This boat tour was an absolute delight. We had the opportunity to see an iceberg up close followed by the sighting of four whales nearby. The island with numerous puffins was something to see. The staff members were very friendly, informative and entertaining. What an adventure. Highly recommended boat tour.

Great experience with amazing crew staff. Explained the area, the birds, stayed close to the whales when they appeared. Best way to see the puffins, and other bird species. Bonus to see so many whales. Highly recommend!

What To Expect

This cruise departs from a private dock in Bay Bulls, about 25 minutes from downtown St. John's, Newfoundland.

At the dock, step aboard a catamaran equipped with a spacious viewing platform. The catamaran can accommodate up to 100 people on its outside decks, and its interior cabin can fit all passengers comfortably in the event of inclement weather. This is the only tour vessel in Newfoundland with such capacity.

Your captain navigates the boat to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, located at the end of Iceberg Alley. Icebergs drift along the coast from Greenland each spring and summer, and by the time they reach the reserve, they have been sculpted by the seas, sun, waves and shoreline to create incredible shapes.

On board, crew and naturalists share insight into the 2.5 million seabirds and the large populations of whales that call the reserve home. Peak whale watching takes place from mid-June through mid-August. (Your crew will do its best to make sure you see whales, but sightings are not guaranteed.) The guides and crew are equipped with wireless microphones and are happy to answer your questions or repeat information as you like.

The boat will stop along sheltered areas of the islands that comprise the Reserve. Snap photos of nesting sites and watch seabirds in their natural habitat. Some species you may see include Atlantic puffins, common murres, black guillemots, northern gannets, greater shearwaters and northern fulmars.

We had an amazing time on our Gatherall's Puffin & Whale Watch cruise! The whole experience was seamless and fun from the moment we arrived. The crew was super friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely excited to share what makes Newfoundland so special. We saw several humpback whales (up close!), and the puffin colony was amazing to see. The boat was spacious and comfortable, and the commentary added a lot to the trip. This was one of the absolute highlights of our visit to Newfoundland — highly recommended!

Great Solo Activity

Claudia_F, Jul 2026
It was so much fun! It wasn’t too long and the guides were very enthusiastic and entertaining. We were able to see a huge colony of different birds and a couple of whales. Bring a jacket since the wind is chilly. As a solo traveler, take advantage of the pickup/Dropoff ride service they offer! I made the expensive mistake of having to Uber to and lose my Uber reserve to come back. The staff were incredibly helpful and let me use their services back to St. John last minute for a partial fee. The location is a bit isolated and Uber isn’t common. Book in advance to take advantage of the early mornings

Dress warmly. I think the temperature dropped from 16 C to 6 C once we left the harbor. Great experience though. Lucky to see some playful humpback whales.

Worth the money

Worth every penny.....between the whales, puffins and crew this was an amazing experience! We saw two whales and they were even performing doing rolls and flapping fins

Best whale and bird tour ever

Randall_S, Jul 2026
This was the best whale watching tour we’ve ever been on! The puffin viewing was also fantastic. The tour staff were friendly and fun!

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Hi Randall, Thank you for such a fantastic review! I'm delighted to hear that you had such a memorable experience with us during peak whale season. Having whales decide to really put on a show along with the incredible sights and sounds of the millions of puffins and other seabirds is such an incredible experience. It's wonderful to know that both parts of the tour were highlights for you. I'm also glad you enjoyed spending time with the crew. They love sharing the wildlife, stories, and scenery of this coastline, and it's great to hear their friendly and fun approach helped make the day even better. We really appreciate you choosing to sail with us and hope you'll join us again if your travels ever bring you back to Newfoundland. Safe travels, Claire

Great whale watching experience.

Shelley_J, Jul 2026
Despite the cold day, we enjoyed our whale and puffin experience. We saw many puffins and four humpback whales. Our guides were informative, entertaining.

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Hi Shelley, Thank you so much for your lovely review! I’m really glad you joined us even with the chilly weather, you gotta make the most of those “bundle up and go anyway” days. Often, they turn out to be some of the most memorable ones on the water! It sounds like you were rewarded with a great mix of sightings too: plenty of puffins and four humpback whales is a fantastic day out here in peak whale season! I’m also happy to hear the crew helped make the experience enjoyable for you. They do their best to keep things both informative and fun, even when the wind has a bit of bite to it. We truly appreciate you sailing with us and sharing your experience. Hopefully we’ll see you back on board again for another Newfoundland adventure someday! Warm regards, Claire

So many whales!

Kathryn_G, Jul 2026
Super fun! The captain and crew were great. We saw ten whales and so many birds. The gift shop had plenty of cute options. Don’t make the mistake I did and Uber out there—it’ll be a challenge to get back.

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Hi Kathryn, Thank you so much for your lovely review! I’m so glad you had a super fun day with us and got to see so much wildlife! TEN HUMPBACKS is an incredible outing, and the puffins and seabirds always make for a spectacular show along the islands. It’s also great to hear you enjoyed the crew and had a browse through the gift shop. We try to make it a nice experience from start to finish, both on the water and back on shore. Plus its always nice to showcase and support the many talented artists around our province! Thank you for the helpful note about transportation. We always recommend using our shuttle add on if guests do not have access to their own transportation. Especially for guests coming from St. John’s, just to make things as smooth as possible after the tour. Plus then you can have a beer or two, sit back, relax, and let us do all the work! 😉 We really appreciate you joining us and sharing your experience. Hope to see you back on the water again someday! Warm regards, Claire

Great trip!

A fun morning seeing whales, gulls, and puffins and learning a few things about them too. Staff were knowledgeable and friendly!

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Hey Julie, I'm so glad you had a fun morning with us! It sounds like you got a little bit of everything—whales, puffins, gulls, and hopefully a few interesting facts to take home with you as well. One of my favourite things about these tours is watching guests discover just how much wildlife is packed into this little corner of Newfoundland. I'll be sure to pass your kind words along to the crew. They love sharing what they know and helping guests make the most of every sighting. Thanks for joining us, and for taking the time to leave a review. I hope we'll see you on board again someday! Warm regards, Claire

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Hi there, Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re really glad you had such a fun time on board, even on a grey foggy day in Newfoundland. I always find that the best wildlife moments happen in all kinds of weather - the whales and seabirds don't mind getting wet. 😉 It’s great to hear the crew kept things lively with jokes and a bit of singing along the way. As a family-run business, we’re very proud of our team, and it means a lot to hear that their knowledge, humour, and effort to find wildlife helped make your day special. It was great. We had multiple sightings of whales. The crew was determined for everyone to have a chance to see the whales. Enjoyed the crew singing. Couldn’t believe how many birds were on the island!! It was a wonderful experience. Beautiful calm day!

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Hi Jennifer, Thank you so much for your lovely review! We’re really glad to hear you had such a great day on the water and that the whales made multiple appearances for you! Any time spent out on the water is so special, especially when Mother Nature really turns it on like that. Our crew work hard to give everyone on board a chance to enjoy the sightings of whatever we see. It’s also great to know you enjoyed the singing on board and had time to take in the incredible bird activity on the island. The sheer number of seabirds out there is always something that surprises people, even on the calm, beautiful days like you had. Our family really appreciates you taking the time to share your experience. We’re so glad you enjoyed it and hope to welcome you aboard again someday. Warm regards, Claire

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It’s wonderful to hear that you felt so safe and comfortable aboard the Gaffer VI. A smooth, stable ride really does make it easier to sit back and enjoy the incredible wildlife around us. I'm also delighted that our crew made such a strong impression and helped bring the experience to life with their knowledge, friendliness, and energy. What a day on the water, three whales putting on a show for an extended period of time is so exciting and a special treat. The Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is such a special place with millions of seabirds including the cutest puffins (although I may be a little biased). I’m really glad the highlights of the trip, the wildlife, and the crew still made it an enjoyable outing overall. Thank you for joining us aboard and taking the time to share your review. Safe travels, Claire

It is such an incredible place, I love watching all of those beautiful puffins flying and diving around! Congratulations on becoming an honorary Newfoundlander! There's no better place to do it than on the water surrounded by the fresh salt air and stunning coastline. Thanks again for choosing to sail with our family, we'd love to welcome you back aboard again the next time you're back in Newfoundland. Safe travels, Claire

Fun day seeing puffins and whales.

Mary_D, Jun 2026
Loved that our guides were so fun and educational. One guide sang us as we left the dock and again when we re-entered. We aw lots of puffins and whales. Also, the owner, Mary Ann, is absolutely charming.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Hi Mary, Thank you so much for your lovely review! It’s great to hear you had such a fun day out with us and enjoyed both the puffins and the whales. There’s nothing quite like seeing those moments unfold on the water, and we’re so glad you got to experience it all. I’m especially happy to hear the guides made the trip both fun and educational, and I love that the guides singing perfectly tied the trip together. They love getting to share their culture through song with our guests. As a family-run business, that warmth and personality is something we really value, so your kind words about the team (and Rosemary!) mean a great deal. I’ll be sure to pass that along. Thanks again for joining us, and we hope to welcome you aboard again someday. Warm regards, Claire

Five-Star Experience on the Water

Gina_S, Jun 2026
Friendly and knowledgeable staff! Got “screeched-in” on the boat. Unfortunately to whales but we saw plenty of different bird species including the puffin.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Hi Gina! Thank you for the wonderful review! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed your time with our friendly and knowledgeable family and crew. I'm so happy you had the chance to get Screeched In right on the boat. That's such an authentic Newfoundland experience and always a highlight for many of our guests! It sounds like you also had a fantastic opportunity to see the incredible birdlife that calls the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve home, including our famous Atlantic Puffins. Isn't it incredible!? While the whales didn't make an appearance during your particular tour, I'm delighted to hear that it was still a five-star experience. That's something we're especially proud of, because while we can't control what wildlife chooses to do on any given day, we can ensure our guests have a memorable, fun, and authentic Newfoundland experience from start to finish. Thank you for joining us aboard, and we hope the whales decide to join the adventure next time! Long may yer big jib draw, Claire

This was a very well organized outing, with informative and enjoyable commentary, the occasional song and joke from the team, and sightings that proved as spectacular as one could have wished.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Hi Roberto, Thank you for the wonderful review! I'm so happy to hear the day delivered everything you could have wished for. From the wildlife sightings to the stories, songs, and a few laughs along the way, it sounds like you experienced a little bit of everything that makes Newfoundland special. Our crew loves sharing their knowledge, local culture, and sense of humour, so it's great to know those touches helped make the trip even more enjoyable. Thank you for joining us, and we hope to welcome you back aboard for another spectacular adventure someday! Safe travels until next time, Claire

Service was great. Staff...

Shabana_M, Jun 2026
Service was great. Staff was friendly. Unfortunately there was rain and fog so we didn’t see any whales. But the tour was still great.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Hi Shaban, Thank you for your sweet review! What stands out most to me is that despite the rain, fog, and elusive whales on that particular trip, you still had a great time. I think that speaks volumes about the experience and our crew. So much of what we do depends on nature. We can't control the weather, sea conditions, or whether wildlife decides to make an appearance. What we can control is the quality of the experience, the friendliness of our team, and the effort we put into making every trip enjoyable, no matter what the Atlantic throws our way. I'm delighted to hear our staff helped make the tour memorable despite the challenging conditions. While the whales didn't cooperate that day, it's wonderful to know you still left with positive memories of your time on the water. Thank you for joining us, and hopefully next time you'll get the full Newfoundland experience with whales, sunshine, fog, and maybe all four seasons in a single afternoon! Safe travels, Claire

Thick fog equals no whales

Nicole_M, Jun 2026
Be prepared to be disappointed. I was hoping so badly to see some whales and no luck. Puffens were cool but couldn’t get that close for decent pictures. You would have to have better lenses and not just your phone.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Hi Nicole, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed not to see whales during your tour. We completely understand that many visitors come hoping for a whale encounter, and it can be frustrating when nature doesn't cooperate. That said, we never guarantee whale sightings, as wildlife is just that, wild. The excitement of whale watching comes from the unpredictability, and unfortunately there are days when the whales simply choose to be elsewhere. While your tour happened to be one of those departures where whales chose to not be within our area at the time of sailing, we've actually been seeing whales on the vast majority of our trips this season. We certainly understand the disappointment of missing a whale sighting, but we feel a review based solely on the behaviour of wild animals does not reflect the quality of the tour, the professionalism of our crew, or the experience we strive to provide every day. As for the puffins, our tours operate within the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, home to approximately 500,000 Atlantic Puffins and 2.5 million seabirds overall. Viewing the colony by boat is actually the only way to experience this incredible wildlife spectacle due to its protection status. While modern phone cameras can capture some great memories, guests hoping for close-up wildlife photography often find that a camera with a zoom lens helps capture the kinds of images seen in professional wildlife photos. We appreciate your comments and are glad you enjoyed seeing the puffins. While we wish the whales had made an appearance for you, their absence is one of the realities of experiencing wildlife in its natural environment. Thank you for joining us, and we wish you safe travels. Claire

Stephen_S, Jun 2026
Would recommend. Dress warm. Staff responsive and fun. Follow instructions from booking. Saw whales, puffins and common murres.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Hi Stephen! Thank you for the recommendation! I love that your review includes one of the most important pieces of Newfoundland boating advice: dress warm! 😄 The North Atlantic likes to keep us on our toes, even in the summer, and we always warn people that it is colder out on the water. I'm so glad you enjoyed your time with our crew and were able to see whales, puffins, and Common Murres all on the same trip. The Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is an amazingly rich ecosystem, we are so lucky to have it right in our backyard! Thanks for joining us, and we hope to see you aboard again someday. Until next time, Claire

Enjoyable morning

Wayne_G, Jun 2026
We saw a lot of whales while out in our tour. Enjoyed our time with the crew. The song by one of the crew was lovely and unexpected

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Thank you for the lovely review of your morning, Wayne! We're thrilled to hear the whales were putting on a show during your tour. Seeing multiple whales out on the water is always exciting, and we're glad you were able to enjoy those encounters alongside our crew. We're especially happy to hear you enjoyed the music. The songs are one of those little touches that often catch guests by surprise and help make the experience uniquely Newfoundland. We'll be sure to pass along your kind words. Thanks for joining us, and we hope to welcome you aboard again for another memorable day on the water! Until next time, Claire

Good experience

Cuy, Jun 2026
Too many people on peak times. Cannot see the whale properly. But if you got a better view then you got it. For iceberg it was great as the boat was turned both sides so all can have a change to enjoy and take photo with the iceberg.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Hi there Cuy, Thank you for joining us and for taking the time to share your feedback. I'm so glad to hear you experienced so many highlights during your tour, including our helpful and friendly crew, the incredible seabird activity within one of the largest puffin colonies in the world, and the unique timing of your visit with an iceberg in the harbour! On top of that, it’s wonderful you were fortunate enough to enjoy a bonus sighting of a whale as well... something quite special, particularly early in the season when whale encounters are not to be regularly expected. I am happy to hear you particularly enjoyed the iceberg viewing experience. Icebergs are a little easier to work with than whales, as they tend to stay in one place! Our captain always turns the vessel so guests on both sides have an opportunity to enjoy the views and take photos. Whales can be a bit more challenging, as wildlife sightings are unpredictable and often only visible for brief moments before they dive. Whenever whales are present, our crew continually reminds guests to stay where they are so the captain can safely reposition the vessel, giving everyone the best possible opportunity to see them. Passengers are also informed that our crew members also move throughout all areas of the boat to help guests find a spot at the rail and make sure everyone has a chance to enjoy the sighting. Thank you again for joining us. We're happy you were able to experience millions of seabirds including puffins, an incredible iceberg and an early season whale on your tour! We hope to welcome you back aboard in the future. Please feel free to check our availability through our website, if a trip with a smaller crew is more up your alley we generally find that trips earlier in the morning or later in the evening may not be as busy. However, Newfoundland is an absolutely incredible place and a trip with Gatherall's is considered a "must do" for many travellers... who can blame them for also wanting to join a tour and create such special wildlife memories with us. Safe travels, Claire

Excellent experience....

Excellent experience. Staff was fabulous. Very friendly and knowledgeable. We saw lots of birds and humpback whales.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Hi Agnes Thank you for the wonderful review! I am so thrilled to hear you had such an excellent experience with our fabulous staff. They really love what they do and love getting to share their local knowledge with our guests. It's wonderful that you were able to see so many seabirds along with humpback whales! There's nothing quite like seeing Newfoundland's wildlife up close on the water. Thank you for joining us, and we hope to welcome you aboard again for another adventure! Safe travels, Claire Thank you for your recommendation, and we hope to welcome you both aboard again someday!
