Things to do in  Ko Pha Ngan

Island of smiles

Forever synonymous with the riotous Full Moon Parties that take place monthly at Haad Rin Beach, Ko Pha Ngan is Thailand's quintessential party island. But beyond the bucket cocktails and moonlit raves, there are plenty of things to do in Ko Pha Ngan to counteract the hedonism. Beloved by backpackers and digital nomads, this island escape has palm-studded beaches with azure waters, jungle-clad hinterlands, and spectacular snorkeling and scuba diving. Embrace your inner hippie with a beachside yoga class, then hike to a waterfall, visit a temple, or go beach-hopping.

When to visit

With balmy temperatures and warm waters year-round, Ko Pha Ngan is popular for a reason. The busiest times are the drier, less-humid months of November through February, when both crowds and prices soar, while the short rainy season lasts from late September through November. If your trip doesn't coincide with one of the famous Full Moon Parties, held each month in accordance with the full moon, don't worry—there are sometimes Half Moon and Black Moon Parties held throughout the month.

Getting around

The island's steep and winding roads are best traversed with two wheels, and you can rent a light motorcycle or scooter from several outlets around the island. If you're not experienced with a motorbike, rent a car or make the most of the many motorbike taxis and songthaews (shared taxis) that ply the coastal roads. It takes about 30 minutes to drive across the island, however, there are still a few beaches and bays only accessible by boat.

Traveler tips

Fringed with coconut trees and powder-soft white sands, Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) is only reachable on foot (about a 1.5-hour hike from Haad Khom Beach), by boat (long-tail boats or taxi boats take about 15 minutes from Chaloklum), or by 4-wheel drive. It's an idyllic spot for swimming and snorkeling, or you can stay the night at a beach bungalow. While you're there, tackle the 45-minute hike up to Bottle Beach Viewpoint for a magnificent ocean view.

Q:How long should I spend in Ko Pha Ngan?
A:

You can visit Ko Pha Ngan on a day trip—or an overnight visit if you're attending one of the Full Moon Parties—from neighboring Koh Tao or Koh Samui. However, you'll need 3–7 days to fully experience the island and enjoy beach-hopping, hiking, and visiting the temples and night market.
