Coffee plantation was good. Poas was clouded in.

Laura_E, Jun 2026
It was a good half day activity to get out of the city. The coffee plantation was interesting. We learned something’s about coffee and coffee in Costa Rica. Poas volcano is hit or miss. Our day was a miss. Clouds covered the volcano the whole time. We got to walk a bit, so that was good. I don’t think Viator does a good job of letting you know what to bring. It was cool and rainy at the volcano. I was prepared, but others were not.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're delighted to hear you enjoyed visiting the coffee plantation and learning more about Costa Rica's rich coffee culture. We're sorry that the weather didn't cooperate during your visit to Poás Volcano. Unfortunately, visibility at the crater depends entirely on natural conditions, and while we always hope for clear skies, the clouds can sometimes obscure the view. We also appreciate your comments regarding the information about what to bring. We understand how important it is for guests to be prepared, especially since weather conditions at the volcano can be much cooler and rainier than in San José. We will review our pre-tour information and continue working with our booking partners to ensure travelers receive clearer recommendations about appropriate clothing and rain gear. Thank you again for your valuable feedback. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Costa Rica for another adventure under clearer skies!

Responsible tour company

MingHok_T, Mar 2026
Responsive tour company, would notify and confirm time of pick-up the day before (which I appreciate as some companies here don’t seem to do that). The guide was trying his best to tell us everything about Costa Rica. The experience was good too - not too rush but sufficient time. Except it really depends on the weather to see the volcano which nobody had control over.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you very much for your feedback! We’re glad you appreciated the pick-up confirmation and our communication. It’s great to hear you enjoyed the experience and that the guide shared information about Costa Rica along the way. As you mentioned, volcano views depend on the weather, but we always hope for those clear moments. We truly appreciate you traveling with us!

Good tour, horrible traffic ruined the experience

Daphne_T, Mar 2026
The tour itself is fine. The coffee tour and breakfast were good. My main issue was with the transportation. The pickup was very late (~20 minutes after the scheduled pick up time) and I thought they had forgotten to pick me up or just straight up canceled the tour. When the shuttle was returning to San José to drop us off, there was insane traffic, as it took us almost 3 hours to get back into the city center. By the time we arrived at the drop off point, it was almost 5pm, and I had missed my other tour I had booked that started at 4:30pm, which was nonrefundable. I know the traffic is not their fault, but please keep in mind that while this is advertised as a half day tour, it will most likely turn into a full day tour with the traffic.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the tour itself, especially the coffee experience and breakfast. At the same time, we sincerely apologize for the late pickup and for the uncertainty this caused at the start of your day. We understand how concerning that can be, but out records mention we where late a couple of minutes. Regarding the return, San José traffic can unfortunately be unpredictable, and while it is beyond our direct control, we truly regret that the extended travel time caused you to miss your subsequent, non-refundable tour. We double check our records and confirm the passanger was drop of at 2 pm or so. We appreciate your understanding in acknowledging the traffic situation, and we also value your comment about expectations. Your feedback is very important to us. Thank you again for sharing your experience, and we hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a smoother experience in the future.

Nice tour

Doug, Aug 2025
The half day tour was actually 8 hours start to finish but we had a good time. The guide was very informative.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Thank you for your feedback! We’re happy to hear you had a great time and enjoyed the guide’s knowledge. We truly appreciate your note about the tour length—sometimes with travel times and activities it can run longer than expected, and we’ll keep working to make schedules as clear as possible. We’re glad it was still a memorable experience!

Volcano view rained out but nice day

Felicia_M, Jul 2024
This was a nice way to learn about coffee and its production in a more traditional fashion. The breakfast was nice but the coffee was excellent! Unfortunately, we had no view of the volcano, but that is just how nature goes sometimes.

Response from Host, Jul 2024

Dear Felicia, thanks a lot for your comments about the experience in one of our one day tours from San Jose. Hope to visit us again and recommend your friends to come to Costa Rica! Regards,

Exceptional Guide and Fun Tour!

Kayla_K, Mar 2024
My husband and I did the half day tour visiting the Doka coffee plantation and the Poaz Volcano. It was such a wonderful experience! We were lucky and had a super clear viewing of the crater. The breakfast was delicious, the coffee tour was so fun to learn about, the volcano experience was superb and the guide (Adrienne?) was exceptional! Highly recommend!

Response from Host, Mar 2024

Dear Kayla, thank you so much for sharing your experience in one of our tours from San Jose. Hope you visit us again,

Coffee and Nature experience!

Anali_S, Jan 2024
Great experience! The only thing I would improve/change is to allow a bit more time for breakfast. In our case it felt really rushed, and we were looking forward to having a nice breakfast with the opportunity of tasting the different coffee types calmly. ~25 min (maybe even a little less) for ordering food eating it and trying different coffee, was not the relaxing morning start we were looking for. The food quality and taste (traditional costa rican cuisine) was enjoyable! Max was a great tour guide with plenty of experience and knowledge! He was very thorough when explaining the different stages of coffee processing and types. We really enjoyed the tour. After the coffee experience we headed to Poas, and we were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day to enjoy the walk towards the crater. We even had time to walk to the lagoon and do some souvenir shopping! Overall a very pleasant experience and a good way to get to know more about the coffee industry in Costa Rica, plus enjoy some of its natural wonders!

Response from Host, Jan 2024

Dear Anali: It is always nice to read a detailed comments about our tours, as they improve the perception to a future travellers to come to Costa Rica to enjoy our nature and cultural activities. Regards,

Well, the pick-up-situation ..

Julian_K, Dec 2023
Not really recommendable to book a tour from San José with personal pick-up. Although it might be comfortable for you, it is quite exhausting, when you have to wait that several other participants are picked-up. Coffee tour and volcano were quite nice tho.

Response from Host, Dec 2023

Dear Julian, thanks for your comment about the pick up route when you have booked a regular tour. We suggest future travelers to ask for our one day private tours departing from SanJose which allows to avoid this situation. Hope your comments help other travelers to travel with Expediciones Tropicales Day Tours.

Three Cheers for Martin!

Catherine_S, Nov 2023
Martin was the best tour guide I had in a week of tours in Costa Rica. I learned a ton and was lucky to be one of the 30% of people that actually sees the crater (be warned, there's often clouds). I'm not a coffee fan, but the experience was great and I learned a lot (it's not a coffee tasting experience, though you do get coffee, this is more of a planation educational tour)

Response from Host, Nov 2023

Dear Cathrine: Certainly this is more a educational - cultural & naturalist tour than a tasting coffee experience, as you mentioned. Thank you so much for sharing your appreciation,

Great Tour

Jacquelne_E, Oct 2023
The tour guide was excellent and so knowledgeable. This was a great tour of you love coffee and want to see an active volcano.

Response from Host, Oct 2023

Dear Jacqueline: This is always satisfactory for our people at Expediciones Tropicales Day Tours, to listen our travelers when we fullfilled their expectations. We hope your recommendation as well with your friends,

Long and expensive

Doug_D, Mar 2023
Pickup at 5:45am even though I booked for 7:30. Total of 9 hours not 6 as advertised due to all the driving round, pickups, drop offs. Breakfast was minimal but edible. Coffee tour wasn’t great. Volcano was amazing but we had less than an hour there. Would not recommend for the price.

Response from Host, Mar 2023

Dear Doug: Expediciones Tropicales Day Tours as an experienced tour operator, we do appreciate your comments, we believe in excellence, that's why we are constantly improving our customer service according to our clients' suggestions. Regards,

A glimpse at the Poas crater in between 2 clouds, excellent information provided by the guide. Great group to be with!

Fantastic views and great coffee

Sangeetha_A, Jan 2023
Well planned trip to view one of the largest Calderas and taste some great coffee along the way. The weather favored us and we got some fantastic views. Our guide Pedro was very enthusiastic and kept us informed about the sights along the way. His sense of humor made the trip more memorable.

Great tour!

Ksenia_S, Jan 2023
Donald was very knowledgeable; he walked us through Doka coffee plantation after we had a traditional Costa Rican breakfast and tried locally produced coffee. We learnt about the production process and peaberry coffee. Then we went to Poas and enjoyed an easy and pleasant hike to see the crator and the lagoon while learning about the plants that grow at the foot of the volcano. We got lucky and the crator wasn't covered by clouds. After the tour was over, we made a stop at a local shop where we were offered to try cheese and wine. Totally worth getting up at 5 am for!

Exciting and relaxing, we were able to see the crater and the lagoon.

Betty_V, May 2026
Exciting, good guide, everything very organized, you must walk, but the view at the end is totally worth it.

Tolle Orte, mangelhafte Tour

Laurin_E, Sep 2023

Response from Host, Oct 2023
