Overview

two awesome things: beautiful bike ride and deep dive into socialist urban planning

I had such an outstanding time on this tour with Alida! It's always such a pleasure to get to discover a new city by bike, and Zagreb was especially perfect in size for cycling. We rode through some of the green horseshoe parks, and I learned about the urban planning that took place during the late 19th century. Then we went over the Sava River, into "Nova Zagreb", to explore the completely different approach to urban planning on that side of the river. It's amazing to see where socialism has really yielded some highly functional urban design. I also really appreciated learning about the socialist years of Yugoslavia, and how Tito's approach to government differs from the current Croatian administration. As someone who is always curious and loves to hear how cities work, it was exceptionally valuable to hear my guide's, personal experiences with the city, and how the last few years of COVID and earthquakes has really shaped how the city operates. I'm so glad I was able to take this ride with blue bike tours while I was in Zagreb!

I was the only participant on the tour today so got to choose some of the tour. You get to see parts of the city that most tourists don’t see, together with lots of interesting info on how the city has developed in the past 40/50 years
