Great experience from descendants of great Kings of Cambodia

Sheiryl_V, Nov 2023
Great experience from descendants of great Kings of Cambodia I went on a mini Asia Tour for my birthday. Siem Reap Cambodia is one of my destination. Mr. Sopheap Tann and our driver Pan both of Angkor Buddy Tour picked me up in my hotel in Siem Reap Cambodia before the agreed time. I booked for a group tour but it turns out that i was alone for the whole day Angkor Wat tour while the other guests went with the Sunrise Tour. It turned out to be a private tour. That fact alone tells much about how committed Angkor Buddy Tour at giving the best customer experience. They did not cancel the tour even if i am alone. Other establishment like our infamous airlines in the Philippines would have cancelled it considering that only one customer arrived. So we went on our journey of the great Cambodian past around 9th century to the 18th century which was ruled by great Kings of the Khmer Empire like King Jayavarman. We started our journey with the tour of the grand Angkor Wat, a UNESCO heritage known as the biggest Buddhist or Hindu temple of the world. Our tour guide explained about how the warring Hindu Gods resolved their conflicts, which is the basis of the Hindu beliefs today. Through the history of the Hindu gods you will understand why almost all of the temples have Hindu mystical animals like the Naga, which is a water snake and the lions and all the carvings in all the temples we visited. The Angkor Wat is amazing, beautiful and serene. The Cambodian government ensured that the surròunding lands will not be taken over by greedy and unthoughtful businessmen and natives. People are prohibited from building their homes and businesses near the temple grounds except for a few small businesses. The carvings in Angkor Wat is all about the Hindu gods. Then we went to the Angkor Thom which used to be the old city of the Khmer empire. 😊😊 Bayon temple is inside the Angkor Thom city. Again you will see the moat and the Hindu Gods and Evil holding on the Naga, a mystical snake which helps create the holy water the gives everlasting life. Anyway, Bayon temple has towers with four heads of the gods representing 4 virtues. It is one of the temples built by the King Jayavarman VII known as the tolerance king of Cambodia. According to our guide, he is the only King of Cambodia who not only thinks about himself but most especially the people. He was the only King who built 100 hospitals in Cambodia, a temple dedicated to his mother now known as the Ta Phrom temple and a temple dedicated to his father known as the Preah Khan temple. The carvings in Bayon temple tells not only of the Kings life but also of the daily lives of the ordinary Cambodian people. There you will see that they too have wrestling, cock fighting, boar fighting, wars, fishing, selling fish etc. So see, those games starts as early as the 11th century. Then we went to the Ta Phrom temple which is a temple dedicated to the mother of King Jayavarman. It is where one can see nature taking over man made structures. This has become famous because of Angelina Jolie of Tomb raider. It is the place where the movie the Tomb raider is shot. One tree is now called the Angelina Jolie tree. 😊😉 And of course i have my pictures taken there. You may ask why i titled my journey in Siem Reap as Great experience from descendants of great kings. Well it is because my tour guide Sopheap Tann is a great tour guide who is knowledgeable of all the history of the temple, the Kings who built it, passionate at maintaining its sanctity and a great photographer and videographer. He took most of my pictures and videos. I notice some tours are guided by foreigners who speaks foreigners language but nothing beats a local tour guide who loves and knows deeply about the history of Cambodia. Mr. Tann is kind and understanding. He answers my most mundane questions. Our driver, Pan is also kind and understanding. They are not like other tour guides who ripped off their customers or those who forced their customers to give a tip unlike in the Philippines. In fact, when i asked them to eat with me during lunch, they respectfully declined maybe thinking that it might become too costly for me. Unlike some tour guides in the Philippines who will not hesitate to eat with their guests.hahaha😆😆😆 And most of all the tour price is very reasonable. It is only US$25 per person with an air conditined van for the whole 8 hours. Imagine!! In the Philippines, especially in Oslob Cebu, Bohol and Palawan, people will charge a tourist for US$10 for one way.😠 Then the hotels in Siem Reap Cambodia is very affordable. My hotel is only P1,500 and it already looked like a 4 star hotel in the Philippines. Then we went to another small temple which is already more than 1000 years old. Anyway, i say they have great Kings because their Kings have foresight. They built great temples from stones which still stands after almost 1000 years. You can really marvel at how great its construction prowess because the roofs of the temple, its walls and floors are made or hard stones without any cement linking it together. You will be amazed at how they formed the dome shaped roof or the triangle shaped roof using hardstone blocks without metals or cement holding it together. Most temples took more than a decade to build which tells you how patient the Kings were. The carvings on the wall tells you how foresighted the Kings were knowing that anything written on paper will somehow rot and perish and that is why they use the stonewalls to tell their victories, defeat, eveyday lives of both royalty and ordinary people. I told our tour guide, Mr. Tann that they were lucky, they have great Kings who wrote their and their people's story on the walls which is the basis of their history. In so doing, the future generations will know of their history. The Filipinos do not have such great leaders. We only know of our history as early as the 1521 when the Spaniards conquered the Phils. Before that, we knew very little. We only knew there were Itas and Malays who lived in the country but nothing has been written or known about them. My journey into the great Khmer empire of Cambodia was an awesome experience. I highly recommend Angkor Buddy Tour and Mr. Tann and our driver Mr. Pan for the Cambodia tour. I will be back definitely with my friends and/ or family and /or clients because i am not done with exploring Cambodia yet.
