brick mansion was the country home of one of Britain’s most lionized leaders, Sir Winston Churchill. The World War II prime minister purchased the property in 1922 and spent much of his retirement here. Little has changed since then, and visitors will find Churchill memorabilia and personal belongings scattered throughout.

Best known as the Neasden Temple, BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir London is one of Europe’s first traditional Hindu temples, making it a significant place of worship for the Hindu community, and a must-see architectural wonder for everyone else. The gleaming white masterpiece—made with Bulgarian limestone, and Italian and Indian marble—was constructed in India, then shipped to England to be reassembled like a jigsaw by thousands of volunteers. No structural steel was used; instead, it was constructed by traditional Hindu architectural methods and a labor of love.

Cartoons, caricatures, and comic art fill the space of this charitable museum, just minutes away from the hubbub of Oxford Circus. The colorful site focuses on making its art exhibitions available to a wide audience, with events, educational workshops, and competitions. In particular, the museum is working to welcome children with autism spectrum conditions and sensory-processing differences, by providing various neurodiversity accommodations.

Often referred to as the “Home of Cricket”, Lord’s Cricket Ground is a world-renowned sporting arena that hosts regular cricket matches and international test fixtures. Discover the unexpectedly fascinating world of hand fans at the Fan Museum in Greenwich, London—the first museum of its kind, dedicated entirely to fans. Set in a pair of Grade–II listed townhouses, the museum houses more than 7,000 objects, including fans dating as far back as the 11th century. Alongside the beautifully crafted fans, there’s plenty to see and learn about here, including the social history of these seemingly inconsequential accessories.

Housed in a Grade II-listed Georgian property, the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art showcases the work of early 20th-century Italian artists such as Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Mario Sironi, and Modigliani. It is the only museum in Britain dedicated entirely to modern Italian artworks. Six galleries, a café, a bookshop, a library, and a garden offer a tranquil getaway from bustling Islington.

The opulent Lyric Theatre is the oldest surviving theatre on London’s iconic Shaftesbury Avenue. With its chandeliers, gold detailing, and capacity of just under 1,000 seats, it offers a more intimate West End experience than many larger venues. Despite its size, the Lyric has hosted a range of hit productions over the years, including Hadestown (beginning in 2024), Cabaret, How the Other Half Loves, Blood Brothers, and the long-running Thriller Live.

Officially branded the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham Stadium—or “Twickers”, as it’s sometimes known—takes its name from the southwest London borough in which it’s found. For most people, it’s all about rugby, as the home stadium for the national team and one of the world’s largest rugby union stadiums, with a capacity for some 82,000 spectators. The site also hosts American football NFL games, music concerts, and conferences.

Located at the north end of London’s Regent’s Park, the grassy slopes of Primrose Hill offer walking trails and benches, making it the perfect place to enjoy a stroll or a picnic. This world-renowned production has broken records as being one of the longest-running musicals in history.

Gabriel’s Wharf is an arty riverside hub of independent boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and street food stalls. In London’s South Bank area, the enclave offers a one-stop shop for eating, drinking, and browsing, with a creative character that makes it stand out from the chain-store dominated shopping areas elsewhere in London.

One of London’s best-known markets, Brick Lane Market is a paradise for bargain hunters and foodies alike. With vintage treasures, handmade goods, street food stalls, and plenty of unusual surprises, it’s always a fun place to soak up the buzz of the East End. The market is divided into distinct sections, including the Upmarket for global cuisine, the Backyard Market for arts and crafts, and the Tea Rooms for antiques.

Dating back to 1897, His Majesty’s Theatre is a Grade II–listed building with opulent interiors and classic Victorian design influenced by French Renaissance style. With a capacity of over 1,200, it has hosted many plays and musicals over the years, including West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof. Since 1986, it has been the West End home of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.

This magnificent building, dating back to 1905, was known as the Strand Theatre until 2005. With its grand architecture and theatrical legacy, it’s a cherished part of London’s West End. Over the years, the Novello Theatre has hosted star-studded premieres of hit musicals, but it’s best known as the London home of Mamma Mia!, where audiences have sung along to the beloved ABBA anthems for over a decade.

The Duchess Theatre—with a capacity of around 500 seats—is one of the smallest West End theaters that has a proscenium arch (that’s the traditional “picture frame” style stage that separates performers from the audience). Dating back to 1929, this historically and architecturally interesting theater hosts plays in an intimate setting. Over the years, it has welcomed a range of productions, from serious dramas to long-running comedies such as The Play That Goes Wrong.

The traditional blue police box that stands at the entrance to Earl’s Court station is one of the last still standing in London. But this nostalgic landmark is much more than just a police box: for fans of the classic British TV series Doctor Who, it’s a pop culture phenomenon—the fictional time machine used by the Time Lord to travel between dimensions known as the TARDIS.

The Ambassadors Theatre may be small, with just 446 seats, but it still hosts major plays and musicals and is a Grade II listed venue—meaning it has been designated to hold historical or architectural interest. Past productions have included Stomp and The Mousetrap, while more recently, it’s been home to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This cozy West End theatre attracts visitors for both its intimate atmosphere and its historic architecture.

The Criterion Theatre, dating back to 1870, is an independent West End venue with an intimate capacity of just 588 seats. Although it’s among the smaller theaters in the area, its Grade II-listed architecture (meaning it’s of special interest) and prime Piccadilly Circus location make it popular with both tourists and local theater lovers alike. The theater hosts a variety of productions, including plays, comedies, melodramas, and musicals such as The 39 Steps and Titaníque.

As London’s third-busiest airport, after Heathrow and Gatwick, London Stansted sees up to 24 million passengers pass through its terminals each year. As well as being a major base for low-cost carrier Ryanair, Stansted serves over 170 destinations all around Europe, as well as select destinations in North Africa, Central America, and the United States.

Gatwick Airport (LGW) is one of six international airports to serve the city of London and is second in size only to Heathrow Airport. A major transport hub, London Gatwick has two terminals and welcomes more than 40 million passengers every year, accommodating flights to and from some 200 global destinations.

A rolling expanse of grass studded with ancient woodland and roaming deer, Bushy Park sits in the far southwest of London, out near Hampton Court Palace. Dating back to Tudor times, it’s the second largest of London’s Royal Parks, with fountains, water gardens, and a woodland garden, as well as a playground, cafés, and sports facilities.

Being the largest of London’s eight Royal Parks is just one of the many accolades that the 17th-century Richmond Park boasts. This vast green space in the capital’s southwest is home to a wealth of wildlife, including a herd of over 600 red and fallow deer that roam the park and its ancient woodlands. Cycling and running trails, golf courses, a playground, and two gardens—the Isabella Plantation and Pembroke Lodge Gardens— are among the highlights.

An architectural icon and an ex-industrial artifact, London’s Battersea Power Station traces its history back nearly a century. Instantly recognizable for its four soaring chimneys, the key landmark along the Thames River has been reborn as a leisure destination. Today, it contains a high-end shopping mall, restaurants, accommodation, and other entertainment offerings.

One of three ancient Egyptian obelisks relocated to major Western cities—the others are in Paris and New York—Cleopatra’s Needle was gifted to the UK in the 19th century. After a perilous sea journey from Egypt, it was installed on London’s Victoria Embankment. (Despite the name, the landmark has no link to Cleopatra.) Visitors enjoy photo opportunities near the obelisk, with visible hieroglyphics as well as bronze sphinxes that guard the monument.

Clarence House dates back to the 19th century and is one of London’s key royal residences. It was home to Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip before her accession to the throne, and later to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. More recently, it has become the official residence of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. When open to the public, visitors can go on guided tours to see the elegant interiors and landscaped gardens.

Billed as the home of Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian, the Royal Observatory Greenwich is one of London’s major historical landmarks. Part of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site, the observatory was built by celebrated architect Christopher Wren in the 17th century. Today, it houses a planetarium, historical navigational tools, and one of the UK’s largest telescopes.
