It was a long ride to get there, but absolutely worth it. The cruise on Doubtful Sound was 3hr, and the rest of the time was getting there and back. We learned a lot on the way, and I'd definitely do it again. Doubtful is more peaceful and wild than Milford, and we were able to have a few minutes of absolute silence. Magical.

The most amazing trip!! Doubtful Sound is spectacular. Well worth the bus/boat/bus ride to get to the cruise. Real NZ operators were friendly and knowledgeable and the setting could not have been more beautiful. Highly recommend!!

Itinerary

Start your adventure to Doubtful Sound with a road journey from Queenstown to Lake Manapouri, situated in the UNESCO–listed Fiordland National Park, and ride a ferry across its tranquil waters. Then ascend Wilmot Pass, stopping en route for a photo op of Doubtful Sound, a ribbon of blue meandering between the Fiordland's alpine moss gardens and steep rainforest-laden walls.

Board a spacious catamaran at Deep Cove for your cruise of Doubtful Sound. Ten times larger than Milford Sound, the pristine fjord boasts sun-drenched or mist-shrouded peaks where waterfalls cascade into the deep blue water below.

Keep an eye out for basking New Zealand fur seals, rare Fiordland crested penguins, and bottlenose dolphins that often swim alongside the vessel as your skipper explains the natural features of this extraordinary landscape.

End with the return trip to Manapouri, where you’re transferred back to Queenstown.

This is a long day. Twelve hours from leaving Queenstown to arriving back. However this was worth every minute of the long journey to get there. Our driver/tour leader was Chao and he was professional, very informative, a great driver and also very funny! The 2 hours on the bus to Lake Manapouri was filled with lots of information about the area we drove through. The boat trip across the lake was smooth and the crew were cheerful and chatty. We had ordered the picnic lunch as part of our package and we picked this up before boarding at Manapouri. I would recommend this option. Then back onto a bus with Chao to cross through the forest to Doubtful Sound where we saw waterfalls and our first glimpse of Doubtful Sound from high above. We then boarded the second boat for the three hour trip through the Sound and into the Tasman Sea. The scenery is awe inspiring and the quietness adds to the remote experience. We saw seals basking on rocks at the mouth of the Tasman Sea and an Albatross circling past the boat. It’s hard to describe the vastness and seclusion of the Sound but it is beautiful. On the journey back everyone was excited by what they had experienced but also tired from the long day. I am so glad we chose this particular trip and grateful we had the chance to see this amazing hidden place.

Worth the trip!

Harden_C, Apr 2026
The Doubtful Sound cruise is worth the long journey from Queenstown and the whole trip was a well oiled machine from start to finish (plenty of chances to purchase food and drinks as well as clean bathrooms on the boats). Our experience started with a ~2.5 hour bus ride from Queenstown to Manapouri which was both scenic and educational (our bus driver Andrea was great!). The bus ride was followed by a 45 minute boat ride where you were able to enjoy more amazing scenery as well as purchase food and drinks. After the first boat ride was a 50 minute long bus ride to the start of Doubtful Sound cruise. The main event of the Doubtful Sound cruise was a once in a lifetime experience. There was ample time and space to both take in the surroundings and to take all the pictures and videos you want. We only saw a couple of other boats during the cruise, but most of the time the cruise is the only boat in Doubtful Sound. After the cruise, the return trip is the reverse of the journey there, with a long bus ride to Queenstown giving you a chance to take a nap. Overall, the day took 12 hours and was a day we’ll never forget!

Beyond a doubt, Doubtful Sound is the one to see

Louise_C, Mar 2026
If you are visiting the sounds of southern New Zealand, Doubtful Sound is the one to see. We were the only tour on the water. No helicopters or planes flying over, just peace and the beauty of creation. RealNZ are absolute professionals, providing the touring experience we are all looking for. Thanks Dan for a wonderful day.

The day to get to Doubtful sound was long but worth the drive. Lucky the weather was good but would of been better with rain to see more water falls

Incredible scenery!

Dawn_N, Feb 2026
Stunning scenery and a great bus driver/tour guide (shout out to Ula!). It’s a long day but full of beauty!!

Crowded boats

Jacqueline_R, Feb 2026
Incredible scenery! Lovely staff, boat and bus. However it was too crowded. There was too many people for the size if the boat. It was difficult to see at times because of the crowd.

Very good

Beautiful Tour. I liked especially 5 minutes of silence in the rain. Ula was my driver. She was professional and polite. Rainforest looks enchanting!

A wonderful unique day. Don’t forget the bug spray although we were saved by other lovely people on the trip. You can get food on the boat which we were told you could not. Some people pre ordered lunch but I’m not sure how they did this.

This is a long day from Queenstown but absolutely worth it for the scenery and commentary on route and for the stunning tour of Doubtful Sounds.

Unforgettable experience

It show a lot of new zealand true nature And well organized people who did a good job very friendly With a good service we thank them

Beautiful Doubtful Sound

Sharon_C, Jan 2026
Doubtful Sound is wonderful. We enjoyed it equally with our visit to Milford Sound a few years ago. Highly recommend visiting both. Milford Sound is accessible by car and Doubtful Sound is only accessible by bus and a lake boat. The transit is worth the extra transit time, for its sheer beauty and remote location. A favorite experience is the pause of silence near the end is the excursion We highly recommend both Milford and Doubtful Sound

Doubtful Sound a fun day.

Susan_M, Jan 2026
Very well organized. NZ is a top quality operator. I think I like Milford Sound better but this was a fun experience.

Long day, but it's worth...

Michael_M, Jan 2026
Long day, but it's worth doing! Just give yourself time before/after because you'll be taking a 2 hour bus to a 1 hour ferry to another 1 hour bus to a roughly 2.5 hour cruise, then coming back the same way you came. It's a long day! But the cruise is done so well that it's worth the effort. Great logistics getting you from point to point. It's a little rough on the 2nd bus because it's a convergence of multiple groups all going to the same place so it's a bit hectic. But once you're on the boat for the cruise, you'll get to relax and enjoy. Get a bit of food and drink, then start seeing some great sights on the cruise. Beware though - bring sunscreen and insect repellent (if you didn't know of sand flies, you will after this trip) so you can protect yourself. Consider ordering lunch ahead for more premium choices, but the ferries have decent food you can buy once there.

Sound of Silence

nem876, Jan 2026
An unforgettable, immersive experience with RealNZ – Doubtful Sound is extraordinary We chose Doubtful Sound over Milford Sound. I can’t compare the two, but I can say without hesitation that we absolutely loved Doubtful Sound. From start to finish, the entire journey felt deeply immersive. Doubtful Sound is unlike any place we’ve ever seen—magnificent, mysterious, and profoundly quiet. It feels remote and untouched in a way that’s increasingly rare. Importantly, getting there is a big part of the experience itself. The layered journey by boat and bus builds anticipation and makes the arrival feel earned, not rushed. The guides were outstanding—extremely knowledgeable, genuinely enthusiastic, and clearly passionate about the place. Every member of the team was polished, professional, and warm without being scripted. The boats and facilities were clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed, with plenty of spots to take in the views from different angles. Food, coffee, and wine on both boats were surprisingly good and added to the overall comfort of the day. Yes, you are technically traveling with a full bus of people—but somehow the experience still felt peaceful, calm, and intimate as we absorbed the surroundings. The highlight for me was the five minutes of total silence in one arm of the sound—the “Sound of Silence.” Standing there in complete stillness, surrounded by nature, was genuinely moving and something I’ll remember for a long time. Highly recommended. Doubtful Sound delivers something rare: beauty, depth, and quiet all at once.

Just as advertised,,,a very full day that was well managed and kept on schedule with so many changes in transportation. I might emphasize there won't be any stops in the first two hours and the food options quite limited. It's mentioned but bringing a sandwich and snacks would be your best bet. Not anyone fault but just such a long day, lots of prep helps. It was a great experience!

A Day Out at Doubtful Sound

Cristina_Y, Dec 2025
This is a very long but very well organised day; kicked off at 7.30am with one of two bus rides and two boat trips and we landed back at base at 8pm. However (and despite the rain in the sound) the waterfalls were amazing and all the commentary very informative. Throughout the day there are drinks and sandwiches/snacks available. All of the RealNZ staff were helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating- could not recommend this company enough.

Amazing Experience

jadegreenleaf, Nov 2025
Pickup from Queenstown by bus, then ferry across Lake Manapouri then bus again for ferry in Doubtful Sound (about 2h-ish). The beauty of Doubtful Sound is incredible. Ferry was very comfortable. The entire day was long but the drivers/guides were great and knowledgeable and the crew on the cruise also did a great job. The only issue is that, the itinerary that's listed on Viator is a little confusing. This is a day trip, with pickup and dropoff from/at Queenstown.

An incredible experience!

Peggy_K, Nov 2025
This experience is incredibly special because it is so remote and beautiful. Taking the boat down the river before taking a bus through the mountains was icing on the cake for the Sound cruise. We had gorgeous weather and saw penguins and seals, as well as numerous waterfalls. The most special experience was when they turned off the engines and we enjoyed the nature around us in silence.

The highlight of our three week trip to NZ

Lindsey_G, Nov 2025
Wow! What an experience. It certainly is a journey to get there but man, it’s so worth it. Both breathtaking and jaw dropping. Perfect silence in possibly the most beautiful place on earth. Coach driver Craig kept us enthralled with fascinating stories of NZ’s history. Loved every minute of this fabulous tour. All the stars!!

A mystical tour

Antoinette_D, Oct 2025
Our driver/guide Blake was very knowlegeable about the history of the sheep and deer farms. The stories about trying to catch the deer to lure them into farms were very entertaining. I’d call those men who hunted or tried various daring ways to help reduce the overwhelming number of deer, deer boys. In spite of the wind, clouds and rain, the spectacular boat trip through the fiord and the Doubtful Sound with the roaring sound of the magnificent waterfalls, had a mystic vibe.

Lovely but a bit overhyped

Joseph_B, Oct 2025
We had quite the day! First of all the weather the day we were scheduled was bad and it was rescheduled to the following day. They informed us that since our tour was rescheduled we would need to rent a car and drive to Lake Manapouri ourselves as they had no room on a bus for us. We had to basically beg for money off the excursion since we had to hire a car for $250 for the day. We finally received $132 off 4 days after the fact with multiple phone calls and emails. So once we arrived it was lovely and a very long day. It rained nonstop so with that and some fog it wasn’t as pretty as it could be. Don’t get me wrong, it was lovely but the four of us traveling together all felt it wasn’t worth the cost, effort and time and was underwhelming. It didn’t help that all towns around the sound including Ta Anau had no power. Which meant no gas or ability to get food for the trip.

Doubtful Sound day trip from Queenstown

Kenton_J, Sep 2025
Doubtful Sound really is a must see when in this part of New Zealand. Most people tend to go to Milford Sound, which is also spectacular, but Doubtful Sound is equally spectacular and different than Milford Sound. Had a great time and was a lot to take in even though it was a rainy day. Well worth the experience regardless of weather.

Marvellous Doubtful Day!

MRSSLNEWBROOK_N, Sep 2025
Wonderful day. Fantastic scenery, informative guides, comfortable safe transportation. Plenty of opportunities to get a drink/snack during the trip. Would go again, no question.

A great day.

The timetable worked perfectly. All transfers went very smoothly. I had requested a forward seat, because I suffer travel sickness and I was able to sit up front which was wonderful.

Maria_V, Aug 2025
Super wonderful experience and once in a lifetime unforeseen adventure and surroundings. Highly recommend. Thanks

Absolutely Amazing!

Kim_N, Aug 2025
Wow! The staff was extremely accommodating throughout the day, regardless of the light rain we experienced. From the drivers of the buses, to the captains and their staffs working the boats everyone was fantastic & the day went quickly and was well organized. The buses and boats were clean and well kept. Having experienced both Doubtful and Milford this week, this tour was relaxing and informative and didn’t seem as long as I imagined. I loved the fact that everyone involved stressed the importance of preservation, and great to hear profits from this tour are donated to preserving this incredible place. Great team effort!

Great people, great scenery

Doremy_T, Jul 2025
On the long bus ride from Queenstown, Pete kept us occupied with a lot of interesting and humorous commentary. There was good food and great hospitality on both boat rides. We enjoyed the fiord, the mountains, ocean, seals, clouds, rainbows, and the mighty peacefulness.
