Things to do in  Ko Chang

A top Thai treat

From spectacular diving to untouched beaches, jungle-clad waterfalls, and swoon-worthy sunsets, Ko Chang may be Thailand’s third-largest island, but it’s also long been one of its best-kept secrets. Also known as Elephant Island, thanks to its elephant-shaped headland, Ko Chang is a short hop from the Cambodian border. It walks the fine line between luxury and laid-back, with plenty of hidden highlights dotted between resorts and party areas. Some of the best things to do on Ko Chang include beach-hopping, exploring the Mu Ko Chang National Park, and boat-tripping to neighboring islands.

When to visit

The best time to visit Ko Chang is during the dry season—especially if you’re craving those picturesque paradise island vibes. The dry season in this part of Thailand runs between November and March, with December to February the busiest months. Aside from Songkran—one of the country’s biggest (and best) festivals celebrating Thai New Year every April—the shoulder seasons of March/April and October/November are usually slightly quieter while still offering decent weather.

Getting around

There are a few ways to get around Ko Chang, including songthaews (shared pickup truck taxis with benches in the back), private taxis, rental cars, and motorbikes/scooters. Songthaews are one of the easiest and most affordable ways to get around, offering fixed rates and fixed routes between popular destinations. Travelers can also walk, rent a bicycle, or even jump on a boat trip and cruise around the island’s many beaches.

Traveler tips

Most travelers to Ko Chang head straight to more populated areas like White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao) and Lonely Beach, best known for its backpacker party vibes. However, there are plenty of other places on the island to explore, including Klong Koi Beach, Klong Prao Beach, and Bang Bao. Mu Ko Chang National Park is also well worth a visit. While you can camp there, many visitors come on a day trip to hike the evergreen forest, see lush waterfalls, and snorkel or dive on the protected coral reefs.
