Went on a fun and informative tour with Sam. He was very knowledgeable not only about chocolate and how it's made, but a lot of the history of San Miguel and the surrounding areas. You will try not only delicious chocolate in candy form, but also in mole' and ice cream as well. Sam was awesome and very helpful with general knowledge and questions regarding our stay as well.

Informative & entertaining

The walking tour is easy & does not require a lot of walking. There are a lot of seating down breaks during the tour.

Awesome Guide but Average Spots

Rodolfo_H, Mar 2026
Sam, our tour guide, was amazing—very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what he does. However, I think the touring company could do a better job selecting more unique stops. The locations included in the tour felt fairly average, commercialized, and common, and they came across as choices made mainly to fit within a budget.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and for highlighting Sam’s passion and knowledge—he truly loves what he does, and we’re delighted you enjoyed his presentation and storytelling. We’re sorry to hear that the stops didn’t feel as distinctive as you hoped. Our Chocolate and Cobblestones tour is designed to showcase the history and flavors of Mexico's most famous creation; cacao, at carefully chosen venues that highlight the character of San Miguel de Allende, but we understand that some guests are looking for something more unique. If you’d like to explore a different side of the city, our Evening Food Tour features more upscale and innovative dining experiences that might be a better fit. We’d love the chance to welcome you back and show you another layer of San Miguel’s culinary scene.

Exceptional guide

A Delicious Experience For Chocolate LOVERS

Maria_S, Oct 2025
It's a great experience. Elisa provided with great information about the origins of chocolate. She has a lot of knowledge, and it was a great experience, we got to know new places. 10 out of 10

Fantastic tour for chocolate lovers

Tina_C, May 2025
Our experience was led by Sam, a former pastry chef and obvious chocolate lover. We learned about the history of chocolate, and in particular, why Mexican chocolate is so darn good. We visited several local establishments which highlighted chocolate in its various forms. We highly recommend this tour! FYI, Sam made sure to have some gluten free options at our stops so I wouldn’t miss out on the experience at each location.

Amazing experience!

CidFrancis_B, Mar 2025
Great experience! Our tour guide, Sam, was amazing. We tried some very delicious local delicacies and learned their history and the culture. I highly recommend it.

Chocoholics Delight

Sam, our tour guide, was wonderful! He spent time telling us about San Miguel de Allende, past and present. He clearly has knowledge of the area, originating from Minnesota! Of course, the various chocolate tastings were a delight and delicious. We would highly recommend this tour. Thank you Sam!

Sam was outstanding! He’s very informative and also had fun with us. We ended up eating quite a bit of food, so I suggest come hungry!

Absolutely Fantastic!

Dylan_S, Dec 2024
This was a wonderful tour and it was all down to Sam! The chocolate dishes we were introduced to were delicious but what made the tour was Sam's wealth of knowledge about chocolate, pastry, local architecture and history, and so much more. I was excited for this tour when I booked it but it was 100x better than I could've expected with Sam as our tour guide. It's a must do!

A lot of history of México and Cocoa

Naharjis_D, Jul 2024
WOW WOW WOW!!! Excellent experience with Elisa Torres the secrets and information of Cocoa in the Mexican history just marvelous

Lovely tour

Ashwini_R, Jun 2024
Lovely tour with Elisa Torres. She is very knowledgeable and shared a lot of details about chocolate making but also Mexican history. Enjoyed our time with her and learning traditions like making mole.

Food for thought as well as the soul - outstanding.

Mark_R, Mar 2024
Hands down, Sam was one of the premiere highlights of our trip. His knowledge was expansive and deep. Given his culinary background, he was able to contextualize the importance of chocolate both historically and socially - no easy feat! He was extraordinarily personable and unafraid of going down rabbit holes with us (me). I would not hesitate to engage Sam to explore even more of SMA's culinary nooks and crannies. This was time well-spent.

Fun way to explore

Susan_S, Feb 2024
Great history lesson and beautiful cafes to visit that we never would have found. The chocolate was good and Elisa was a great host.

Wonderful tour, highly recommend!

Tasty and fun chocolate experience

Great sampling of different ways chocolates is used: hot chocolate, candy, pain au chocolate, enchiladas con molè. Elissa gave a detailed and fascinating history of chocolate in Mexico. Highly recommended!

Lovely -delicious.

All the lovely chocolate treats and tour guide Elisa was very informative and very personable. Great course in the history of chocolate

Tasty, informative & fun! An unexpected treat.

Learning about San MIguel de Allende

Joan_A, May 2023
I most appreciated Sam's broad knowledge about San Miguel de Allende. Regarding the tastings, we really liked his first choice of the French pastry restaurant. The truffles that we tasted next were less inspiring. It was fun to try the chocolate mole at Bougainvillea and the setting was charming. And, our last stop to try the original xocolatl. It was also in a beautiful setting.

Wonderful and delicious tour!

Kyuhee_L, Mar 2023
It was such a wonderful little tour with variety of locally sourced chocolate items. Our guide Sam was full of knowledge about the town, the history, culinary culture, and of course, chocolate! We learned so much about everything from him. The items we ate were perfect as well, you start with Pain au chocolat, and 3 truffles, chicken enchilada with Mole sauce, agua y chocolate, and some ice cream! It was a great course of lovely treats. It was my first time doing a tour around food, and this tour convinced me that I will do this in every city I visit. The "walking" part is very light, so anyone with any condition can enjoy. Highly highly recommend it!

Vail was a wonderful tour guide and knows a great deal about the history of San Miguel. And the chocolate wasn't bad either!

Fun and informative

Karl K, Jan 2020
This guided tour exceeded my expectations. Our tour guide was a retired American pastry chef, which I think made the tour even more informative. We learned about the history of chocolate, as well as some history of San Miguel de Allende. The samples were varied and overwhelmingly interesting and very good! This tour is worth the price!
