Robert did a great job of explaining the history of the urban slaves. We learned a lot from him. The house is also stunning.

      Not what was expected

      Jason_M, Dec 2025
I felt the tour was a little more focused on the "masters" of the house than expected. I learned about the house's builder, his financial issues, his wife's wealth, his daughter and her husband, the family that purchased the house and so forth, but not much about the enslaved people other than their economic value. I'd love to have learned more about their humanity and lives and remove focus from the slave owners.

      Very historical and educational experience

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. This was a very educational experience. I wish we could have eaten the food prepared

The tour Guide is wonderful she was very open to questions and very well documented. Kelsy with her narrative allow us to live in the past and to see the hard life of people slaved and in the contrast the opulent life of the owner of the house… sadness and history. Wonderful experience

      Urban Enslavement

      Lynell_A, Jun 2025
No matter what is believed Urban enslavement was just as brutal. The ironing and resewing of sleeves. The cooking 12-16 hours a day. The caring for the children, all children to about the age of five with you own child that could be sold by age 10 years old. Horrible. Sad. But the interesting revelation is that some.had been granted freedom and being enslaved for over 40 years and being sold to pay off debts and being bought back. I cannot ever imagine. It was a good historical tour. Loved the recipes.

      Educational

It was very interesting to learn about the previous owners of this home, about urban enslavement, and the connection of previous family member’s ties to the Whitney Plantation. Very educational and would highly recommend.

      Informative Tour!

The tour is a must for anyone wanting to experience historical New Orleans. The tour was only an hour and filled with information. We loved learning about the history of the home and the two families that occupied the home. Learning about enslaved workers in an urban area was great after we learned about life on the Whitney Plantation.

I love history so while in the city, our family stepped back in time almost 200 years. Our guide was very knowledgeable and offered new insights into urban slavery. It was a packed hour and I’d highly recommend going.

Phenomenal tour. Really centered the slave experience and not the slaveholders. There are not enough tours like this. I learned so much. It was about an hour long.

      A Moving Must-Do

      David_Y, Jul 2024
Robert's closing statements about his own family's close generational experience was a moving, humanizing, and very personal connection that made the rest of the tour make amazing sense.

Great educational tour, so glad we found it.

      Mary_I, Jun 2024
We had an amazing docent who was an advocate of not only the museum but the women’s art in the carriage house. We also met one of the talented artists and are taking a little piece of New Orleans home with us. It was a truly educational visit we will never forgot and a must see if you are in the area!

      Excellent tour
