What To Expect
The Dakota Discovery Museum in Mitchell is open weekdays from 9am to 6pm and Saturdays 10am to 4pm. From October to April, the museum closes an hour early on weekdays at 5pm. Make sure to double check with the museum about its hours before planning your visit.
The museum is located at 1300 McGovern Avenue in Mitchell on the Dakota Wesleyan campus. When you arrive, you have all day to explore the galleries and village at your own pace. Check in at the desk in the main building, and then start at the main building or outside in the museum’s historical village.
In the main building, there are four art galleries and a historical gallery. In the historical gallery, learn about the Fur Trade and Dakota Territory, plus the historical railroading, farming, and ranching of the area. The art galleries have works of art created by Middle Border Region artists, such as Harvey Dunn and Oscar Howe.
When you journey outside, catch a glimpse of a 110-year-old prairie church and a 1-room schoolhouse that opened in 1885. Other structures in the village include a railroad depot and the home of Louis and Mary Beckwith. Before you leave for the day, don’t forget to drop by the gift shop, and pick up souvenirs to remind you of your time at the Dakota Discovery Museum (own expense).
