This was so much more than a cooking class, it was a rich cultural experience. We learned so much about Balinese culture, traditions, farming and village life from Dewa. My husband said it was one of the most meaningful tours we have ever done (in the 48 countries we have visited). Can't recommend this enough!
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Thank you so much for this incredible review. We are truly honored by your words, especially knowing how widely you have traveled. Hearing that this was one of the most meaningful tours you have experienced across 48 countries is something we do not take lightly.
We are so glad that your time with Dewa felt like more than just a cooking class and became a deeper cultural exchange. Learning about Balinese traditions, farming, and village life is such an important part of understanding the heart of the island, and Dewa will be so touched to know the experience resonated so strongly with you both.
Thank you for your enthusiastic recommendation. We would be delighted to welcome you again on another unforgettable experience in the future.
We were so impressed the living, harmony of life. It was very meaningful time with Dewa, his family and his village peoples.
This was the best cultural experience we had in Ubud. Dewa was so knowledgeable and generous with sharing his village and home with us. The meal was the best we had during our entire stay. I am so glad I booked this tour and cannot recommend Dewa enough.
Dewa was an amazing host and tour guide. He was very knowledgeable of the culture and the ingredients of the food! The food was pretty delicious! I would highly recommend booking this tour!
Dewa was AMAZING! My partner Rudy, and I were equally impressed. Everything about this adventure was positive. From the walk through the forest, extensive knowledge of culture, food and family- we were so delighted. Best experience we have had! We are so grateful and hope so many others can enjoy Dewa and his cooking class the way we did.
What a beautiful experience it was to be apart of this cooking adventure. Dewa, is very knowledagle and shared so much of the balinese history, culture, and spiritual wisdom with us. Dewa walked us through the jungle and rice fields finding exotic spices and plants showing us the way they grow food and live. The food was lovely and very tasty and his family we so kind and welcoming. Highly recommend if you want an authentic balinese experience!
This was not just a cooking class, it was a full cultural immersion into the authentic Bali. Dewa took us around his village and told us the story of his people, shared his way of life and introduce us to his family. It was an incredible experience, and the food we cooked was delicious. 100% recommend this fantastic human experience. I would definitely do it again 😊
This was an amazing experience!! Private tour with a local chef. You learn history and so much about using your local products to make amazing food. The chef does his class in his private home kitchen where you get to see how a typical Bali family lives!!! The food was fantastic
I have taken many cooking classes in my life, but this one was extra special. Dewa was a blessing. He is kind and so happy to share his culture. His home is lovely and everything was clean. We cooked a six course meal and it was delicious. Dewa gave me a very special notebook into which I wrote the recipes as we cooked. It is a treasured keepsake. If you want an incredible, authentic Balinese experience, this is it!
This was a great experience. Dewa was such a great teacher. He taught us so much about the balinese culture
This was a really enjoyable cooking class, with that little bit more. From the moment Dewa picked us up, he introduced us to the Balinese way of life. A quick car trip from our accomodation and soon we are walking through Dewa’s village, crossing rice paddies, and touring the entrepreneurial village recycling centre. A stop at the vegetable garden to harvest our lunch and onto his home to prepare and cook lunch with Dewa and his delightful family.
A true insight into Bali life, culture and religion. One of our best and memorable experiences in Bali.
Dewa was a wonderful host and was able to impart his love of his country, his deep understanding of Bali’s history, culture and a little of his calm accepting personality and values. He and his family made us feel welcome and with his direction we were able to create a wonderful feast and learn new recipes. Throughly enjoyable and would recommend this cooking adventure. Thank you Dewa for a wonderful day.
Fantastic experience, with a great insight into not only Balinese cooking but also there underlying culture. I would highly recommend this
Dewa the host was so knowledgeable and informative on the different herbs used, their medicinal as well as aromatic properties and shared knowledge of Buddhism Hinduism and animism and their influences. It was wonderful being in the village setting and learn about farming practices/cultural too. The class was so well organized and the food delicious. Plus I got to take away a little recipe book. Excellent and highlight.of trip.
Loved it didn't think I would like it, but I was the best thing I did in Bali.
Walked around the village, Dewa told us so much.
Dewa was so informative learnt so much in local cooking
A must do in Bali 10/5 stars 🌟
Our host, Dema, was a walking history book. We explored the community garden while he picked the herbs and vegetables for our lunch. We walked (wear comfortable shoes) along the streets of his village while he provided an amazing historical lesson. Once we reached his house, we were greeted by other community members. Dema explained the recipes (I wrote while my cousin chopped). You get to keep the book with the recipes in them. Overall, 10/10. Very good experience!!
Our driver picked us up and took us to his home. It was a traditional Balinese house in the beautiful countryside. All the ingredients we used were from his huge garden where he grew absolutely everything from lemongrass to bananas. His family were very friendly and showed us around their home set in a very rural tranquil setting. The food we cooked was amazing and we wrote down all the recipes to make the dishes again at home. It was a truly amazing experience to see Bali at its most authentic location. I would highly recommend this cooking class I can’t praise it enough.
What an incredible experience. This was so much more than a cooking class. We began with an extensive tour of Dewa’s village, lifestyle and culture. It was a wonderful history lesson as we walked through the village. We cooked 5 dishes and have the entire recipes to take home. I would say this was one of the top highlights to our two week trip to Bali.
Dewa was a brilliant host. Incredibly knowledgable about his culture and local traditions which almost made us foRget we were on a cooking class! He took us for a walk through the local streets, stopping to pick the fresh veg from the community garden that we were going to cook later on. He then introduced us to some of his family and showed us around his beautiful, traditional home. Finally we got to preparing the pastes and fresh veg and meat whilst recording the 5-6 recipes in a recyclable book made locally. We could not recommend more, thank you Dewa and family!
Excellent storytelling, great hospitality, nice people and most importantly, great food. Great atmosphere all around the place.
Our morning spent with Dewa at his home was by far the highlight of our trip.
We had a wonderful time learning to make a whole bunch of delicious traditional Balinese dishes, Dewa was an excellent teacher! He provided us with a notebook so that I could write down the recipes and repeat them at home.
We also learnt so much about Balinese culture and Dewa and his family's way of living, with a tour of the local area and gardens where they grow so many of their ingredients.
Even my husband, who generally doesn't enjoy cooking agreed it was the best thing we did!
What an incredible experience! Our gracious guide Dawa was wonderful, giving us a history of his village and Balinese culture. After we were picked up from our hotel in Ubud and greeted, we drove about 30 minutes to his village where we were dropped off to take a scenic walk through the lush landscape and neighborhood streets while teaching us about local customs. At his home, we learned about how they live; and how they cook traditionally for health and medicine and not for taste. Don’t be afraid because the food is really good. They just are not going to add lots of salt but just enough and all the ingredients are locally picked and fresh. I highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting a taste of tradition and an experience not very common nor mainstream.
If you are on the fence about doing this - please just book. This was the most enlightening experience we could've asked for from the moment we met Dewa. He took us through his local village while explaining that Balinese religion, and his wonderful positive outlook on life. Once we arrived at his home, we were given a beautiful handmade book from the local children, and shown how to make 6 different amazing foods. The class was very hands on, with the majority of the work being done by us. The meal was one of the best we've eaten in our lives and we will never forget this experience. 10/10 does not do this justice, please go ahead and book!
This was an amazing experience, and we would recommend this experience for everyone visiting Bali. It was personal and such a wonderful insight into the life of the Balinese through their cooking and the invitation into their family home which was just spectacular. Dewa was a most informative and welcoming host and we could not have thanked him enough for having us and sharing his life's story. One of his spirituality and how this foundation has made him the man he is today surrounded by his generations of family members. It is a must to all visitors to give you an understanding of their culture and their beautiful outlook on life. It was just beautiful. Thanks again DEWA - you are a inspirational and beautiful person.
Dewa and his driver picked us up from our hotel at 9am and drove to his village. He took us on a tour and explained about their life, religion and various types of foods that grow in the area. Then we went to his house where he and his family taught us step-by-step how to make 6 different dishes (everything from salad to mains to dessert). He even gave us a hand made book to write the recipes in! It was such a great day and we had the most peaceful lunch in his garden. Couldn’t recommend this class more!
Excellent experience to Balinese cooking. Dewa spent some time to first explain the agricultural model and its philosophy. We went through his garden to discover the typical Bali's plants. He welcomed us in his home to go through hands on cooking. Everyone was involved. We finally got to taste the 7 delicious recipes prepared. A unique experience to get closer to Balinese culture.
Dewa was such a loving and warm-hearted host. He taught us about his culture, gave us a tour of the wild vegetation that was used for our meals and opened his home to us to learn how to cook. We cooked 5 traditional Balinese meals that were easy to remake (I cook these regularly at home in New York) and were absolutely delicious. My sister and I had so much fun! We will be returning for a Part-2 cooking class to learn more.
This is the best cooking experience ever! Dewa started off by taking us through the gardens and forest where we get a better of understanding of the ingredients used for the cooking and the agriculture. And he further explained the culture, mentality and history of Bali and Balinese. Then he brought us back to his home, where he and his family taught us step by step the traditional cooking. Though it took us two hours to get there, but we had loads of fun! Highly recommend!
For our traditional Balinese cooking experience and garden tour in Ubud, we had the pleasure of having Dewa as our host. He drove us 15-20 minutes out from Ubud to his village.
This is an amazing experience for anyone interested in being immersed in traditional Balinese culture and way of life. Dewa takes you through a journey through the village explaining different plants and farming practices as well as the history of Bali throughout time and the basis of its religion and cultural heritage.
He explained about the Balinese simple way of life, living in harmony and balance with nature. We learnt many lessons in how we could improve our approach to our own lives and spirituality. After a peaceful walk, we looked at local tofu making and he showed us around his home.
Our cooking lesson was fun and easy to follow. We were given the recipes for the dishes we made. We were able to relax and enjoy the food we cooked. All very delicious. After the meal, he drove us back. Highly recommended, one of the best things we did in Ubud. This tour directly helps to support the small villages and the traditional Balinese way of life to continue. Highly recommend!
This was such a perfect way to spend our day. A drive into the hills from our accommodation to our meeting point was well worth it. Dewa was such an excellent teacher and guide who shared cultural information, stories and his cooking skills and knowledge with us. We came away feeling we had experienced something very special.
