When to get there

For the bluest skies, visit the Gulf of Thailand from January to March, when the archipelago’s relatively short monsoon season concludes. The shoulder season months of July and September also see good weather and fewer crowds. Koh Pha Ngan is world-renowned for its Full Moon Parties, which occur every month on the night before, of, and after the full moon—check the lunar calendar for the exact dates.

Getting around

Koh Samui is the only island in the Gulf of Thailand with an airport, so the only way to hop between the other islands is by ferry. Regular ferry services run between the largest of the islands. However, if you’re visiting smaller islands, you’ll likely need to take a speedboat or a long-tail boat. Be sure to book a boat ticket with transfers so you don’t need to travel to the port with your luggage.

Traveler tips

Often overlooked in favor of its larger and busier neighbors, Koh Mak is a postcard-perfect island between Koh Chang and Koh Kood. Its inland is densely packed with rubber plantations and coconut groves; however, its white-sand beaches offer a much quieter alternative to other Gulf of Thailand islands—they’re also home to a charming tableau of bamboo bungalows and traditional Thai restaurants serving spice and seafood in equal measure.
