Itinerary

Meet your knowledgeable local guide at the Riva, Split's main promenade along the coastline, to start this atmospheric and delicious 2-hour tour of Split's Old Town. Head to the UNESCO World Heritage-site Diocletian's Palace, once home to the eccentric Roman emperor. Fans of the hit HBO show Game of Thrones might recognize some of the sites within the grounds of the fourth-century palace.

Stroll some of the palace grounds, which today have become part of the fabric of the city. Starting in the seventh century, the crumbling palace became home to shops and merchants and so on. Today, it is home to boutiques, restaurants and cafes.

Continue on ot Peskarija, the local fish market that sells daily local freshly caught seafood just off the coast of Split. Absorb the atmosphere of the market as local fishmongers yell out the day's catch for shoppers.

If all this gawking has worked up an appetite, next you'll be treated to a traditional Dalmatian snack. The menu might change depending on what is in season but expect local specialities such as prosciutto, known as pršut here, as well as, sheep's milk cheese, octopus salad, anchovies and olives. And don't forget about the locally made wines, which are delicious. During the meal, listen to your guide regale you with stories about Split's history.

Once you're finished with the meal, the head back to the Riva. Ask your guide for recommendations for further exploring or sit down at a cafe for a coffee or a something sweet.

A very pleasant experience.

RUBEN_P, Jul 2018
I visited Croatia with my wife last week and one of our stops was in Split. We decided to take a tour of old town and this tour was a pleasant experience. Our tour lady was very informative about the Diocletian Palace and its history. At the same time, I believe she went the extra mile explaining us about the best choices for food and places to visit. I recommend this tour to anybody who goes to Split with the intention of learning about the history of the Diocletian period, the palace and the city of Split.

Great overview

A great overview of the city. Must go back to each historical site on your own to see details with the knowledge covered by the tour.

We were lucky ducks as we were the only two on this tour with the very knowledgeable, informative and most helpful and friendly guide, Linda. Split just came alive to us as she described its history and as we meandered around the old town. Finally we had a local snack of cheese, prosciutto etc with a glass of excellent local wine. I would have to say, this was one of the best walking tours we have done and there have been many over the years. Thank you so much Linda - we'll be back!

Our tour with Maja was brilliant - we were lucky enough to have her all to ourselves which was great. We learned a lot about the history of Split and Diocletians palace - all followed by tasty snack and drink at local restaurant. Would highly recommend this tour.

This was an Urban Adventures tour, which we've always found to be excellent and in this case it did not disappoint. Our guide VJ was great! Full of knowledge and great sense of humour. The lunch/snack is also fantastic! Beautiful octopus salad! Would definitely recommend!

An excellent tour given by a very friendly and knowledgeable tour guide formerly an archaeologist. Included traditional food and wine/beer in a small out of the way restaurant which we enjoyed so much that we revisited towards the end of our holiday.

There was no one better to lead this tour than our guide Maya, who was a former archeologist! The meal at the end was also fabulous and the tour is the perfect amount of time.

Fantastic! Well worth doing a tour of the Palace to understand it more and get a feel for the city. Our guide Maya was great, friendly and very knowledgeable. She gave us lots of information. The traditional snack is a nice way to finish the tour but not necessary if you have limited time. I highly recommend this tour.

I highly recommend this 3-hour tour. Maya has a wealth of information and the 'snack' at the end of the tour is a large plate full of so many Dalmatian specialties -- it was enough for our dinner! We toured around Diocletian's palace and decided to pay the extra bit to see the basement structure of the palace. We were fortunate enough to be the only 2 people who signed up for the tour, so we got a private one! My only suggestion would be for Maya to focus on a few key pieces of information because it was a lot to take in all at once over the course of 3 hours. But all in all it was great!

Excellent tour particularly with our guide who was an archaeologist and actually did excavation on the site. As a travel writer, I have written an indepth article on the tour. If Viator is interested in purchasing, it, get in touch with me.

Excellent, excellent, excellent...

kelvin.chak, Jul 2015
Excellent, excellent, excellent! wholly due to our excellent guide, Maja Bilic. She is an archaeologist by profession and actually worked on the uncovering/restoration of the actual sites we visited! Maja provided vivid context to everything we saw and touched, bringing ancient artifacts to life with her professional explanations. It helps tremendously that her knowledge of history is impeccable, and could correlate the Diocleatian period with the overall history of Europe. Highly recommended!! Maja really transported us back 2000 years during the tour!

Maja was a great tour guide---fluent in English, very informative, and patient with our questions. She is also very knowledgeable of the areas of Spilt where Game of Thrones scenes were filmed. Our tour started at 3 p.m. and the traditional lunch did not happen until around 4:30 but it was still very good. We went to Maslina and had the octopus salad and homemade bread.

If you love history you will love this tour! Mya our guide has a wealth of knowledge about the Diocletian's Palace and Split itself. We roamed around the palace and old town taking in the amazing history and soaking up the atmosphere. This was all topped off with lunch at a local cafe, The Olive, where we enjoyed some traditional food and a glass of wine. A great afternoon had by all!
